Utilities Ultimate Process Scanner

After I run Process Scanner, and it gives me a list of running processes in which to terminate, I'm unsure of which ones to safely terminate, due to an obvious lack of knowledge in computer stuff. Ant tips, guys?

Re: Utilities Ultimate Process Scanner

I have a pre-Win 11 laptop with "only" 4 GB of RAM and an old-school disk drive (my first PC in 1982 was a Xerox 820-II with an 8-bit Z80 4 MHz processor with 64k of 8-bit RAM running CP/M, and a 16-bit 8086 processor with 128k of 16-bit RAM running CP/M 86 and 2 double-sided, double-density 8-inch floppy drives with 980 kB each of storage, but I digress).  Anyway, my laptop has a lot of memory and disk-IO limitations so I am always looking for ways to run a leaner machine.

My first tip is to "tread with caution". Many of the processes are required in order for Windows and apps to function (hardware drivers, memory managers, communication protocols, etc). If you kill one of those, you'll most likely have to reboot to in order to restore your machine back to working order.

My second tip is to "TREAD WITH CAUTION" (need I say more).

My third tip is to run the Toolbox> Speed Up> Startup Optimizer. It will show you all the processes that are getting started automatically that, in a lot of cases, remain in memory and chew up resources. The Expert View is what you'll most likely need, but read and understand the warning that pops up (see previous tips 1 and 2). The Startup Optimizer will show you the name of the process, what the Norton(?) community has to say about whether it needs to run or not, an idea of how important it is, and whether or when to start the process or not. You can also glean more info about the same running processes by using the Startup tab in Windows Task Manager. Of particular interest in Task Manager is who the publisher of the process is. You'll probably recognize names of apps you're running so you'll have a better idea of what's using what. However, it's not uncommon for an app publisher to distribute and install third-party apps, so some of the process publishers you see may not seem to relate to any of your installed apps.

Once you have the information in front of you, evaluate each startup process individually to decide whether you want it started or not. If you're still not sure, Google the process name to learn more about what it's used for and whether or not it's really needed. You may also find information about who might have installed a differently named third-party app by going to your app publishers website (ie. Norton, Adobe, Quicken, etc). If you're still not sure, then err on the side of caution and leave the process as it is.

Disabling a process doesn't delete the app, it just comments it out of the Startup (there used to be a startup text file back in the day, but I'm not sure how Windows handles it now). If you disable a critical process, the next time you boot your system it won't start and you could be in a world of hurt (I'm not sure how you would undo such a mistake short of a Windows restore, but, back in the day, booting in protected mode would give you enough functionality to be able to edit the startup file to put things back the way they were). To test the potential affect of disabling a process, as an experiment, you can use Task Manager to just stop the process. Then do some stuff on your computer and see what happens. If there are problems, a simple reboot will restore the lost functionality.

Some of the processes I have disabled are app update processes (most apps have an update function in a menu so, in most cases, I choose not to have a process running that just looks for new updates), OneDrive (I'm not interested in having my personal information residing on someone else's server so I can access it from any of my devices at any time. The syncing process chews up my limited internet bandwidth, and I have a life outside of my digital devices.), BlueTooth (I don't have any BlueTooth devices that I use with my laptop), Geolocation (my laptop stays home), FAX (who sends or receives FAXs any more), VPN (I'm rarely on public Wi-Fi, so, IF i need VPN, I'll start the one I want to use manually), various processes that are running only to make it real easy to buy stuff, and the list goes on. There are a lot of bells and whistles that I just have no interest in using so why continually consume resources for some functionality that I may use rarely or not at all.

Hope this helps.

Re: Utilities Ultimate Process Scanner

Thanks for the information. Due to the fact that I probably have little more acumen with computer stuff, than say, Homer Simpson, I'm going to take your advice about keeping things as they are.

Jeg er enig. Men tak for din hjælp.

Re: Utilities Ultimate Process Scanner

Re: Utilities Ultimate Process Scanner

Re: Utilities Ultimate Process Scanner
