subscribed and got a scam norton email

I downloaded Norton to a new computer a day ago.  Today I also downloaded another license the download to an old computer that I fixed. Today I also received one of those scam Norton emails saying that I am being charged 439.99 for a product. I chatted with Norton and there is no charge, they said it is a scam email. I know it is a scam, but is it a coincidence that I received that just after downloading Norton? I have never gotten the Norton scam email before, and have had Norton on other devices for a long time.  Is there some kind of security problem with Norton?

Norton cannot control/stop anyone from sending you an email pretending to be Norton. And there are so many scammers out there, there is no way for Norton to know about every scam.

And it is not just Norton being targeted. Microsoft and McAfee are also targets of this kind of scam. And you do not even have to use that product to receive these scams. Obviously, it is easier to catch the scam if you are not using the product. 

Consumers have to be on their toes these days to help protect themselves against such scams. Norton customers can check the email sender against this information.   Is this email from Norton legitimate?

They don't even know you are a Norton customer.  They just send these out at random, knowing that a good percentage of recipients will be using Norton.  Those who don't will immediately recognize the scam and ignore the email.  They hope the Norton users will take the bait.

Nobody has published your email from Norton. As bjm_ notes above, these are scam emails being sent to random email addresses. The senders have no way of knowing if you ever had a specific product. They are just playing the odds.

You received spam/scam email. 
Just delete the spam/scam email. 
Do not interact with the spam/scam email. 

  • Never click on links or download attachments from unknown sources.  
  • Hover your mouse over the links contained in emails to check if they are legitimate– don’t click unless you are sure they are safe.  
  • Question the validity of any email that asks you to submit personal or financial information.

Thanks all for the replies. 

I guess consensus is that it is a coincidence that I got the scam email right after the 2 software downloads, I will accept that, but still keep a wary eye on things.

I just tried that and it lists  "Pwned in 4 data breaches and found no pastes"
