Screensaver interruption

I saw another thread discussing this problem marked as "Resolved."  Does anyone have a solution that isn't "The problem mysteriously resolved itself?"

A popup appears with the message "Norton Internet Security is Preforming Background Tasks" and interrupts the screensaver.  It also keeps the computer from going into power save modes.  It does this on multiple third party and windows screensavers (so far, on all that I've tested).  I'm not going to turn off background tasks because that is a temporary solution.  A full system scan runs in the background every week and has completed.  The only correlation I can find is that at the same time these messages pop up, an entry appears in the log that a program was attempting to and was allowed to access the internet.  I don't know if they are related.

I'm running XP with SP3.

Re: Screensaver interruption

I think you saw the same thread I saw:

http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&message.id=78399#M78399

I've had NIS 2010 for only just over a week and noticed the lack of my screensaver quite quickly. I don't do any power save modes - this PC is either on and mainly being used or it's off. Anyway, what I did was as follows:

1. I turned off the Idle Time Scans in Computer Settings. I think this only prevents the Full System Scans which would otherwise run in Idle Time and not Quick Scans, which is fine by me. I run a FSS once a week which is enough for me; Quick Scans are run daily.

2. I went to 'Norton Tasks' on the main NIS window and changed the 'Idle Timeout' to 30 minutes instead of 10 minutes. Since then my screensaver has worked normally without the aggravating 'Norton Internet Security is Performing Background Tasks'  message appearing.

I realise this is only a workaround and I think that Symantec should try to resolve this as soon as possible. I know it's hardly a security problem, but it's an annoyance nevertheless. This didn't happen while I had NIS 2009.

Re: Screensaver interruption

Thanks for your reply, Madeline.  I have some additional information.  My idle time scans were only set to run once a week.  My idle timeout was already 30 minutes.   I watched this morning and the problem occurred again.  When it happened this time, I checked the history to see what triggered the activity and there was no activity in the log.  I set my silent mode to six hours and will wait to see what happens.

To summarize, my idle timeout was 30 minutes and the idle time scans run once a week.  The problem happened again after the screensaver ran for only a few minutes.

I agree that it's definitely something Symantec needs to address.  I don't need pop ups telling me every time Norton does something, only when I need to take an action or if Norton actually found something.  Other than that, it's the best yet.

Re: Screensaver interruption

That's interesting. There don't seem to be any specific settings which either cause or allay this annoyance

My screensaver is still working properly and I noticed something else earlier. We frequently watch DVDs and more often than not, we'd get the 'Background Tasks' pop up during the film, but this hasn't happened since I changed the settings, so I hope that will continue.

I think we'll have to be patient over a proper resolution to this problem because, as I said before, I don't think it'll be a major priority for Symantec!

Maybe I'm deluding myself and my 'problem mysteriously resolved itself'!

I'll be interested to see if you find out more about this.
