windows defender

My W10 was updated and I get messages from MS telling me to turn Windows Defender on. If it is on will it interfere with my Norton Internet Security?

Re: windows defender

Yes it will interfere with Norton.

Are you sure you are not seeing a message to turn on a new feature that will periodically start Windows Defender to give a secondary scan of your system?

Are you sure your Norton is working correctly? Look for a green check mark in the Norton icon in your system tray.

Re: windows defender

I understand that Defender interferes with my Norton software and I will NOT use it at all since it interferes.

Am I correct to say that this comment is irrelevant?

"Are you sure you are not seeing a message to turn on a new feature that will periodically start Windows Defender to give a secondary scan of your system?"

And YES, I have a green arrow telling me my Norton software is working.

Re: windows defender

We have no way of knowing a user's knowledge and you did ask " If it is on will it interfere with my Norton Internet Security?" That is why I provided the answer I did.

That comment may be irrelevant if it is not what you are seeing. You must remember that we cannot see your system and have to ask questions as part of the diagnostic process. Win 10 Anniversary Edition added a periodic scan with Defender as an option. I was just asking if that is the message you are seeing?

Re: windows defender

I honestly do not recall the details of the MS message about Defender.

Where ever I saw an option for Defender, I chose NO or OFF.

Thank you very much for your very prompt response.

Does this KB Article Message: "Your version of Norton product is incompatible with this version of Windows..." appears after I upgrade to latest version of Windows 10 help?

Re: windows defender

that's the thing i saw...   but clicking on upgrade it only went as far as stage 3....

i'm waiting for it to go wrong again....   it hasnt worked properly after 4 reboots so far.   the last one, skype put me in the preview programme and norton's icon never appeared in the sys tray...  10 minutes after the pc started i clicked on the desktop icon for the program and then the icon appeared in the sys tray...

I hoped that KB Article could help you.   Since I'm not a Windows 10 user I prefer to leave to those who know this OS to try to help you.

What do you see when you click on Yes in stage 3?

Are you using a Windows Admin account while doing this?

You might look at disabling the Fast Startup feature that can cause issues. Even if you had turned this off, the anniversary update turns it back on.  If you use Windows  10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.

Re: windows defender

ive only restarted the pc 5 times...

each until the 4th had a "slow load" of something...  so it must have been settling down from the w10/ann install.

2 times ive had the defender pop up.  1st time i ignored it, instead going into norton and liveupdating

2nd time i clicked the defender pop up for update...  it did stage 3 and then disappeared... no stage 4

havent had it since...  i also havent seen skype since either...

norton is showing as running in the sys tray on this boot up and says it is quite happy if i open the program

Re: windows defender

Good to hear.

The Win 10 AU did require a number of updates and restarts on my system. As you say, it may have just needed to settle down.
