Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Norton 360 on Android, main menu/settings/security/scans - Safe Ongoing Notifications is enabled.

The security status display when engaged however if I reboot or after some time it disappears, and I need to reenable it for it to show up again. Any solutions on how to fix this?

TIA.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

What device and Android version are you using?

I just tested on my Samsung Tab A on Android 9 and I see what you are saying after a reboot. That could be by design, and the next time a scan is run you will see the notification again. This is just Norton and/or Android clearing all notifications when rebooted.

I'll try to keep an eye on whether I see the notifications disappearing without a reboot. Do you have any idea how long this takes on your device?

No I don't after reboot I usually go into the app and toggle the switch under settings. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

I just checked again now and the notification is still there from this morning.

Next time it disappears, do not touch the setting. Instead pull down on the main 360 interface to run a scan. Then check to see if the notification is there. That is what I did this morning after rebooting.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Thanks again, did as you suggested and as soon as I pulled down to scan the notification icon is now showing again. Would this count as a bug?

Thanks appreciate your help.

Not in my eyes. Restarting a device will often clear any notifications.

The only thing I cannot confirm yet is your saying the notification disappears even if you do not restart the device. Do you have the Smart Scan option turned on under Settings > Security? I have it turned on and 360 seems to automatically scan the device around 5 or 6 am each day, which creates a new notification. I'll try turning this off to see if that will reproduce what you are seeing.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Ok so not a bug but it seems to be operating differently to previously after the recent update. Yes restarting does clear notifications however when rebooting previously the notification would show, adding some comfort in knowing that Norton was running and working.

Disappearing notification, I will keep an eye on and confirm in due course. Yes, smart scan is turned on.

While having the notification come up when it scans may assist, I thought the idea behind the notification was to let you know that the application was running and therefore all parts of Norton are working, just not the scanning part? Have I got this wrong?

Thanks again, appreciate the help.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Same here on both phone (Android 12) and tablet (Android 13) after recent updates.

The tick in circle notification seems to appear and disappear at random. If I use the Android Play Store and there are updates, it will scan them and the tick will appear, so it is running, then some time later it's gone again.

As others, Safe Ongoing Notifications is on.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

The app is still running. It is just the 'older' notification is getting removed from the Android notification area at the top of the screen. I have never seen a notification that noted that Norton was running. The notifications were always for scans or LiveUpdates that had run.

@KremmenUK   Have you been able to determine the time interval that the notification will disappear? As I have noted, I still have not seen the notification disappear other than after rebooting my tablet.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Looking closer .....

My Tablet is displaying the notification this morning, but, my phone wasn't.

Looking even closer, I have the following turned on :

  • Safe Ongoing Notifications
  • Smart Scan
  • Scan System Apps

But, my phone is reporting "You are Protected - Last Scan: 2 days ago". Correct as the log shows "Malware scan ran due to schedule. 07/03", which is 2 days ago.

I manually ran a scan and the notification has returned.

I'll now watch to see when/if it disappears.

Ideally I need to have a scan scheduled every morning then the notification should kick in after the overnight 'Do Not Disturb' turns off.

Q: Is there a scheduled scan setting ?

Kudos0

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

I just checked my tablet and it shows the same as your's, with last scan 2 days ago. The notification is still in the Android notifications at the top of the screen.

I usually leave the Scan System Apps off. I have just turned it on to see if that makes any difference to the notification issue.

Something to note here.  Although the scans may not run, the 360 app is constantly watching in real time for any malicious activity, just like on the PC's. So this is not a security issue.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Notification disappeared overnight. Last scan at 5.01am this morning so that was comforting, LiveUpDate was run the day before so probably within acceptable time frames.

So I have checked the option for Sale Ongoing Notifications/Display security status, imho I think that if the notification isn't showing then it's a bug, sure a very small and insignificant bug but a bug nonetheless, especially as others appear to be encountering the same issue.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

So to clarify. There was no notification showing this morning, even though the scan ran at 5:01 am? I am still not seeing this behaviour. If so, the next step I would suggest is to reinstall the 360 app. Uninstall the 360 app then restart the device. Then reinstall 360 from the Google Play Store app. Sign into your Norton Account to activate the app.

Then I would like you to set up 360 to gather logs to send to Norton if the issue happens again.

Open the 360 app and tap the three bars at the top left. Tap on Settings > General, and scroll down to the Logging section. Turn on Enable Debug Log. Then continue using your device until your issue happens again. After the issue has happened, go back to the Debug Log settings and then tap on Send Error Report with log files. In your submission please include "forum 'your username' " in the Case ID section of the report. Also include a link to this thread. You can turn off logging when you have sent the logs.

If you do send logs, please let me know and I'll notify my contacts to look for them.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Ok, have done all the above except sendoff logs. Should I just reboot, as this stops the notification from showing, and send these logs or wait until it disappears again and then send them?

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

I am also having the exact same issues.  The only way to restore the notifications display is to either go in and untick-retick the switch or run a scan.  This has to be  bug of some sort.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Update .....

After posting, the 'tick notification' remained visible all day and this morning.

Then ..... I opened Play Store and I had 10 updates pending, (none of them were Norton).

After the updates finished the 'tick' had gone. Having seen this before, my next ploy was to go into Play Store Recent Updates and tap one of them to open more detail.

At that point I normally get the Norton green "Safe" banner, but it didn't appear. Norton wasn't running in the background. I opened Norton and the tick appeared.

There is definitely a bug.

I've just uninstalled and reinstalled on both phone and tablet, let's see ...... if it does disappear again I'll set up debug logging.

I'm not concerned with the notification clearing after a reboot. What I would like you to get logs for is when the notification just disappears on its own when the device has not been restarted. So please wait until it disappears on its own and then send the logs before you reboot.

Check my post above with the instructions on sending logs. When you tap on Send Logs it opens an email that is already addressed to the appropriate Norton email. Please fill in the information I asked to add to your submission to help them identify this

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Same here, after a full reinstall, it stayed up for 24hrs, phone Android 12, then according to the history it did a LiveUpdate at 13:46 but by 16:00 the notification had gone and when checked, Norton was not running in the background.

I've also started the debug log for when it happens next.

A few versions ago, after a reboot, after 30 secs or so Norton would auto boot and the notification would auto appear, what changed ?

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Quick update, notification is still staying in place as long as I don't reboot, however I discovered this morning that since I uninstalled and reinstalled live update has not updated...3 days! From one problem to another?? Hope not.

The LiveUpdate is not as important as it used to be. Just like the PC versions, Norton is now using real time online definitions when running scans. So the time between LiveUpdate runs has been extended to download updates for offline use.

How are you determining that Norton is not working in the background? The app itself does not have to be running for the real time protection. As long as the Accessibility Service for Norton 360 in Android settings is turned on, your device is being protected.

If you are saying that the Norton App used to open itself after a reboot, that is a behaviour I have never seen on a mobile version of 360. Scans may run in the background, but the app never opened.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Thanks for the explanation peterweb, you are doing a great job in this thread trying to help us, appreciate it. So my question would be that if these things are not important and if the app is working in the background etc. then why are these things included in the app, I mean if LU is hardly relevant and not updating for days on end, if the notification badge isn't really notifying then just remove them and half if not all of this thread would be redundant....wouldn't it!? Why is Norton filling up the app with irrelevant stuff...yes stuff.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Interesting comment about the notification not auto launching after a reboot.

I've been running Norton Android for many years and I've never had to open Norton to get the notification to appear. After a reboot both my Arlo and Norton notifications used to auto appear after about 30 secs, regular as clockwork. Arlo still does and it's now on its own until I manually launch Norton.

This is not only the tick in circle icon but the one before it. Until the last 2 or 3 updates I've never had to manually launch the notification.

I think this thread where a few of us have noticed and posted indicates something has changed.

Regarding running in the background, when I enter the Play Store and manage Apps. When clicking on a new update I get a green bar at the bottom saying 'Safe'. With no notification the green bar doesn't appear so I'm assuming something isn't working.

This morning the notification, gone again.

My phone had charged to 100% so I was able to check, an hour later, via the phone "Battery and Device Care > Battery > Usage since last full charge" and Norton is nowhere to be seen which makes me wonder if the whole thing has crashed ?

I've not sent the logs in again as I've already sent 2 sets.

As I said, I've been using Norton for many years and this is definitely unusual behaviour in the last few updates.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Ok not sure if this helps but thought I would post an update. More often than not when I reboot the notification badge is visible however Live Update doesn't update automatically any more, I know it's not the necessary as pointed out previously but I keep getting the message that LU hasn't run for 3 days. The other odd thing I noticed is that after I reboot I get a pull down notification that SD card has been found and to tap here to run a scan. Pixel Pro 7 doesn't have an sd card. Hopefully this might help...or not! :-)

Try cycling the setting for SD card scan. Change the setting you now have and restart your device. Then go back and set the scan setting off again and see if you still see this issue.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Since uninstalling and reinstalling, my Tablet, Android 13, has been OK.

My phone (Sammy S10, Android 12) is iffy.

My main issue is when I enter the Play Store and click on any of my installed apps in the manage Apps and Devices.....

Normally when I do I get a yellow Norton 360 banner followed by a green Safe banner. This has been working 100% on my Tablet but on my phone it's hit and miss whether I get this bottom banner.

To me, that indicates Norton isn't running because when I subsequently open the Norton App and perform a manual scan the notification appears and the PS bottom banner starts working again.

Hopefully the 2 sets of logs I sent in will reveal something.

Have you reinstalled Norton on your phone to test like you did on the tablet?

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Morning, yes I did, same procedure on both. Uninstall Norton, reboot phone, reinstall Norton then  sign in.

I had a 360 update yesterday and after the update both devices still showing the 'tick' notification and both showing the 'Safe' popup banner.

All well ?

Er, no ...... this morning, both devices, no 'tick'.

I just give up, why is Norton seemingly stopping randomly ? Seems to be after the overnight 'Do Not Disturb' although my Tablet has been 100% OK since the reinstall about a week ago.

By the lack of posts I have to assume it may be just me. I'm fully up to speed on most things IT related as I was in the industry, but this behaviour has me beat.

The one thing I'm not prepared to do is reset the devices to factory and start again as that is very very time consuming for just one App hiccup.

It's looking like I need to open Norton every morning and slide the 'Ongoing Notifications' off then on to get the notification, then check via Google Play whether it's still monitoring.

Kudos0

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

You feel Norton is not running on your device because of certain indicators you are expecting. Could you try installing an app that will display what apps are using your device's CPU.  Here is an article from Mobile Internist that offers ways to monitor background apps.   https://mobileinternist.com/cpu-usage-android

If you do check this, it will confirm whether Norton is running or not when you do not see notifications.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Thanks for the follow up. That link is almost 4 years old and most of it is out of date. I ended up using Running Apps(RA) under System/Developer options. So boot up and no indicator, go into Norton app and either pull down to scan or go into settings/security and turn off and on Safe Ongoing Notifications either way the notification appears.

When I start up RA shows 2 processes and 1 service(attach1), however after I do either of the above it shows 1 process and 1 service(attach2). Hope this helps.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Todays update :

Norton running all day yesterday, this morning, no tick. As far as I'm aware all that kicks in overnight is DND. There may be some other Samsung or Google housekeeping I'm unaware of but this problem has only been evident for a few weeks now.

Went into Play Store and no banner when checking recent updates.

Went into Norton, ran a scan and tick came back. Checked Play Store, nothing.

Rebooted phone and Play Store banner now working again. I had to manually restart the tick via a manual scan.

Thanks for your time but Norton need to look into this.

I've also taken a screenshot, attached, of Norton fully working after this mornings reboot and scan, I'll see what the difference is next time I suspect it's crashed.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

So what I am seeing from the last two posts is that Norton is running. The issue is just with the notifications.

As already noted, I have escalated this thread. So it is in Norton's hands now.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Thanks, peterweb, your help has been great. First time posted here so when you say it's in Nortons hands now, what does that actually mean?

It's not a huge issue and doesn't stop the app working so all good but I just wonder if this will now fall into the "support blackhole" that so many providers have.

Do you think we wil get acknowledgement of the issue? Feedback?

More of a curiosity question than anything else. Thanks again.

Kudos0

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Unfortunately, unless the Norton developer team needs more information, we are not likely to get feedback in this thread. Sometimes my contacts will update me on an issue. I'll post here if that happens.

Otherwise, the first time we will know anything is when an update to 360 is released and we notice a change in the app's behaviour.

Kudos0

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Another thanks to PW for helping in this thread

My only concern is when I open Play Store and go to Recent Updates and click any item, when I suspect Norton isn't running I get no lower banner that starts yellow saying Norton 360 and then changes to green saying Safe.

On my Tablet this banner, or the notification, has never failed since I reinstalled. On my phone however when the notification has been removed, usually overnight, without a reboot this feature fails to show. If I then reboot the phone it starts working again.

This morning all OK so nothing to check or attach.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

More info .....

The tick disappeared in the last few hours.

So, I went into Developer Options > Running Services, as before, and Norton was nowhere to be seen. I opened the Norton App and ran a scan and checked again, nothing.

Rebooted phone, checked again, and there was Norton, 2 Processes and 1 Service = it's definitely crashing randomly, and opening the App and running a scan doesn't start the process or service.

Just checked again and it's now showing 1 process and 1 service.

I give up.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Thanks for all the extra information and testing you are doing. It gives Norton more things to look at.

Have you had any OS updates to your Samsung device around the time you started seeing this?  Samsung is famous for using proprietary code in their version of Android OS. This proprietary code often bumps up against some apps, including Norton, causing strange behaviour.

Re: Android - ongoing notifications keeps disappearing.

Morning

I've had no major system updates of late that I remember, but not sure exactly when the last one was. I do remember that the last one did have some text that it would be the last update for my S10 as that model has now hit end of the Samsung road. 2019 release date, 4 years.

Like a fool I cleared out the Norton Activity log. Just after I did I remember seeing 3 items listed that had no other items within 12 hours each side and it was about that time it must have crashed.

I've got it all setup again with debug logging and if it goes again I may have some more info.

Thanks for the replies.
