Stupid question-what is the WPA key?

I am hooking up a play station to my router via wireless connection
There is a process where you can scan the nearest connections to find your connection
I am able to find mine. When I click to connect it asks for the WPA key
Is that my password to connect via wifi to my router?
Like I use when I connect my iPhone wirelessly to my router?

Re: Stupid question-what is the WPA key?

Hi,

WPA key is used for network authentication.

It uses a pre-shared key -  PSK.

You should use, for max possible security, WPA2 PSK key with AES encryption, if both devices support it.

Hope this helps.

Re: Stupid question-what is the WPA key?

Hi Calls,

Yes that would be the wifi password (not the router access password) that you entered into the router's wifi security settings tab.  The WPA password needs to be entered into every device that you want to have access to your wireless network.

Hi, Calls. You may find the WPA key on the bottom of your router.

That's where mine is listed.

F4E
Isn't the WPA key the password that the individual creates to access the wifi?
That wouldn't be on the router

Re: Stupid question-what is the WPA key?

Yes, your both right.

Some routers that are supplied by the ISP have a sticker with the SSID (router name) and the password printed on it.

It can be changed but they make it different for each router so most people keep it set that way.
