11 yo smarter the Norton Family

"Here are the keys to the liquor cabinet but don't use them."  That's what Norton Family tells my kid, "Don't disable the browser extension because you shouldn't."   I need a better solution that doesn't rely on the conscience of my 11 year old to not turn off the browser extension.  Have you been to middle school?  Not exactly a sanctuary for the righteous.  Without the browser extension enabled, Norton Family is totally useless.

Wait, isn't there a "second layer of protection".  It's useless too.  Youtube and Google Search are both blocked sites in my parent admin portal, but my son's browser history is full of Youtube videos and Google searches (that's right, my son is smart enough to disable the browser extension but he hasn't found how to clear the search history, yet).

And, not one video has been recorded in NF's "Video" feature.  Why?  The browser extension isn't enable.

When other parents complain, NF admins just say enable the browser extension.  Silly parents, we should have thought about that--shucks...   NF is working hard to convince parents that they care about protecting children online.  They don't.  I am not usually so gullible.

Wait. Wait. Wait.  That's it.  I've finally figured it out.  They think that if a child is smart enough to disable a browser extension, they are mature enough to go to whatever site they want.  That's why forum admins treat other parents like sheep:  "Get back in line and stay in your place.  We know how to parent your children better than you."  And, that's just it. They think they're better than us.  Got that message LOUD and CLEAR.

Please teach me more, oh great admins; tell me all the ways that I can be a better parent.  What other keys should I give them?

Hi

Sorry for the inconvenience. We understand your concerns and we are constantly looking to improve this behavior.
We are evaluating various options to address this extension dependency for Norton Family.

With respect to the 2nd layer of protection, could you please clear the browser cache and try again.
If you still see any problems in 2nd layer we can analyze the issue through a remote session.

Best Regards

Also, note that there is currently no technical way to stop someone from disabling an extension. It is possible in a corporate environment, where your company controls the browser settings and extensions, however, this is not possible from a consumer standpoint.

If there were a way we would absolutely implement that. We would never imply that if a child figures out how to disable or get around parental controls they are mature enough.

Re: 11 yo smarter the Norton Family

You can enforce that the family plugin is always installed and cannot be removed. It involves adding a new key to your registry:

  1. Open your registry editor as an administrator
  2. Go to: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome
  3. If the Chrome path does not yet exist, pleas create one. After that create a new key with the value: ExtensionInstallForcelist
  4. Go to your chrome browser and retrieve the extension ID from the plugin (manage extensions, ID should be shown on this page).
  5. Add a REG_SZ value, as a name: 1 (or the first option available), value the value you retrieved for the extension ID.
  6. Close your registry editor.

Also see attached screenshot for the result, couldn't upload a jpg, so it's printed to a PDF.

Re: 11 yo smarter the Norton Family

Hi

The above is called as "Enterprise Group Policy" settings for browsers. As we mentioned earlier, this setting is meant for any enterprise product and not for consumer products. Enterprise policies are specifically meant for managed devices running Enterprise Chrome.  In-fact we were earlier working with popular browser companies like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge etc., and made a request to use these settings for Norton Family, but we haven't got the approval to use it on a consumer chrome version.  That's why we couldn't utilize these type of registry settings for Norton Family extension.

Though it is an enterprise setting, as of today it does works for any consumer version of chrome (but this may change anytime in future based on browser updates).  So, as an individual you can still use this setting on your child device to get tamper protection for browser extensions.
