Duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons" window

In the  "Notification Area Icons" window, there are 2 "Symantec Service Framework" icons.

The first  "Symantec Service Framework" is right at the start while the second  "Symantec Service Framework" icon is in the middle of the list after Action Centre icon (see attached screenshot)

I think the reason for the duplicate is I upgraded NIS 2010 to NIS 2011 yesterday. I installed NIS 2011 on top of NIS 2010. The reason of the upgrade was to address a different issue as per the link:

How can I remove the duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons" window ?

The icons can be a bit odd sometimes depending on the system.  I think there are two because there are two components in Norton; system and user.  I found the easiest way to deal with it is to set one of the icons to "show" and the other to "hide."  I still have two Symantec Service Frameworks, but only one has an icon now.  It seems to clear up with a few updates.

Re: Duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons" window

Rebooting did not help. I did it again and I am still getting a duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons".

I think, in my case, it is due to installing NIS2011 over NIS2010. Not unless, every NIS computer has the duplicate.

Is there a way to remove the duplicate?

Re: Duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons" window

Try reinstalling Norton and hopefully that may help.
  1. Download the Norton Removal Tool as well as the Norton Internet Security Installation file to the desktop so that it can be easily found later

  2. Physically disconnect your self from the internet. That could include yanking out the ethernet cable/telephone cable from the back of your computer/turning off your wireless with either the wireless switch on your computer or turning off your router.  This is to prevent any cyber attacks while you are vulnerable.  DO NOT RECONNECT UNTIL MENTIONED!
  3. Back up any identity safe data:

  4. Uninstall the Norton software through the add/remove programs and let your computer reboot.

  5. Upon reboot, run the Norton Removal tool installed earlier.  Upon completion, let your computer to reboot or reboot manually (not quite sure why on Windows 7 the NRT doesn't prompt a reboot).

  6. Repeat step 4 two more times just to be sure.

  7. Run the Norton Internet Security 2011 installation file downloaded in step 1.  If you are using Windows Vista and above, right click the installation file and select run as adminstrator (as shown in the screenshot below).

  8. Upon the completion of the installation, reconnect your internet.  Then run liveupdate repeatedly until all upgrades are complete.  You may delete the files you downloaded in step 1.

I don't think there is a problem (or it's a minor windows issue) all the 64 pc's here have 2 icons showing in notification but only one actually shows. this was the case with 2010 and 2011. I just show the top top one.

Re: Duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons" window

Hi tunguska,

As Delphinium mentioned earlier this does not cause a functional problem. As long as NIS is operating normally and is showing secure then having two icons will not hurt anything.

I would recommend simply hiding one of them by selecting "Hide Icons and Notifications" from the drop down list.

Also to make sure, did you run Live Update after installing NIS 2011?

Best wishes.

Thank you all for your inputs.

• I have a Norton 2005 or 2004 product
• I have a Norton 2003 product

Tywin7:

1. I don't see NIS listed there, think it is this "Norton 2006/2007/2008/2009/2010/2011 product " is the one, is it?

2. Have you personally tried it and it remove the duplicate icon?

Allen:

1. Good to know it will not cause a functional problem. Yes, I ran Live Update, shutdown, restart many times and still the duplicate icon is showing.

2. If uninstalling NIS2011 completely and reinstalling NIS2011 works, I am tempted to try it, this is a brand new computer, I'm in the midst of setting up software etc so I might as well clean it up. Do you think it is ok for me to uninstall/reinstall or I should leave it as it is?

Yes that's the one.

__

What I did was log out of Windows *not shutdown* and log out again.  But I usually don't get double icons so assumed that it was a minor glitch.  It didn't happened after that. To log out of windows go to start-->arrow after shutdown-->log off. Then log back in again.

One more question. Does NIS icon actually shows as double in the notification area not just in the list.   Because if its just in the list, then it is a remninant of an old NIS icon that WIndows keep as "history." The list shows what is and was in the notification area, not only what is currently there.

The question is a little confusing to me. It showed up as double in the screenshot I attached in the PDF file in the first post.

Something new to me about Windows keeping the old  "Symantec Service Framework" icon as history. I was thinking it is more of a bug, the NIS 2011 install did not remove the old  "Symantec Service Framework" icon. It would be horrifying that by the time I install NIS 2020, I have 10  "Symantec Service Framework" icons as history icons.

I wouldn't mind leaving this as it is as nothing is broken.

Since I'm in the midst of setting up this new computer, I would not mind cleaning this mess. If unstalling NIS and reinstalling NIS will remove the double icon, it might help to answer questions for other users who has the same issue.

One question:  A couple years back, I uninstall/reinstall, NIS is not smart enough to know I am still installing on the same computer and used up another license. I want to confirm this reinstall will not take up another licence of my 3-user version? If it will not take up another license, I may want to try uninstall and reinstall.

Yes. But do you store any password with Internet Explorer? If so you may want to leave the last option in Internet Explorer alone.  After Ccleaner is done, restart explorer.exe.  All your custom arrangement in your favorites as well as your custom notification area position customization will be reset.

Ok. I will try the  instructions in this page: http://www.7tutorials.com/how-clean-notification-area-icon-cache

I did uninstall NIS 2011 and reinstall NIS 2011

I followed your instructions. Restart twice after removal. In fact I run the removal tool twice.

After uninstalling and restarting, I can still see the double icon (see pdf attachment), this time as ccsvcHst.exe. It don't looked like the removal tool removed all components of NIS.

Next I install NIS 2011, the double icon is still there, the name is now  "Symantec Service Framework" .

In summary, uninstalling and reinstalling NIS does not remove the duplicate icons.

Re: Duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons" window

I should have waited. I ran the batch file. (I should have ask for insturctions on how to remove the double icon by editing the registry)

The batch file was an overkill. It removed the double NIS icon.

But it also removed a number of other icons as follows:

    - Windows host process (Rundll32)
    - Windows Device Installation (USB Input Device)
    - Windows Explorer (Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media)
    - Windows Update

    - Windows Task Manager (Windows Task Manager)

and some other icons that I did not copy down (eg. there was a MS SQL Server 2008 icon, Adobe icon etc )

Are the notifications icons critical? My computer/work won't suffer because I'm missing these icons?

I will have to go away for 2 hours and will be back if there is anything more. Thanks.

Re: Duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons" window

It does not actually deletes those programs. It just purges the old notification list.  If those icon comes up again, it will reappear in the list.

I made you run the batch file because I don't want anybody snooping around the registery and go deleting stuffs there. One small mistake can render your whole computer useless.  Plus, if an inexperienced user with the same problem stumbled upon this thread, it is better they run the batch file instead of go deleting registry keys.

What I'm saying is that if SQL ever launches an icon, it will appear in the notification area. That applys to all new icons that appear there after you have purged it. There is no harm done purging the notification area. That way it is easier to control the behavior of any icon that appear in the list as it is now new and relivent to your PC.

Try running the java test and you will see the java icon popping up in the notification area:

Actually its more of a Windows job, not Norton's.  In fact, I found a Microsoft knowledge base article offering to purge the cache for Windows XP!  It does almost the same thing as the bat file. It deletes the registery key and restarts explorer.exe.

Yes, it sounds like a Microsoft job of not properly maintaining that notification area.

To think about it, Microsoft would not know when to delete the NIS icon. Only when the user initiates an uninstall of NIS, the icon is no longer wanted and should be deleted.

So perhaps, the uninstall program of NIS should search the registry and delete the NIS icon during an uninstall.

Likewise, the install program of NIS should search the registry and delete the existing NIS icon during an install to prevent duplicates.

Hopefully Norton will add software codes to delete old icons, if not, some computers will end up having numerous NIS icons after some years.

Maybe you can make such suggestion here: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Product-Ideas/idb-p/NIS_Suggestions/tab/most-recent

Actually what deleting the registery did (from what I understand) is deleting ALL previous notification icons, not only Norton's.

Re: Duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons" window

Suggestion posted.

Yes, the batch file delete ALL previous notification icons, not only Norton's.

The actual script is as follows:

reg delete "HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify" /v IconStreams /f
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify" /v PastIconsStream /f

I am not an expert in the registry but  you can see two delete statements here. The first delete has a IconStreams switch. The second delete has a PastIconsStream switch. The script should delete only the PastIconsStream and not IconStreams (presumably this is current icons).

In the case of Norton, it should delete ALL "Symantec Service Framework" icons only (don't touch the others non-Norton)  regardless if it is past or current because a new NIS install will create a new "Symantec Service Framework" icon.

Yes quads there is a way to manually delete registry files but if you are doing it manually you might accidently delete the wrong key. That's why I recommended the bat route. I've checked the bat file manually to make sure there is no malicious codes and scanned it with Norton before I recommended it. I've also tested it out to make sure it actually resets the notification list.

Re: Duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons" window

Here is a real twist: after all the trouble and things I had to do to get rid of the "Symantec Service Framework", the "Symantec Service Framework" showed up again! It means there is something else that is causing the "Symantec Service Framework" to duplicate in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons.

The issue now requires the following to fix the issue:

- The uninstall program of NIS should search the registry and delete the  "Symantec Service Framework" icon during an uninstall.

- Likewise, the install program of NIS should search the registry and delete the existing  "Symantec Service Framework" icon during an install to prevent duplicates

- Find out why the "Symantec Service Framework" icon is duplicating in a Windows 7 running NIS2011 when it previously was not duplicating (not due to uninstall/install) and fix the problem.

As mentioned by Allen, the issue does not cause a functional problem so I'm going to leave the issue this time round because I don't know why now it doubles when I have gotten rid of the double icon.

But it will be great if Norton could fix this because it reflects on the quality of the product and the commitment of Norton to deliver superior products.
