Core and ISP disagree on data usage

According to Norton Core (Using values reported by 'Previous 30 Days' )  over the past 3 days, Devices have used 5.43 GB (73.49 - 68.06

According to my ISP over the same period I have used 14.34 GB (92.18 - 77.84 GB).

Even if I add the "Today" usage reported by Core,  I still have a difference of over 5G between what core reports and what my ISP reports.  Any idea why I'd see such a large discrepancy?

Re: Core and ISP disagree on data usage

dgt01 My core app shows exactly 5.16 difference in the data "scanned" vice the total data used thus far today? Could this be what you are seeing?

Re: Core and ISP disagree on data usage

SoulAsylum,  I haven't been paying much attention to Traffic Scanned since it didn't seem related to any of the other numbers.  For instance today it says 28.87 GB with total usage Today: 15.47 MB (it's been down almost all day), Yesterday 1.55 GB (again down almost all day), Previous 7 days 23.65 GB and Previous 30 days 75.04 GB.

Comparing ISP vs CORE.  The ISP today is reporting an additional 5.7 GB compared to yesterday vs the 1.55 GB reported by core.

On the plus side,  the "Previous 30 days" went up vs. yesterday by the amount being reported for yesterday.

Re: Core and ISP disagree on data usage

I think the difference is the "scanned" data is somehow the misleading value with the app. I have updated 3 computers just today to the Fall Creators Update and the Core app only shows "2.73 GB data scanned". Total consumption shown in the app shows 8.09 GB as of this posting. FIOS shows the same data usage as the total consumption on the Core app in my case. Do you have a device capable of streaming which is on a network NOT protected by the Core? For instance my VOIP and TV are on the FIOS device yet with WiFi disabled on that device. Nothing connected to the FIOS router Ethernet except a wireless camera. Just a thought.

Re: Core and ISP disagree on data usage

My ISP is on a 25th to 24th cycle.  On the night of the 24th,  I did a factory reset and did not enable the router until I was the ISP reporting 0 data use on the 25th.  I then finished setup of Core and allowed connections.

Today (the 26th),  The ISP is reporting 6.67GB for the period 10/25-11/24.  Norton Core is showing 598MB for today and 1.96GB for all devices for yesterday, last 7 days and last 30 days.  Those 3 matching is comforting but having the Core reporting around 1/3 of the amount reported by the ISP is rather disquieting.

I'm not sure which of the following is true:

1) My ISP might be reporting more than actually sent to them by the CORE

2) Norton is reporting how much traffic is entering it and is generating close to 3 times that on the path to the ISP.

As a reminder,  my configuration is Core connected directly to the ISP modem and that modem being a pure modem (no built in router).

Re: Core and ISP disagree on data usage

As I has said earlier the actual total amount of traffic utilized by your ISP modem may be higher due to Core not scanning all of it.

Re: Core and ISP disagree on data usage

I'm not referring to the "Traffic Scanned" value on the home page but to the "Bandwidth Consumption" under the "NETWORK" item that is then broken down further into "People" and "Devices" for each of "Today", "Yesterday", "Previious 7 days", and "Previous 30 days".

I understand that "Traffic Scanned" is only accounting for what the core deems risky but the help for Bandwidth Consumption claims "The data consumed by all the connected devices in your secure network.  You can view the consumption for the current day, previous day, previous week, or previous month".

dgt01 Have a grand day today and a relaxing weekend. Hopefully the next firmware update will help you figure out what is going on.

Re: Core and ISP disagree on data usage

Hello dgt01 Have you gotten the version 202 firmware update for your Core? Does your issue with bandwidth consumption still persist? Thanks in advance.

Re: Core and ISP disagree on data usage

Half way through the month since my ISP cycle start date and my factory reset on the Core.  Since then the daily discrepancy between the usage as reported by the ISP and by Core (for "All devices"  "Previous 30 Days") has been:

4.7GB, 5.18GB, 5.05GB, 5.54 GB 5.49GB, 5.59GB, ??, 8.64GB, 9.04GB, 10.14GB, 12.58GB, 13.06GB, 13.45GB, 18.92GB

with the totals reported by ISP on day 15 of 60.13GB and Core reporting 41.21 GB.

I believe there are at least two sources for the discrepancies:

1)  On a soft reset or a power cycle,  Core usage for the current day drops to 0.  So depending on when during the day the reset/cycle occurs and how much data had been used at that point,  there could be a wide discrepancy.

2) Bandwidth with Core as the source or destination -- such as firmware updates,  speed test,  interaction between App and Core is counted by the ISP but not reported by the Core.

Re: Core and ISP disagree on data usage

Hello again dgt01. I'm following up to see if the latest firmware version 213 has made any difference and whether your issues are satisfactorily solved.
