Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

I've just changed from norton internet security to Norton Security (NIS was about to run out so bought the new version off Amazon) and after the install Windows 7 is now telling me it's not a genuine version, it is a genuine version and was activated 2 or more years ago and has been used just about every days since with updates installed regularly.

I've tried to roll back to restore point but there isn't any, bit strange as I'm sure I've created restore points after installing windows and at various points since.

Before I go through the microsoft hoop jumping exercise and try to activate by phone is there any other suggestions, this is a work computer and it's quite old so I'm not going to consider repurchasing software that I have already paid full price for from a reputable company, I'd be better putting the money towards a new computer!

Nothing else has changed on the computer, the only thing I've done is install norton Security this morning. during the process the old version was uninstalled and the computer had to be restarted, then the install continued and registered itself with my Norton account, the install is showing properly there.

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

Comments from a peer.

Not seeing others complaining about this.   THERE are reports of a rash of not genuine reports NOT related to Norton Security related to a bad patch KB 3004394.  I've been running Windows 7 x64 and Norton Security without a problem.  Suggest making sure both Windows and Norton have all updates, and then a complete shutdown and reboot.  A fix for the bad patch is suppose to be included in current Windows Updates.

Consider running the SFC cmd .  Possibly SFC /verifyonly  in a command window run as admin.  To allow it to attempt to fix run as SFC /scannow

Possibly some Microsoft function is not able to communicate though the firewall, but not likely.  What happens if you disable the firewall for a test?

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

Hi bowler,

If the KB3004394 has been installed in your computer, this could have caused the issue you are having.
Take a look here where there was a long debate about this update, this might help.

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

I'll check on this but I have it set to only let me know about updates, not download or install them.
It is 64 bit though, as I said it only happened when i installed NS over NIS, my other windows 7 64 bit computer is fine so far.
I've talked to my wife (partner) and she's rather just pay for a new key if it's going to be too much trouble, after all we use it for work and could lose more with it not being productive.

Thanks for the pointers

Hi Steve,

Keep us updated whatever happens. Doubts remain about how NS could have caused this, I had never seen this before.

Thanks,

Before I go through the microsoft hoop jumping exercise and try to activate by phone is there any other suggestions, this

I've had this happen a couple of times in the past and never known what triggered it but I reactivated over the internet by a simple painless procedure. I never had to use the phone but ISTR it was an option when I did as below.

Here's what MS gives as the procedure:

I see messages that Windows might not be genuine. How do I fix this?

If you're seeing notifications that the copy of Windows that is installed on your PC might not be genuine, or that you might be a victim of counterfeit software, it's likely that your copy of Windows was not properly activated or is otherwise not genuine. To fix this, click the notification and follow the steps to either repair Windows or—if you have inadvertently obtained counterfeit software—buy genuine Windows.

I definitely did not have to use this one!

Windows 7 displays "Windows is not Genuine" with an error code of 0x80070005

but I include in case it's relevant.

One thing to bear in mind is that if it's a works computer how was it licenced? If it's under a volume licensing agreement (?) you'd better talk to your IT department?

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

Although Rapid drivers and the Catroot folders could be causes (a few others to)

The main problem with Norton and Windows not staying Genuine or not able to be validated is

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2230957

For whatever reason the "SYSTEM" account lost the "Full Control" or has no Permission setting for the registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root, after that happens Windows can't activate itself or stay activated.

The SYSTEM account needs the control.

The Fixit resets (restores) the Registry key permissions back to what they should be.

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

Thankyou Quads and all that replied, the link with the fixit sorted the problem so I guess it was connected to permissions being changed.

I still think it was Norton that somehow caused or helped cause the problem, it may have just triggered windows to mess something up but it's fixed now. However I know just enough about computers to get myself into trouble ;-)

When I said work computer it's not a corporation, just me and my wife are self employed so basically a personal computer.

anyway a big thankyou as you've saved me a lot of hastle and time.

Not just me then.

As I said it was after installing Norton with me too, I didn't install any updates at the same time and they didn't become active because of a restart BUT it was obviously related to the same problem, glad it helped you too.

Hello

This FixIt tool was created like almost a year before Norton Security came out and even before it was in Beta. I don't think Norton Security was the cause since we didn't see too many users complaining about this. It must be a certain combination of hardware and software maybe together with Norton Security for a few people. There must have been a major problem for Microsoft to come out with a FixIt.

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

Hello

Wow, a few days after floridaliz's post I've had precisely the same issue!

Two desktops, both running Norton Internet Security. Got fed up with the reminders re: imminent subscription expiry so decided to download and install Norton Security, using the code I'd bought from Amazon a few weeks ago.

First PC - with Win 7 Professional 64 Bit - no problems at all.

Second PC - with Win 7 Home 64 bit - installed fine - then after reboot Windows 7 displays "Windows is not Genuine" with an error code of 0x80070005

Used the Microsoft Fixit application mentioned above which put it all right (thanks to whoever found that little gem!) - but isn't very reassuring that something as fundamental as this could break without any obvious cause..... it's definitely something to do with the install of Norton Security though, no question about it!

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

Thankfully we have the internet to help us.  Bowber, I had the exact same problem...except my version of Norton was downloaded from Comcast.  They had a change in the "free" version they supply to Comcast customers.  To update to the new version, the installer wanted/needed to first uninstall the current Norton software.  After that uninstall is where I received the first message that my version of Win 7 was not genuine.

And Quads...THANK YOU for the post.  Spent way too much time yesterday doing searches looking for similar issues, then found this post this morning.  Once I ran the MS "Fix It"...it did Fix it.  It re-set the version info, went in, typed in the Key Code and we're back to normal.  (Depending on your version of normal  ;-)

Many Thanks...!

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

Hello

Please remember we had windows updates this week. One of them might have played a role in this also. Remember that FixIt was created way before Norton Security came out. There are updates that are always checking the roots of programs. Microsoft must have had a lot of complaints from people having the same problem way before Norton Security came out.

Quads is a malware removal specialist who would know the correct FixIt's and how to find them.

For this particular computer...it hadn't even been turned on for over a month and auto updates are turned off on all four of my Windows computers.  Maybe Microsoft responded when Norton should have...?

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

I am encountering this same issue on my machine. I tried running the Microsoft FixIt, but am still getting that my windows is not genuine. All I did was turn on my machine, buy Norton Security 2015, and had it automatically replace Norton Internet Security 2014. Now my Windows is not considered genuine anymore.

Hello

If you are running win 8, have you turned off Fast Startup? Have you run all the live updates and restarted your computer?

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

FYI: I am using Windows 7 Pro. I was able to resolve this issue after trying a lot of things that didn't work.

Resolution:

  • Uninstall Norton Security completely (saving old settings)
  • Re-activate Windows using product key
  • Re-install Norton Security

I think the key item here is uninstalling whatever Norton you initially had on the system. I updated a few other of my machines after understanding this pattern and ran into no issues. Thus, this must likely be a bug with the way in which Norton Security 2015 handles "upgrading" from Norton Internet Security 2014.

@floplot,

This issue occurred for me using Windows 7 Pro, similar to the original poster. In addition, once Windows is not considered "genuine" anymore, you cannot run Windows Update.

Microsoft's solution for this, and one that I've used from time to time over the years, is to use the activate function and it will go on line and reactivate without any formality or complaints.

Worth reading through this:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/activating-windows-faq#1TC=windows-7

Note:

If I activated Windows, why is Windows on my computer non-genuine?

Genuine Windows is a recurring process that checks your product key to ensure it's being used with the hardware it was paired with during activation. If the product key is found to be non-genuine, or not valid, it's likely that the product key is either being used on another computer or is counterfeit.

So if you get the not genuine message it is not necessarily due to anything that Norton or anything else did unless it changed something that Microsoft does monitor as part of the "genuine validation" process.

And back after the December 2014 updates there was a flood of these error messages due to a faulty Windows Update!

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

Hi @huwyngr,

Microsoft's solution for this, and one that I've used from time to time over the years, is to use the activate function and it will go on line and reactivate without any formality or complaints.

Worth reading through this:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/activating-windows-faq#1TC=windows-7

(1) Manually calling the activate program (slui.exe) as well as (2) using the activate UI interface on Windows start up are both things that I tried and they failed with the following error message:

A problem occurred when Windows tried to activate.  Error Code 0x8007000D.

You are correct that this may be related to the Windows Update program checking to see if you have a genuine version of Windows on start up, but why that check fails appears to be related to permission issues caused by the Norton Security 2015 upgrade from Norton Internet Security 2014. The permission issue I encountered could not be resolved using the Microsoft FixIt solution suggested above.

Below is a list of some of the URLs for unsuccessful solutions that I tried before realizing I should try uninstalling Norton Security 2015, re-activating Windows, and then re-installing Norton Security 2015:

This is obviously a Windows issue with the way in which it determines if you have a genuine version of Windows. However, in my specific case, the only catalyst to this "Windows is not genuine" error was attempting to install Norton Security 2015 and have it take care of removing Norton Internet Security 2014.

I can post screenshots of these error messages if that would help. My main reason for posting here is to make sure other people don't go through the same issue.

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

Thanks for the background -- I'll have to let others try on this.

My recollection when non-genuine came up was that I got a specific link to retry and that did it and I don't remember it as a Microsoft FixIt.

I'd hate to have to apply:

Windows 7 displays "Windows is not Genuine" with an error code of 0x80070005   !  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2008385

which specifically refers to changed permissions but it appears only to apply to:

  • Windows 7 Professional
  • Windows 7 Enterprise
  • Windows 7 Ultimate

and I have Home Premium which is one difference. Do you have one of those?

Re: Windows 7 now incorrectly showing as non genuine after Norton security install

@huwyngr,

My specific error code was 0x8007000D, which is pretty ambiguous and means "The data is invalid."

When I ran MGADiag.exe (Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool), I did not encounter any errors. However, when I went to the Licensing tab, it displayed: "C:\Windows\system32\slmgr.vbs(1333, 5) (null): The data is invalid." So, I think we may have encountered slightly different issues.

My specific operating system version is: Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1.
