Workaround for Previewing Images in Moderation

The non-Gurus seem to be having problems again this weekend with long delays for approval of images in the forum.  As a workaround, try the following:

  1. Click the Reply link at the bottom of the post containing the unapproved images [i.e., the post containing the Image in Moderation placeholder(s)]
  2. Click the Quote Thread button in the toolbar of the editor as if you were going to quote text from that previous post

You should then be able to preview the unapproved images in the editor, and can cancel the reply if you were only interested in viewing the images.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Lmacri. Our team is working to close this small hole in image moderation. If you notice things like this again, please feel free to contact me directly. Thanks again.

Re: Workaround for Previewing Images in Moderation

Well, this is considered to be a “hole”. Pity; “pictures can say more than words”. Especially to those of us who struggles with the English language. I enjoy this forum, here is a bunch of helpful Norton Fighters and Gurus, and the employees participate in a balanced way. But to me the delayed images is a drawback, in particular during the weekend.

None of us want spam, either through text or images. I have previously asked for a “release” of images; I understand I am in the minority at this forum. I think Norton Community is the only forum I know with “image approval”. I have experienced spam posts both here and at Kaspersky (maybe security forums are more exposed?), but I have never experienced abuse of images.

It has no intention to request a more lenient treatment of images? What damage could an image do?

Hello

I have seen pictures which were not allowed to be used in the Forum. They have an X on the square picture. I don't know what these pictures showed, but we do get pictures which are refused..

Re: Workaround for Previewing Images in Moderation

Hi John, I agree it's a bit more cumbersome than it needs to be. But we're working on ways to make things easier, perhaps by allowing long-time forum members to view images prior to being approved. Also allowing those who uploaded the image to be able to see their own image.

The main thing is that we understand the frustration with not being able to see the image. Your concerns are definitely being heard, and action is being taken to make it easy.

Re: Workaround for Previewing Images in Moderation

How about correlating the level of trust or time an image poster has been a member to immediately allowing their posts with images (additionally requiring a CAPTCHA before all image postings 'might' be an added layer of protection).   For example, I am a level 5 and became a member 6+ years ago, so I most likely would not post a spam image.

Are GURUs required to have their image posts delayed like the rest of us mere mortals?  Could they help with image moderation, if they do not already?

Regardless, the last image I posted today only took 30 minutes in moderation, so that is not too bad. Just suggestions and nary a complaint.

Hi, RK_L . Gurus are not subject to image moderation because of permissions granted to us, but we are unable to moderate images.

That is only done by Symantec employees eg Admins and Mods.

Right. Something we were thinking about was increasing the number of folks who could approve images. That's something to consider way down the line, and would probably require a lot more work. But it's still something on our radar.

Re: Workaround for Previewing Images in Moderation

F4E & T_W,

Thank you.  I am willing to experience a delay in posting images because I would rather deal with that than SPAM in texts and inappropriate images.  Regardless, this forum is very helpful just the way it now exists.

@RK_L

But image moderation does not stop text spam?

What about a rule like this: New members must have their first post(s) manually approved before publishing.

Re: Workaround for Previewing Images in Moderation

There was a long discussion about delays for images in moderation for non-Gurus in the thread Images in Moderation Since 16-Oct-2014.  Extended delays in October 2014 were traced back to a glitch in the forum software and were eventually resolved, but there were several suggestions from users and feedback from Symantec employee Tony Weiss in that thread if anyone is interested.

I was trying to assist others in the forum this weekend who were unable to see my images (and I was unable to see theirs - see Scoop8's thread <here> for one example) so I posted my temporary workaround here in the Forum Feedback board for reference rather than repeat my instructions in multiple threads.

Re: Workaround for Previewing Images in Moderation

What about a rule like this: New members must have their first post(s) manually approved before publishing.

Then we may end up with duplicate posts as the poster feels their post got 'lost' somewhere, so they post again. This is what we saw when there were delays in posts appearing in the early days of the new forum.

This could work as long as there was some notation for the new users that their post would not appear immediately.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

@peterweb
Yes, double, and triple, posts are a possibility with this solution. But I'll repeat your own words: “This could work as long as there was some notation for the new users that their post would not appear immediately.” Clear notations are necessary:

> In Help/FAQ section
> At registering
> After saving the new post
> Maybe an email tied to the new post

The notification must be more visible than a modest banner on top of the page. This scenario will be deviant to the new forum's behavior.

Re: Workaround for Previewing Images in Moderation

@JohnDissident,

I am all for allowing longtime members not having to face image moderation and I want to see  you prevail with your requests..  I just wanted to let Mr. Weiss et al. know that if  a fix cannot be done for some technical reason, that I still appreciate this forum and the help it provides.
