Norton 360 icon keeps moving - 1000th post on this

This is a KNOWN issue that has been around for quite a few years.  I have been in contact with Norton's support and even had it escalated but none of them seem to know how to fix the issue.  Their techs have  logged onto my PC remotely several times, meddle with various settings just to come to the same conclusion I tell them every time.  How is a company such as Norton (who we trust all of our information and security with) unable to remedy what I can only imagine to be a simple yet elusive issue?  Yes, there is a work-around which is the same as what I figured out by copying the contents of the shortcut, deleting the shortcut and then creating another one but that only works until the next time Norton updates.  Surely a well paid tech company can remedy a small yet inconvenient and annoying issue???

Dan do you have Windows set to auto arrange your desktop icons or align icons to grid? All my machines are the latter, align icons to grid. both Windows 10 and 11, ALL my icons remain where I want them to be placed, period!!

Re: Norton 360 icon keeps moving - 1000th post on this

This problem of the Norton 360 Big Ugly Yellow Icon moving around didn't begin with me until 360 Update 22.22.8.15 which was Sunday. I never had a problem of this sort from Norton since 1997. Every time I shutdown and reopen my computer the Big Ugly Yellow Icon has shifted from the left upper corner to the right lower corner on the screen. Interestingly today when I shifted from Browser view to windows desktop view the ugly icon had shifted back to the lower right hand corner and a completely new Hewlett Packard Support Icon, I had never seen, replaced it in the right hand corner. This must be tied to Norton 360's program updater service that I thought I had turned off. Interestingly a very old virus from years back would do the exact things I mention above and below.

The reason I post is to alert people to the fact when Norton 360 automatically updated to 22.22.8.15 it scrambled ever Program Icon and Document File on my Windows Desktop. Some  Document files were lost in the shuffle. In other words its best practice to have a Backup before that update to preserve files. Plus every file and program on my desktop was locked to grid and the update 22.22.8.15 still shifted them.

Another Major bug I'm experiencing in 22.22.8.15 is that 360 is not recording dates from selected scans. That can be very problematic and lead to repeats of repeats and wondering if the scan took place at all.

IMO what Norton failed to take into account is there are so many updates to Windows 10 and versions of Windows replacing one another, what's good for one maybe poisonous to another.  We've moved into a dangerous age of hackers where the Security products must be unquestionable and the integrity of the employees servicing them is above reproach.

Thanks for your reply SoulAsylum.

I do indeed have those options correct however I forgot to mention that in my initial post.  Thanks again for your suggestion.  Cheers!

Dan, check this Windows setting as shown below. Allowing a theme can cause icons to change as well.

Maybe on the desktop:

  1. Right click on the desktop

  2. Select View

    1. Uncheck ‘Auto Arrange Icons’

    2. Check ‘Align Icons to Grid’

  3. Arrange your icons in the way you want them

  4. Right click on the desktop

  5. Left click Refresh (this is the key for Windows remembering your icon locations)

Step #5 may be the key?

Re: Norton 360 icon keeps moving - 1000th post on this

I experienced this problem for the first time sometime in the last week.  It might have been Sunday as a previous poster commented but I don't recall.  Searching for a solution led me here.  None of the solutions presented above worked for me, though I did find a workaround.

Delete the icon from the desktop.  (no, this does not delete the Norton program, just the desktop link to open it)

I rarely have a need to get into the Norton user interface, and when I do, I have the option of opening it via the Windows/Start menu on the bottom left, or right-clicking on the icon in the tray in the bottom right.  They all open the same program, so the desktop icon is redundant.

Since I deleted the icon from the desktop it hasn't re-appeared, and is no longer an annoyance.  It may re-appear on a future update, but I can always delete it again.  Problem solved.
