Anyone who uses a third-party software updater (e.g., Ninite, Patch My PC, software updaters included in programs like Norton 360, CCleaner, etc.) might be interested in reading GrandMastaJ8610's 19-Apr-2022 Restart Loop Issue in the Malwarebytes forum about recent problems with the Malwarebytes v4.5.8.191 update.  From AdvancedSetup's 21-Apr-2022 post <here> in that thread:

"After researching this issue, we discovered that we had an invalid certificate on our offline installer that 3rd party installers were using. This was causing the problem when used against recently newer updates. The issue has been resolved, and you should no longer experience this issue during updates."

Feedback from other users in that thread indicate that third-party (non-Malwarebytes) software updaters have caused issues with other Malwarebytes updates in the past.

For those who disable MB from starting with Windows you may want to check that setting as it got changed here after the update.  It did the same last update as well.

I'm not sure if this is a bug, but multiple Malwarebytes users are seeing large (~ 10 MB) backup files for MBAMSERVICE.LOG (e.g., MBAMSERVICE.LOG.bk1, MBAMSERVICE.LOG.bk2, etc.) rapidly accumulating in the hidden C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\MBAMService\LOGS folder.  See onebyteyboi's 28-May-2022 Components Upgrade 1.0.1689 Causing Possible Memory Leak?.

I've posted feedback <here> in that thread that these 10 MB backup files look like they first appeared on my system when I installed Malwarebytes Premium v4.5.8.191-1.0.1666 on 20-Apr-2022 and that a new backup file is created every 3 to 4 days, but the OP onebyteyboi says a new 10 MB backup file logging multiple errors and warnings can be created within 10 minutes on their system.

Has anyone running Malwarebytes Premium v4.5.9.198-1.0.1689 noticed that they are unable to eject a removable USB thumb drive after they run a portable app from their USB thumb drive?  I'm not entirely certain yet that Malwarebytes is the guilty party but see my 04-Jun-2022 post in juantho's Malware and PUP PROTECTION Does not allow me to eject my USB after Run .exe in the Malwarebytes forum.

No worries.  It sounds like the high CPU usage and rapid logging in C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\MBAMService\LOGS\MBAMSERVICE.LOG is restricted to a few users and was caused by a conflict with a third-party app. However, I opened a support ticket for the issue I described <above> and AdvancedSetup and Malwarebytes Support have confirmed the problem ejecting a removable USB thumb drive after running the .exe for a portable app is reproducible.  I've submitted Process Monitor logs to the Malwarebytes Engineering Team for analysis but they aren't sure when a bug fix will be released.

Just an FYI that the new Component Package v1.0.1699 (released 09-Jun-2022) has created another bug in Malwarebytes Premium where the real-time Exploit Protection prevents users from opening password-protected Excel .xlsx spreadsheets unless Settings | Security | Exploit Protection | Advanced Settings | Application Behavior Protection | Excel Macro 4.0 Abuse Prevention (enabled by default) is DISABLED.  See Adam2022's 10-Jun-2022 Excel Macro 4.0 Abuse Protection Prevents Opening Password Protected Files for further details.  I have been able to replicate this problem on my own system and Malwarebytes confirms this is a known bug but that "It may take days for a fix or weeks or months".

Unfortunately, the new Malwarebytes Premium v4.5.10.200-1.0.1702 still hasn't fixed either bug I posted about previously.  Specifically, I still can't open a password-protected Excel .xlsx workbook if Settings | Security | Exploit Protection | Advanced Settings | Application Behavior Protection | Excel Macro 4.0 Abuse Prevention is ENABLED (the default setting), and I still can't safely eject a USB thumb drive from the system tray after I run the .exe executable of a portable app from the USB thumb drive. Just an FYI that there appears to be compatibility issue with Malwarebytes after users upgrade to Win 11 v22H2 - see cool57's 21-Sep-2022 Windows 11 22 H2 Upgrade Start Lots a Warnings in Filter Manager in the Malwarebtes for Windows board.  Core Isolation was mentioned as the probably cause of the conflict but I'm not sure if this is the only Windows 11 protection feature that can cause problems with Malwarebytes.

Just for reference, here's what Settings | Update & Security | Windows Security | Device Security | Core Isolation looks like on my Win 10 Pro v21H2 machine.  I believe Memory Integrity is normally turned ON by default on Win 11 machines.

Smart Scan - We just changed the game for scheduled scans with Smart Scan! The Smart Scan option now allows a scheduled scan to start only if the computer is in an idle state. Limiting scheduled scans to start only idle time will provide a significant performance improvement as the default nightly scheduled scan (that is typically skipped because the device is usually powered off at night) will no longer kickoff when the computer is first started and hog resources that are needed for the task at hand.

  • Smart Scan is automatically enabled for the default scheduled scan

  • Smart Scan is on by default for all new scheduled scans

Scan reminder for new downloads - Our Free product is now even more amazing with new logic that reminds you to scan when we find new files in the download folder. While this isn’t a substitute for Real-Time Protection, it helps build better security habits.

Security Advisor:

  • Check startup apps - Assists you in optimizing your computer performance by helping to find apps that have a high impact on Windows startup.

  • Notify for new issues - Updated the display logic so that these notifications no longer auto-dismiss.

New background - Malwarebytes has a fresh new look thank to the newly added Clean Sky background. Now users can choose between three great backgrounds to personalize Malwarebytes.

Improved error handling for update issues - Today users see an error dialog if the UI is open when a background update fails. This is a poor user experience because the issue is most often automatically resolved on the next update attempt.
