Cannot Connect to Minecraft Multiplayer Server

I am attempting to connect to a multiplayer Minecraft server outside my local network using Minecraft Java Edition 1.13.2. I have the correct address, and others have successfully connected to the server--but I cannot. I have attempted to connect to the server with two computers on my Norton Core network, but neither works. I am only getting "connection timed out" messages, but no other errors.

Are there known issues with trying to connect directly to a Minecraft server while using Norton Core? I have tried to enable port forwarding in the Norton Core app for the default Minecraft port, 25565, and I have checked that the Minecraft Launcher is allowed through the firewall. What else must be done to allow computers within a Norton Core-managed network connect to external game servers?

Hello rlfritz. My suggestion is to NOT enable port forwarding to connect to any game server. You expose the network in doing so. Have you done a firewall reset on your Norton product and rebooted? On your Core app do your activity feed/alerts give you any indication of what the error is? Have you set the computer you're connecting from as a priority device and set QOS?

Cheers

Re: Cannot Connect to Minecraft Multiplayer Server

So far, I have a variety of the following on two computers now:

  1. Tried to connect both with and without port forwarding enabled through the Norton Core app on the Minecraft port, 25565;
  2. Performed a firewall reset in the Norton Security app (though I have not customized it much, anyhow);
  3. Seen no notifications in my Norton Core app indicating the traffic may be blocked;
  4. Set the connecting computer as a priority device;
  5. Enabled QoS on that same computer.

All I'm getting on my end is a "connection timed out" message. The guy running the Minecraft server on the other end says he can't see any traffic coming to his machine from mine, and he confirms both that I have the correct address and that a friend external to his LAN has successfully connected to it.

Are you running Windows 10 by chance? Are you launching the game via a native W10 app?

Cheers

Re: Cannot Connect to Minecraft Multiplayer Server

Hello

Have you set the game to use Quiet Mode under the silent Mode in the Administrative Settings.? Can you join any other server in the multiplayer list? Is this issue only when trying to join your friend's server? Is your friend's server listed in the server list? Make sure all of your computers have the latest Java installed.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

I saw a similar issue with another game when Uncategorized was enabled in the Norton Core web filter. Had to uncheck that option to play the game.

First of all you should look at your error. Click on "refresh" on your server list. If still you are having some problems, then try to logging out and logging back into Minecraft. I think you should also check out here the minimum requirements and recommended requirements of the game.

Sorry for the lack of response. I appreciate the efforts to help thus far. I can respond to a few comments at the moment, but some of the suggestions will have to wait until this weekend when I can do more investigation.

SoulAsylum: "Are you running Windows 10 by chance? Are you launching the game via a native W10 app?"

Yes, I am running Windows 10 (Version 10.0.17134 Build 17134). I am launching the game via the Minecraft Java edition for Windows (v. 1.13.2).

While I need to look into all of these, I'll try the last item next. I know for certain that my JRE needs to be updated.

Hmmm. I'm trying to set this up for my teenage daughter to play on her friend's server. The filter is set for 15+, but it may have uncategorized blocked by default. I'll check into that.

Since we have tried this on two computers, the logging in and out has been attempted to no avail. I'll take a look at the requirements, but one of the computers I have been trying to connect to the server is a custom-built gaming desktop using a hard line Ethernet cable connected directly to the router. In terms of minimum specs, we should be fine--but I will double-check.

Re: Cannot Connect to Minecraft Multiplayer Server

So... it's been a couple of weeks, but I figured I owed it to the people who offered suggestions above what the resolution was to this issue.

Turns out my daughter's friend--despite all protestations to the contrary that he had set up his server correctly--had in fact not configured his firewall properly. Once we insisted that we had done everything on our end (including connecting our computer directly to the modem in order to rule out the Norton Core as being the problem), he checked his logs, saw the connection attempts, and then saw his firewall blocking them. He still hasn't sorted it all out, but it looks like the problem was not on our end or with the Norton Core.

Sorry for raising an issue that turned out not to be an issue on our end, and thanks to everyone who contributed.
