Winpatrol always being flagged with every new release....

I really get tired of this. Every single time a new version of WP is released. NS flags it and removes it. I always have to report it as a false positive and its gets removed rather quickly. Still it is not the point and gets old. Why does Norton/Symantec always flag this program each new release?

Re: Winpatrol always being flagged with every new release....

Ruiware is not satisfying Norton.  Not all developers are willing to expend the necessary resources to satisfy Norton.   Not all developer are in the know as to how to satisfy Norton.
suggest you contact winpatrol support... maybe they're not aware

WS.Reputation.1 ~ you may Restore / Exclude
You may cross check by Choose File and / or Search hash at VirusTotal (link is external) or upload file to VirSCAN (link is external) and Jotti.   (link is external)

EDIT:  Just downloaded wpsetup.exe 33.5.2015.3 from vendor ~ Norton Internet Security is happy.  No flag.

Re: Winpatrol always being flagged with every new release....

Still being flagged for me here. My settings are different from set defaults with in NS. Sonar and Heuristic are both set to Aggressive. If you change to those. I bet it will flag it for you as well.

Mine are Aggressive...I have all Settings with an Aggressive option set to Aggressive

Re: Winpatrol always being flagged with every new release....

Weird. Still flagged here. Just tried again with the link. You are using NIS and I am using NS. That might make a difference as well? Either way. As much as it kills me. Reported once again to Symantec as a false positive.

Re: Winpatrol always being flagged with every new release....

Yeah, I noted you are NS.  That's why I posted NIS.  Guess, we have a NS/NIS anomaly.
If you think Aggressive is causal. Try Default.   Maybe NS engines are better ?

virustotal likes the fingerprint...so, the WS is subjective NS v NIS ~  Interesting !
my pull was to downloads vs your desktop ?

Re: Winpatrol always being flagged with every new release....

I saved to my desktop when Firefox prompted me. I have Firefox set to always prompt when downloading something.

Same here...so, I tried desktop with same happy flag.... WADU

Re: Winpatrol always being flagged with every new release....

I think it may be bjm_'s first suggestion the Winpatrol does not register correctly with Norton when they put out a new release to have the file whitelisted. Have you asked them about this ongoing issue?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Winpatrol always being flagged with every new release....

I think NS is much more aggressive when it comes to flagging files and downloads, than with my experience of NIS.

Wow, just when I was ready to upgrade from NIS to NS another glitch.

I have used WinPatrol for years and NIS also and never seen this happen.

I hope someone else that has NS will test WinPatrol to see what is going on.

Re: Winpatrol always being flagged with every new release....

Hi, Jim. I think it's a bit like Windows Updates. Wait for a few days maybe a week, and then try downloading for those with Norton Security, and I reckon it would accept WP.

Edit---I just downloaded WinPatrol and NS accepted it, no problem.

Thanks for testing it F4E. NS is looking better since the last update and I will probably do an upgrade in the next few weeks.

Re: Winpatrol always being flagged with every new release....

Last year I asked how Insight worked, how Trust was worked out and never received a satisfactory reply.

Recently received messages about WinPatrol that have never been shown before additionally had to over- ride Norton on the latest update of WinPrivacy which never happened when I first installed the program.

Insight gives a different rating for these programs on different Computers I own, it also gives a worse overall rating on different days when nothing has changed on them.

The thinking behind Insight seems to be good but in practice it seems more broken than working properly. I cannot believe that less than 5 Norton users have Windows Office 2010 installed!

Brett Lowrie the new owner of WinPatrol says he has spent the past month in contact with all the Anti-Virus Companies, apparently there are about 100 different Companies to contact, trying to sort out any problems. Anybody in his situation has to contact each of the Companies individually which along with those Companies internal procedures no doubt causes delays, there is no industry wide co-operation.

Re: Winpatrol always being flagged with every new release....

WinPatrol Plus feature list;

  • Speed up your computer’s start-up by delaying start-up programs you don’t need right away. (Norton does this under Scans >Diagnostic Report)
  • Protect registry key values from being changed without your permission (I'm fairly certain Norton already does this)
  • Protect your hosts file (Norton Signatures do this)
  • Detect and review new start-up programs (Norton does this under Scans >Diagnostic Report)
  • Get alerted to new Windows Services (I don't see why this is important considering Norton monitors for threats and if a new service was a threat Norton would handle it)
  • Lock-down file type associations (Control panel > Default programs. It's rare that another program would take over a file association. Unless you just installed a new program that also handles the same file type or opened a file that could be handled by two different programs. If this feature from WP is making it so the associations don't change then it could be useful.)
  • Get alerted if something tries to change your Home Page (Norton browser protection should handle this. Also I think IE and most web browsers ask you before they change it. Plus it's not difficult to change it back.)
  • Remove unwanted browser add-ons like BHO’s and Toolbars. (Norton would deal with this if it felt it was dangerous. Most BHO's and Toolbars can be removed with an A/V or MBAM.)
  • Review, Display and Kill MULTIPLE running tasks with a single click! (How would the user know what process to kill unless they had enough experience with computers to identify suspicious processes. I wouldn't recommend killing processes willy-nilly.)
  • And much, much, much more (I bet)

Just my thoughts.
