Windows 7 norton security install problems

After norton security install on a fine running windows 7 HP laptop, I only get the "internet explorer has stopped working" box.

Did uninstall of norton, no change.     Reinstalled norton, no change, just     " internet explorer has stopped..."

Tried various suggestions for hours, no change.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Hello raptoa. Did you reboot after the install then run live update on Norton?

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Open an elevated command prompt (admin), type in the following - sfc/scannow and press enter. Allow the filechecker to check the OS for file corruption.

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Hi raptora,

May I backtrack a bit and ask if your Norton install was a first time install of Norton and if you had any other Antivirus/Security products installed prior to installing Norton?  If so, then the AV would have to be removed including the use of that products removal tool.

As a test, did you try the install using a different browser?

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Had  "norton 360"  years ago, ultimately uninstalled, under installed firewalls, shows norton 360 and windows OFF, Norton Security ON ...

I only have/had  IE as a browser so no install using different browser.

Windows firewall shows  "settings managed by vender application Norton Security, Public Networks not connected"

Previous restore points all gone...

Thanks

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Hi raptora,

  • Have a peek in Control Panel > Programs and Features and tell us which Norton Installs are listed.
  • Next go to Help (upper right hand corner) on the main dashboard of Norton and select Get Support - let it run and tell us what the result is.
  • It would be useful to temporarily install Chrome or Firefox and see if you can open that browser with Norton installed.

Once we have that info we'll provide additional info in regards to any removal/installation.

We'll be awaiting your response.

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Hi and thank you.

Programs and Features lists     Norton security    &    Norton security scan

Get support results in                "not finding any issues with Norton security"

I don't believe I have an option available to me to install Chrome or Firefox.

Thanks for your efforts .

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

raptora. Change your network setting type to private: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2578723/windows-7-network-connections-are-stuck-in-public-mode

Here is my reasoning

"Windows firewall shows  "settings managed by vender application Norton Security, Public Networks not connected"

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

FWIW, (perhaps just for comparison) this is what I have on my WIN 7 Comcast Norton Security Online installation, with IE working fine:

and when Selecting Advanced Settings from above image:

Please bear in mind I just recently updated to Comcast's free Norton Security Online that's why the Norton Product name differs.

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Hey folks, frustrating...maybe some light... thank you for your time.

Went through Change your network setting, after battle, no change after several attempts as far as I could see, real dinosaur here though. Looking at yank's first image of  Home  Connected, Public Not connected ( where I thought I was yesterday), similar, but where its a red box and a red x shield, my box and shield/check mark are   green ,

and perhaps more interesting,  on second image under Domain Profile, I have a green checked shield in front of Windows Firewall is on,

not a red x shield before Windows Firewall is off...

I'm hoping that's big.

Thanks so much ,

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

raptora Bring up the "run" command box. In it type services.msc and press enter. When your services list populates scroll down to windows firewall. Double click it and where it states status change it to stop. In the startup type change that to manual. Save the settings and reboot your system. Let us know if this change helps with your issue. Below is an example from my windows 10 machines.

No joy on trying stop/manual/reboot  .

Thanks

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Did you click stop, then apply once the service stopped? Then change the startup type to manual?

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Mmmm,   when I review the service list, it shows manual now, the next box shows start up as  manual  now and service status shows  stopped  now  .

"then apply once the service stopped? Then change the startup type to manual?"   Not sure if I got this wording correctly...Sorry

Thank you

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

You have it set correctly. Restart your machine and see if you can get your Norton product installed.

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Away from laptop for a few days. Bumped into a usb drive while looking for a lost check book and used it to get Firefox (as suggested here) from a friend and just got back online this minute...I hope eventually I can get things sorted and retrieve my Favorites from IE and learn what happend...

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Again a little back tracking here. In your OP you say the message you are seeing is "internet explorer has stopped working"

As we cannot see your computer, can you confirm that it is not a message about Windows Explorer stopped? That would lead us in a totally different direction.

And is your Windows 7 updated to SP 1 or later?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Confimed,  message reads ,

"Internet Explorer has stopped working"

"A problem caused the program to stop working..."

It is Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1

Thanks

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems

Hi raptora et all,

I have to start wondering if perhaps it is IE itself that is the cause of the situation.  Perhaps a pursuit of the situation in the following manner may be the answer to IE Stopped working.  Not necessarily the exact following post, but thinking along the lines of that post and others available on Google.

Re: Windows 7 norton security install problems
