Zeus virus warning scam?

I received a warning (graphic and audio) that a Zeus virus had infected my PC. The audio urged me to phone "Microsoft engineers" at the number displayed for instructions on removing the virus. I used Task Manager to shut down, and then had Norton Security do a scan. It did not find anything. Should I be taking other action?

Best regards,

Pat

Re: Zeus virus warning scam?

This is almost certainly a scam.

I would suggest a second opinion scan using the FREE version of Malwarebytes. You can find it here http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

Be sure you do not accept the offer of the free trial of the Premium version.

If that comes back clean, it may have been some malformed ad on a web site you were visiting. These usually use JavaScript to redirect your browser and present these scary warnings. You can disable JavaScript in your browser(s) or you can try installing an ad blocker extension in the browser.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Yep. Another scam. All it takes is for a fraction of people to fall for it and these crooks make bank.
