Auto-fix Stuck on Checking System Time

I thought this was reported while in beta but I can't find it.

If I run Auto-fix (Support > Get Support) on one machine NS seems to get stuck on Checking System Time.

Re: Auto-fix Stuck on Checking System Time

It is a very bad habit to run Get Support if your product does not exhibit obvious malfunctions.

Also, although mentionned by a Symantec employee, recently, since it can check and create/delete registry keys, tell me how many users reboot their systems after  they ran Autofix??

Very few...

Dave, I suggest that you "hide" the Get-Support/Autofix button.

Hi Apostolos,

I thought I'd give it a go to see if it improved my shutdown times.

Re: Auto-fix Stuck on Checking System Time

Hi Dave,

I forgot to ask, when you uninstalled reinstalled NS, I do not know how many times, did you take the time to install NIS 14 & test your pc's shutdown behavior??

I'm asking because there is a slim, very slim chance that it's a Windows toxic KB update. (you seem to install almost everything from MS which you shouldn't)...

If with NIS 2014 everything is back to normal then we can safely assume that it's NS... I must have that resolved because there is no way I install NS on both my W7 x64 systems if it's bug with NS... I prefer stay without AV until it's resolved.

Check also in your registry settings if the value is default to 0, if it's 1 change it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management  ClearPageFileAtShutdown

Exit regedit & reboot.

I'm having about 30 secs extra shutdown time on my XP machine, and the only thing our machines have in common, that I know, is ATI GPU drivers.

Cheers,

Re: Auto-fix Stuck on Checking System Time

Thanks for your interest Apostolos, but I do not / did not have and slow shutdowns, or any other problems with N360v21 installed.  As the shutdown problems began for me immediately after the beta was upgraded to Build 91 I can almost guarantee it is related to NSv22.  The exact same shutdown slow downs happened immediately on installing NS on my other Windows 7 x64 machine, which also had no such problem with N360v21.

Cheers!

Yes, I reported this issue, and it is not yet resolved in the RTM build. [As this RTM build is the same as the last beta was (build 110).]

I can only speak for myself, but as I know Autofix never creates problems by simply running it, I also regularly see the advice "run autofix first to see if there is a problem with your installation" here in he forums. This NOT the same as NPE.

And yes of course it can check/delete/ and even create/modify registry values if needed since it is a repair tool. But NS/NIS can do that too. (example: removing a security risk which has traces in the registry)

Re: Auto-fix Stuck on Checking System Time

Krusty,

Was this before or after installing the WiIndows Update to fix the change in the Russian time system ? <g>

He also mentionned here: https://community.norton.com/forums/microsoft-update-kb2998527

that he did not install that update.

NS is the culprit...

Krusty clearly explained that if he switches back to NIS 14 everything comes back to normal so the russian MS KB update is irrelevant.

NS has real shutdown time issues, I'm also seeing it on my XP system, could be memory management, or a faulty NS driver which takes too much time to shut down...

If this is not fixed shortly, there is no question, installing it on both my W7 x64 systems, because hard shutdowns are not good for my pc's or my peace of mind either...

NS is to blame for shutdown issues...

Re: Auto-fix Stuck on Checking System Time

I get the same 'checking system time' hang on my W7 x64 with NS. This is a clean install of NS.

Re: Auto-fix Stuck on Checking System Time

Hi, Krusty. When I reinstalled NSBU, I had the same problem. Fixed by Checking Subscription Status which then also showed the correct number of days showing.

Re: Auto-fix Stuck on Checking System Time

Hi F4E,

When I first post about this on 26-Sep-2014 the problem was there but when I read the announcement that this issue was fixed I gave it a go although there wasn't any issues.  No issues were detected either.

Yes, I ran Subscription Status to update my remaining days too but I don't think that is needed.  Norton products phone home and the days would have synced sooner or later.

Re: Auto-fix Stuck on Checking System Time

I have 22.1.0.9 installed since the other day. I just read the announcement that you linked to see what else this patch fixed. It says that it fixed the autofix problem of it hanging on checking time. Since it mentioned that this problem was fixed, I tried using the autofix. The first time I tried it after having had the patch installed for a couple of days, I still had the problem. My computer has been restarted several times since I got the patch and I still have the problem of it hanging on checking time. There is nothing wrong with the time on my computer. So that problem seems to be still there.

Re: Auto-fix Stuck on Checking System Time

Flo, have you let Auto-fix run for a while  -  like 5 to 10 minutes?

I thought Auto-fix was stuck on one machine but I left it alone and next time I checked it had completed.

Re: Auto-fix Stuck on Checking System Time

Hello Krusty

I am trying the Auto Fix again. It is once again staying on checking system time. I have it minimized now. This time it once again fixed something about installation. That's the 2nd time it's fixed an installation problem and it was a success. Another time I ran it and it said no problems. It seems like if it does finish, it gives me different answers every time if it does finish. Still it does seem to sometimes hang a long time on the checking time and other times, it checks the time very quickly. Grant it, I was running it to see how it works and not because I thought I had a problem.
