Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

Good Morning,

So, I have been fortunate, over the last few days, to receive great HELP & Advice from these forums when I was dealing with malware on my HP laptop (plus compromised Modem and Router). There REALLY are a great many wonderful/knowledgeable people on these forums (both Gurus and non-Gurus)! :o)

Well, my (compromised) Modem and Router have NOT YET been replaced by my ISP, hence I am still a bit "jumpy" regarding cybersecurity.

AS of yesterday...

I noticed that when I run Norton Quick Scan or Norton Full Scan, and I move the Quick Scan or Full Scan pop-up a little higher up towards the top of the desktop screen, a small black bar appears. Approximately 4 inches long and 1 inch thick. Within the bar there are 4 separate depictions (sorry I can't provide screen shot).

How best to describe the depictions within the black bar?

1.) 2 half pages

2.) 2/3 and 1/3 page

3.) 1 full page and 2 half pages

4.) 4 quarter pages

The Black bar also appears when I run MBAM and move MBAM, while scan is ON, further towards the top of desktop screen. The Black bar disappears once I move the pop-ups further down. The rest of the desktop screen becomes blurry (until I move the pop-up further down).

This has never happened before, hence is this part of a Windows update or is this something sinister?

This is NOT the black solid bar ALL across the top of screen (I did try to research this via a google search) that some people are frustrated about.

If this is part of a windows update then fine, yet if not?

It is a priority of mine to get my ISP to replace my (compromised) modem and router (plus new SSID and password) ASAP, yet until that is said and done I remain a bit "jumpy" as a senior citizen layperson!

I thank you for having taken the time to read this post (and hopefully providing me with an answer)!

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

David,

Just a quckie:

<< How best to describe the depictions within the black bar?  >>

My keyboard, it's a HP with a very full set of keys, has in line with the F Function keys another group of 3 of which the first is "Print Screen"  For some reason WINKEY + Print Scrn/Sys Req! makes an image of the full screen as you see it. You then have to save that sso I just paste it into my image software Irfanview, save that as a named file that you can find again.

You can then paste that into a document or into your message here although I can't immediately recall what has to be done (it's only 0900 here in Florida! But there's icon in the toolbar in the group with the quote functions. Mine looks like a framed picture and if you hover over it it shows IMCE. Click on it and it should show a list of images and doing it just now, highlighting one from 2014, and clicking on Insert does this:

Now the question is will it go when I upload this message to Tech Outpost? On another Forum I think I have to Upload it first and then the Norton Forum System is aware of it. Let's see

WOW It works if you follow the instructions! Hope that helps explaining. HOWEVER it is likely that those are images that first of all I had to UPLOAD using that function here instead of INSERT .....  That's the bit that is not at the top of my memory yet!

Hugh,

Thank You ever so much for reading this post/responding to it! :o)

In closing the "Chrome OS'" thread I mentioned some of the wonderful people on these forums (that includes you Hugh) and, of course, thanked SoulAsylum for ALL the Advice/Help and patience with me.

So, the only thing I have ever "uploaded" were e-mail attachments (scanned them into my laptop via WiFi printer) and my CPA, out-of-state, talked me through the process over the phone. It turns out that he does NOT care for a shoe box full of receipts! LOL

I'm not sure that I have the same software you have, yet I shall have a look and report back!

The best to you, Hugh!

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

Yes I saw all that and appreciated your kind remarks.

If you are still on Windows <g> the only thing you may not have yet is << my image software Irfanview   >> but you can use anything that gives you a .jpg file and Windows has an app already. The rest is either on your Windows PC or in the Forum system software -- I've used since at least Windows 7 days and probably before since I date back to 2008 here!

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

David. The old DOS style black boxes you are seeing are most likely system updates being applied. I would first, manually check Windows updates and install ALL updates that are available. Once there are no more available reboot the computer another time. Next, do the same with your Norton installation, manually run live updates and install all updates that are available. You MAY have to reboot and do so more than once. When you get to the point where no more Norton updates are available, restart a final time. Recheck for the dialogs continuing to appear.

SA,

Thank You for the good advice (I shall be sure to follow it)!

This Black Bar MAY be part of a Windows update, hence my posting here. As in, "Yeah, sure we have that on our laptops as well...part of Windows 11 update!"

I wouldn't mind having an A.I./OS system such as Scarlett Johansson in the Sci-Fi movie Her.

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA & Hugh,

So, the good news is that I finally managed to boke an appointment with my ISP. I explained to them what had happened (in chronological order) and what needs to happen:

1.) New Modem (firmware)

2.) New Router (firmware) (new  SSID/new password)

3.) Encrypt NEW Wi-Fi password

They should drop by the house today.

The BAD news is that it took me various attempts to sign-in here...

I kept getting the message at Norton Website, "Your computer appears to be sending too many requests at one time. Please try again later."

So, THAT IS new since the malware...someone IS using my device!

Wish me luck!

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

I did as you suggested...

I ran all the Microsoft Windows updates (possible) and the same goes for Norton updates, yet the Black Box remains. If this is merely some Windows update feature then I don't mind. I am more concerned if this has to do with the malware/some other person(s) in control of my HP laptop?

Kudos0

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA & Hugh,

So, some other person(s) HAS been using my HP laptop (remotely). When I chose "Shut Down," I get a prompt someone else is using this device "if you shut down now they will loose their info/work (or something like that).

I tried posting in this forum Monday 3 pm and I kept getting "Your computer is..."

My appointment with the ISP technician was between 5 - 6 pm. My ISP informed this would cost me $49.95.

The Guy checked the outside first (details) metering/speed???

Thereafter he came inside and I explained to him about the malware (Pre-Thanksgiving), that I'm not in control of the HP laptop entirely and that, following your advice, I need a new Modem & Router (Firmware).

His response was, "OK!"

Brand NEW Modem (different model) and Brand New Router (same model). I told him I NEED a NEW SSID plus Wi-Fi password (if I am to regain control of my laptop).

He took apart the old modem/cables and old router/cables. Then unpacked the New Modem and Router. Re-wired Modem (set up) re-wired Router (set up) and told me to come up with the SSID/Wi-Fi password.

Since the laptop was being used by some other person(s)...he used his smart phone, to go online ISP website, to enter NEW  SSID and a new password (NOT on the Router).

Then came the moment of truth and I had to manually input the Network Wi-Fi password on my HP laptop...which worked on the second attempt. I don't KNOW if, at that moment, some other person(s) was still on my HP laptop remotely!

My NEW network name (SSID) appeared, post entering new Wi-Fi password, "Connected, secure." It is still 1 account/Public Network/5 GHz.

It was LATE at night and I had a KILLER migraine headache, hence I turned OFF the laptop. Normally I would have run ALL the Norton plus MBAM scans, yet I was simply to beat! ;o(

It was a VERY heartwarming feeling...ALL the work that peterweb, Hugh, and SA have put into "Operation: Rescue HP Laltop!"

This morning I ran ALL the scans starting with Norton (everything as it should be), however, when I tried to run the MBAM Premium it spent 18 minutes stuck in "checking for updates" mode (1st step)...the entire scan never takes longer than 2 minutes and 45 seconds. Shut down MBAM started the scan over same results (stuck in "checking for updates"). I restarted the laptop and ran MBAM again...the same result stuck in "check for updates"...ran over...and...over...eventually went back to normal 2.45 minutes (entire scan)!

I decided to test out how long it takes to load web pages (rather slow), including this website, hence this posting of mine.

It took several attempts to load "London Fields" on Tubi website, yet after numerous attempts I was able to watch the film.

I will check for software updates/restart the laptop OFTEN!

I would appreciate any & all advice/input. THANK YOU "GOOD PEOPLE!" ;o)

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

So, download speed also seems slow (aside from web pages loading slowly). I updated MBAM Premium ("slow as molasses"), yet I WAS able to update MBAM (restarted laptop) ran several MBAM scans ALL clear (then again I also got the ALL clear when some other person(s) was using my laptop).

I have updated Norton (nothing unusually long in update process...normal) and restarted laptop...ran several Norton scans ALL clear (then again I also got the ALL clear when some other person(s) was using my laptop).

Windows Microsoft updates (NO new updates).

Norton Software Updater suggested the Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome require updates.

Google Chrome took a VERY long time to update & Edge is still in the process of updating.

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

Hi David,

I was going to post that I get a similar blue screen warning if I have left, eg, a document open, just as simple as copying something to Word Pad and leaving it there in case I need it ..... BUT I decided to ask Google what it had to say about your description:

When I chose "Shut Down," I get a prompt someone else is using this device "if you shut down now they will loose their info/work

It came up with this at the top of the list:

https://www.makeuseof.com/windows-someone-else-using-this-pc/

And the first thing this lists is that it can often be AntiVirus software !

I'll leave it to SA to help you further in sorting this out!

-----

I'm glad to know that the changing of the hardware went smoothly -- Spectrum charge me $50 way back and it was well worth it. I may get them back in if I can't work out which of the three sound outputs from my TV is which: TV speakers (supposed to be off); Sound bar fed via USB connection (I think?) or Bluetooth transmitter to my Phonak hearing aids fed via optical output to the dedicated Phonak transmitter!

Then I might know why sometimes the TV Remote volume up/down affects what I hear and sometimes it does not!

Sa,

Paranoia vs. Being Cautious...

This Malware on my HP laptop, plus Router problem, has "rattled my cage!" ;o(

I have certainly LEARNED a great deal here from the Norton Community (Norton Fighters), both from Guru's and non-Gurus, yet I'm not quite sure that I am "out of the woods!" This is, after all, day ONE with NEW Modem/Router and SSID and Wi-Fi password, hence I am going to postpone signing-in anywhere else (other than here).

A Kudos for your thoughts...

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

David

And just came across this -- in a totally different context on another support forum I'm semi-active on:

<<  If by "reboot" you mean that you just start it up back up in the morning after its overnight shutdown, this is a reminder that you must have "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" UNCHECKED in Power Options or else you do not get the full benefit you'd like from starting it back up, i.e. not all of "gremlins" are necessarily removed in a fast startup process.   >>

Worth check this out too. It's why RESTART cleans up (or should) when SHUT DOWN / START like we do overnight can speed things up by working partly from a copy saved on shutting down.

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

Hugh,

I find it very kind/sweet of you to research, "When I chose "Shut Down," I get a prompt someone else is using this device "if you shut down now they will loose their info/work.' I SHALL BE SURE to follow up on your hyperlink article (since you went through so much trouble).

So, I have had both Norton AV software as well as MBAM Premium for years, yet I have never gotten, "When I chose "Shut Down," I get a prompt someone else is using this device "if you shut down now they will loose their info/work.' said message prior to choosing "Shut Down."

Then again...

I DID un-install Windows 11 Home - downloaded it again - re-installed it - searched for Windows updates .

I also added a Standard User Account (which I have NOT yet made use of) for surfing the web.

On a separate note...

Because you mentioned your hearing aid...

Decades ago, back in the days of West Germany (The Cold War), my German Wife had a good friend (also German of course) who, in turn, had a senior Citizen Dad with hearing aids.

Back in the day, upon exciting a German Department store, hearing aids would be sure to set off the alarm system. Store detectives were posted at the exit to intercept a potential shoplifter. It was an embarrassment to said senior citizen, as the gentleman in question was a proud person, yet he was often pulled aside by the store detectives sometimes they accepted the fact that he wore hearing aids, hence false alarm (and, at other times, they frisked him). It bothered him tremendously!

Last, but not least...

I have had, as said, Norton AV software for years, yet never visited these forums. It may have to do with the fact that I lived (relatively) close to a BestBuy/GeekSquad, hence was able to drop-off my laptop with GeekSquad (plus detailed description what needed to be done/was wrong). I have moved out-of-state, following my wife's death (and the next BestBuy/GeekSquad is an hour drive away from here).

There is some TRULY wonderful advice/help on these forums! ;o)

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

David please read this article from Microsoft. The solution for "other users signed in" when shutting down may be as simple as a Windows setting:

(Note:) turning off the "Use my sign-in information to automatically finish setting up my device after an update or restart" switch for each account seems to have resolved my shutdown problem

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/49963-use-sign-info-auto-finish-afte...

Note: Sign off when exiting Windows / shutting down at least once. Lets see if this reoccurs next shutdown scenario.

SA,

THANK YOU for the two sources of information (read both with great interest)! ;o)

"Jumpy"...

I have had, years ago, a major security breach (due to Dell). I had, at the time, an expensive Dell desktop (Well, Dell everything). So, one day I had a problem (Microsoft/software) that I could not resolve myself, hence I contacted Dell Tech Support (overseas). Normally they were always able to assist me via "Remote Assistance," yet THAT one time there was a connection failure. I was told to go to the Dell web site and post my problems there. I did go to the Dell web site, yet I was unable to post anything there (Dell had been hacked). I was rather unfortunate in as much as I picked-up a malicious Java Script plus key logger unbeknown to me (Dell desktop software AV bundle was useless as it did not detect the threat).

I later found out that large amounts of money went missing from my bank accounts. The breach in security was at my end, hence the bank informed its a total loss (on my part). Dell's attitude, when I contacted them, might as well have been, "Shit Happens!"

It could not have come at a worse time as my German Wife needed surgery, hence I took out a second mortgage for $95,000 to cover her medical expenses (everything our insurance did not cover/cover entirely). My Wife was livid ("The Bad Hackers!")! ;o(

The Surgery, at least, went well (to my wife's satisfaction) and she also recuperated well (thankfully)!

The Morale of the lesson...

I got MBAM Premium and Norton AV software.

Things went well thereafter...

Some time ago, after my Wife's death, I clicked on a link inside a ("Safe") website...Norton went batshit crazy, "RED Alert, Red Alert, Red Alert," (Bells and whistles)  a woman's voice came on over my laptop speaks (nearly giving me a heart attack) giving me instructions as to what to do NEXT (the link led to an Identity Theft Website). I forgot the exact wording, yet I was glad that Norton "Blocked" said website.

I contacted the Bank & credit cards to be on the alert.

I was in the process of downsizing the household/moving (Covid-19 in 2021), hence it was not that easy to get an appointment with GeekSquad in-store (BestBuy) to double-check if the laptop was secure.

The purchase of the Norton AV was one of the better discissions I had made (and VERY grateful towards Norton).

So, now to recent events...

The (insert BAD word) malware that landed on my HP laptop...my laptop behaving (thereafter) as if this was a case of MASSIVE demonic possession (worse then Linda Blair ever had it), yet the Norton AV scans ALL came up CLEAN as did the MBAM Premium scans (it seemed, very much, like a contradiction to me).

No BestBuy/GeekSquad (anywhere nearby), hence I thought I might give these forums a chance on "enlightening" me (and they certainly have...THANK YOU VERY MUCH).

So, "Jumpy"... (hopefully out of the woods)

Question...

1.) My Concern is that said (insert BAD word here) malware creator...might have left something behind (should I change Modem/Router plus NEW SSID/Wi-Fi password) and the the Norton Scans (plus Power Eraser) don't' catch it/the same for the MBAM Premium scans.

I'm not saying its an invisible "key logger", yet for arguments sake?

(I AM aware that 100% security is VERY rare...50% of modern/new viruses make it past AV software...each day (insert lots of BAD words here) 10,000 new malware are released onto the Internet! ;o(

2.) There was a brief time delay (Monday night when the ISP technician came to my house)...after having taken apart/down the old modem/router and putting together the NEW Modem and New Router...once the NEW Modem and New Router were hooked up/power ON...there was still a delay of a few minutes where the OLD SSID/Wi-Fi password was still in place (prior to entering a NEW made-up SSID plus New made-up Wi-Fi password online/ISP website...for it to take effect)...until my ISP (local) public network listed the NEW SSID and I had to enter the password manually (underneath New SSID)...it worked on the second attempt (connected, secure).

So, my pessimistic, layperson, mind assumes the worst!

What if the time delay was sufficient for (insert BAD word here) the malware creator (who previously already had access to my laptop) to know the NEW SSID and NEW Wi-Fi password?

A kudos for your thoughts...

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

"To be disturbed or not to be disturbed!"

So, after ALL the necessary (software) changes to the HP laptop, plus NEW Modem (Firmware)/NEW Router/NEW SSID/and NEW Wi-Fi password (and by NO means intending to sound ungrateful)...

...my HP laptop feels like driving a car (while the handbrake is still engaged)...beats me as to why!

Because the MBAM Premium scan ran for 18 minutes yesterday (2 minutes & 45 seconds is normal)...I checked for latest updates (took a LONG time to download). I re-started the laptop (hoping that would fix the problem).

I ran another MBAM scan which took 12m 42 to complete (Norton AV scans run fine by comparison)???

The one page that wont load (of ALL web pages) MY ISP!

Multimedia within web pages (such as pre-views on IMDb) load VERY slowly!

My Bubbles screen saver (Under Screen Saver Settings) "Apply" is faint (and clicking on it is useless). The Bubbles are supposed to kick in after 2m, yet instead the screen goes black!

To calm down...I'm going to try & watch Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn (on Tubi, for free, provided it loads normally)

Technology is great when it works as it is supposed to! ;o)

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

David. I would first run a speed test to compare what upload/download speeds you are getting with what you are paying for. Go here to perform those. If what you are getting on the tests don't match your advertised speeds the most likely cause is ISP throttling OR, you are not correctly provisioned by your ISP. You will need to confer with them.

https://www.speedtest.net/

Secondly if you are allowing MBAM to load when your computer starts up that will cause issues. Disable it.

Lastly check your screensaver settings in Windows. Make any changes needed and make sure you restart to make them the default.

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

Good Morning!

So, I ran the Speed Test:

Download Mbps        Upload Mbps

0.51                                   2.65

Probably NOT SO GREAT.

My ISP has a Speed Test on their web page, Yet I CANNOT load my ISP Home Page! (the ONLY web page that will NOT load)

MBAM is disabled (Windows StartUp).

Regarding Screen Saver...

The "apply" button, for once, was no longer faint (so should work now).

When signing-in to Norton there is:

1.) E-mail address

(underneath it used to say in bright YELLOW "Continue" ...it NO LONGER is in bright yellow when I try to sign instead it is "faint")

I DO NOT know why some buttons are "faint' (wont work when I click on them).

MBAM scan IS STILL spending a VERY LONG time stuck in stage 1.) of the scan "Checking for Updates".

I HAVE managed to fix my ROYAL Micro shredder (lest you think I'm completely inept)!

SA, THANK YOU for your continuing patience with me, "Have a GREAT DAY!" ;o)

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

Sa,

(Still) Good Morning!

"Sluggish," distracted as I am, at times, due to immense back pain (why I no longer drive a car) and prone to migraine headaches (the pain killers for the back pain + the Excedrin/Magnesium for the migraine). :o(

I measure time, when it comes to my HP laptop, in Pre-Malware and Post-Malware...

So, what I forgot to mention...

Prior to the malware my routine:

Pre-Malware Turn On laptop (password protected/albeit Administrator Account) - 'click on" Norton desktop icon - Under Security Device - Chose Performance (position Interface top right 1 inch from top of screen/1 inch from right side of screen) -Surf web - Delete Google Chrome browser/close browser - Run  MBAM scan - Run Norton scans -Turn OFF laptop

(the Norton Performance Interface always stayed in place once I closed the web browser, online or off-line...loyal to a fault/dependable)

Post-Malware

My Norton interface (Performance) which I ALWAYS position top right corner of my laptop while I am online...now disappears while I am online and I have to open Norton 360 ALL over again...and again...and again. This, prior too, was NEVER the case it stayed open top right corner of screen until I closed it and shut down the laptop.

ODD!

I also ALARMINGLY find it ODD that the one web page that WILL NOT load is my ISP Home Page! ;o(

A Kudos for your thoughts...

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA (and Hugh),

I just had an interesting phone conversation with my ISP. I (politely) asked to speak with Internet Tech Support. A charming woman listed to what I had to say and then said, 'Let's have a look at your account!'

She had a rational explanation for the slow Internet Speed...the technician who installed the NEW Modem/New Router, on Monday, forgot to fill-in "speed" (left blank), hence the bare minimum!

She apologized (as my account is 300 something or another speed wise). To make sure ALL is as it should be she ran a speed test  of her own (at the ISP end) , after filling-in the right speed, ...now everything as it should be. ;o)

As far as my ISP Home Page NOT loading at all...

She asked if I used a VPN as part of my AV? I said yes!

Would I mind "turning OFF' the VPN and retry loading my ISP Home Page? It worked better without the VPN.

So, those are 2 mysteries solved (there are a few left over).

SA & Hugh I wish both of you gentlemen, "A Good Day!"

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

Hugh,

My Niece is my CPA (so to speak), and I am in the process of moving (downsizing a 3 bedroom Ranch style house), hence my bills are forwarded to my Niece (I don't have a paper copy of my ISP account). I had to get my Niece to "messenger" a copy of an older bill (in her records) containing the account number/info.

I would have, otherwise, contacted my ISP sooner.

Yes, I can NOW access my ISP with the Norton VPN on. I have not been using a VPN for that long...because I thought the service cost extra (as in $115 per year).

There was a time when I DID NOT even know what a VPN is. I also never looked into my browser for extensions (I use as few apps as possible).

Thank You for sharing, Hugh!

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

I AM using the IMCE radio button, yet I keep getting the file is in excess of 2 mb (which it is not)!

I click IMCE Button - File Browser Google Chrome (Options, top of page, are: Upload/Delete/Search/Insert File) - I click on Upload - Pop-up Chose file - click on "Chose File" (my download folder pops up/click on .jpg file/click open) - .jpg is now under chosen - click on Upload - Upload Failed (file allegedly 2.89 mb, yet the .jpg is only 2,960 KB)

Frustrating!

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

I DO want feedback on the Black Box, now more so then ever, as this is bigger then I thought.

I normally might NOT have noticed the Black Box because it hides (above/beyond Top of Desktop Screen), yet when I run a Norton Quick Scan/Full Scan (I sometimes move the scan pop-up around) and that's how I noticed it in the first place (Post-Malware on my HP laptop).

NOW...

I just discovered that when I click on my google desktop icon (short cut) , and Google page starts to open, NOT yet 100% of screen (and there is yet another Box). Also same 4 different depictions, yet this Box is not Black (and the depictions go from a faint Grey to Blue if you click on them).

This is a square Box top right hand corner of desktop screen (overlapping with Google page as it opens). I DID NOT pay attention as to what happens when I click on my Google browser, yet NOW I DO!

The faint Grey square Box only appears when I launch Google (THIS IS NEW!).

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

Allow me to boot my Windows 11 laptop and see whether anything interesting appears at boot time. I could give you a suggestion to determine once and for all whether any other users/connections are present on the device you have in question. It however would be rather confusing to accomplish. I can suggest looking in your "Programs and Features" for any software titles that are from Best Buy, Geek Squad or the like and remove them there. If there is software installed that came with the laptop OEM such as digital well being, aka Support Assistant, remove that as well. Those are back doors for annoyances like you are seeing. They aren't needed, therefore I always remove that crapware directly out of the box.

SA,

"Allow me to boot my Windows 11 laptop and see whether anything interesting appears at boot time."

THANK YOU ever SO MUCH for going through ALL that trouble! :o)

"I could give you a suggestion to determine once and for all whether any other users/connections are present on the device you have in question. It however would be rather confusing to accomplish."

I shall take you word for it, Sir!

"They aren't needed, therefore I always remove that crapware directly out of the box."

Reminds, years ago, buying Dell desktops from BestBuy and ALL the bundled (junk) software that came with it including McAfee AV...hope they have improved since.

"Those are back doors for annoyances like you are seeing."

SA to me its more eerie, rather then annoying, Post-Malware (on my HP laptop).

Now I am ALSO noticing a Box 2 inches x 2 inches (with the 4 different depictions inside) when I hover over the Full Screen icon with the curser (very top right of browser page - next to X close). Eerie! :o(

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

Inspired by you being a GAMER & your FANCY setup...

I considered buying Detroit: Become Human for PC (a Christmas gift to myself). I AM a Science Fiction fan, yet have not played any video games in 20 years). I went to Steam (registered FREE account) downloaded Demo Version. Installed desk top short cut/clicked on icon...then got the message, "Your Graphics Card is not supported by Detroit: Become Human.

The Game is likely to crash or fail at launch.

Do you still want to launch the Game?

YES!!!

It failed to launch...the Techno God hates me! :o(

My new Azza gaming rig build. No Crypto mining on this machine!!!

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

So, following my graphic card setback (so typical) I decided to "wake up" Cortana. I have had this HP laptop for 3 years, yet I have used VERY few apps (and zero Widgets) and never felt the need for Cortana.

Well, I DID manage to "wake her up" without any setback (or as former President Obama would say," Glitches"), hence I am not entirely inept! :o)

Once the malware landed on my HP laptop....

I disabled the microphone, for privacy reasons, and took a black magic marker and covered up the built-in laptop camera (I never used the Skype feature). So, I had to undo some of those changes!

IS it normal for desktop icons (short cuts) to move around & change position? (I don't recall, PRE-Malware, them moving about)

I wish you a "Good Day, Sir!"

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

Hi David,

I know the moving icons situation only too well -- or rather I used to since I came across a long time ago an effective free software that dealt with this perfectly and simply:

ReIcon v2.0 (Restore Desktop Icon Layouts) - Sordum.org

although I have been using v1.9 since I only found there was a later version when I checked just now for you. I'll probably update although 1.9 seems to do what I want -- I only have one desktop layout at a time and only one monitor although when the resolution of that one got changed somehow I was glad that I could go back to an earlier version of the desktop so easily.

I'll have to leave SA to solve your other situations!

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

Hugh,

Thank you for responding (plus solution). "I thank you, Sir!"

The moving desktop icons would NOT normally bother me as much, yet the malware on my laptop/reseting HP laptop/ISP Tech coming out to the house to swap out modem & router...and still NOT sure about a few things...

After my last post, to SA on this thread, I had a hard time signing-out here on Norton. Search results on google "blank" (even though it found 11 relevant websites)...just "invisible" search results, hence my HP laptop is STILL behaving weird.

I hope ALL is well in Florida! :o)

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

I hope that I did not manage to alienate you somehow...

When I put in the picture of your Azza gaming rig, in a response post, I did not mean to imply thats my stuff. I was merely testing out inserting pictures into posts (ergo your FANCY Gamer rig), however, once the picture was inserted in my post I could no longer include text (below said picture).

Besides...

I have spent so much time talking, on these forums, about my 3 year old HP laptop (and Acer Chromebook 315).

I hope all is well at your end (that this message finds you to be in good health & of good cheer)!

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

I tried a few more attempts to upload the .jpg of the Black Box (inside 4 depictions), yet nothing has changed the "system" claims the file size exceeds the 2 MB limit (although only 2,960 KB).

I have also tried to post (FILE ATTACHMENT) below new post, yet "The selected file 20221208_114856.jpg cannot be uploaded. Only files with the following extensions are allowed: txt, pdf, zip."

To quote Charlie Brown (from "The Peanuts"), "Good Grief!"

I HAVE followed Andmike advice (step-by-step) as to how to go about uploading an image, yet I keep getting the message that the .jpg exceeds 2 MB (whereas it is only 2,960 KB)!

Thank You for reading my post/contributing...

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

David. I've been terribly busy of late and apologize for my tardy follow-up. If you can get an image for your screenshot in the .png format its file size should be smaller and can be posted per the instructions I posted in the earlier "And Mike" link. Thanks to bjm_ for refreshing the link for you.

Regarding Windows 11 and missive small black boxes in the background. I just updated my Win 11 machine and do not see anything related.  My machine is also an HP. A screenshot would seriously help us see what you are seeing in somewhat real time mode.

Since you are worried there MAY, be someone outside your network getting in, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete buttons at the same time to open Task Manager. Scroll down the left side to "USERS" and click. On the right you should see ALL the users that are active. If there is more than one you need to present a screenshot for us to review with you.

There is also a nice little tool from Microsoft named "Process Monitor" that may help with watching what processes are running. Just download to your desktop and run from there. I use this tool religiously on all my machines to keep track of what is and what isn't.

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

There is NO need to be "Uber" polite. You, as a Guru, are handing out advice/real time help as a (very knowledgeable) volunteer in your precious spare time. Thank You (and the many others as well)! :o)

Several years ago...

When I had Dell desktops, bought at BestBuy ("Big Box Store") I sometimes would post software problems on the Dell Forums. On the Dell Forum a Guy who went by the handle "Bug Batter" was very helpful (suggested I buy MBAM Premium...provided me with the freeware version...and informed me about CCleaner/FREE). Also a volunteer who did what he did in his spare time (Guy lived on the Hawaiian Islands).

.png format? I have/know only of .jpg (over the last decade). I know that there are also other formats, yet I am unfamiliar with them (as I never used them...Okay, so I do know what a gif is). Can one convert a .jpg into a .png?

ALL I have is .jpg...(I am old man who lives on a budget and who NEVER used MOST of the FEATURES on my last laptop/this HP laptop)

So, yes Hugh is older then I am, yet Hugh also worked in the IT Industry!

Believe me...

I AM VERY eager to share my desktop screen shoot of said Black Box with you, yet the Techno God keeps blocking me from doing so! ;o(

SA THANK YOU for the Task Manager manager advice as well as for the link (Process Monitor). I shall be sure to follow up on your great advice. :o)

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

So, I DID press control/Alt/Delete at the same time, yet nothing happened. Tried it again with different Control/Alt buttons on my laptop (plus delete at the time) the result nada!

The Techno God REALLY hates me! :o(

I downloaded Process Monitor, its sitting comfortable in my download folder, yet there does not seem to be an install wizard.

When I chose open I get:

Eula    Text Document   4 KB

Procmon   Application  1,642 KB

Procmon ?   Compiled HTML File  55 KB

Procmon64  Application   857 KB

Procmon64a Application  788 KB

So, I click on Procmon   Application  1,642 KB ?

Sorry to hear that you are being kept very busy (hopefully things will slow down & you get to enjoy your FANCY Gaming Rig)!

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

David, run this exe for process monitor. Procmon64  Application   857 KB. You can actually copy/paste it to your desktop then run it from there.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete should open to a blue background screen, the task manager button in the last in the listing. Click it.

As for the screenshot, I use the Snip and Sketch app built into Windows. Click Windows Key + Shift + S to open it if its installed. Install from the link provided if you do not already have it. It will save your screenshots in the .png format when you save the file. The file sizes will generally be small due to the formatting difference.

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

"Good morning!" :o)

THANK YOU for clarifying the Procmon thingy!

I opened  Procmon64  Application   857 KB (very long list of apps) not quite sure what to make of it as a layperson...

Good News...

I finally, after several attempts, got the TASK Manager to open (currently lists ONLY 1 user...Owner).

THANK YOU for the Snip and Sketch app (I shall be sure to follow up on it).

Wishing you a (warm) Sunday in your neck of the woods! :o)

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

"Good Morning!" (once again)

So, regarding Snip and Sketch app...

I tried it prior to going to Microsoft Store (link which you had provided), yet did not work (at Microsoft Store 3 people mentioned that it stopped working following Windows 11 Update).

Well, I clicked on the blue link - Microsoft Store - chose "GET" (option) - NOT in download Folder, however, when I hit Windows icon/shift/S (it appears on screen briefly/top of screen...and then disappears?)

Do I need a third arm to make this work? LOL

Re: Window 11 Black (small) Bar that comes/goes?

SA,

So, I managed to "Find" the Snipping Tool by checking ALL apps...and found it! ;o)

Opened Snipping Tool App - chose "Full-screen mode" -  clicked on "NEW" (took a snapshot of my Desktop)

Well, the Black Bar/Box has to be finessed in order to make an appearance...hidden beyond sight top of Desktop screen...I have to move a pop-up upwards towards the top of screen in order to get Black Bar/Box to come down...I have to hold the pop-up in place (top of screen) via curser...pop-up and Black Bar/Box are sharp image (background becomes a blur)

"I ONLY have two arms!" LOL

How DO I get delay to work? (It is faint/clicking on it wont work)

Snipping Tool

New     Full-screen mode delay (drop down arrow)      No Delay (FAINT)      ... see more

(I assume this works like a camera that there is a timer)

No rush...NOT life threatening situation...take some time to smell the roses (in your currently busy life)!  :o)
