Norton Security Scan is awol

Norton Security Scan is awol.

When Norton subscription product is reviewed or reloaded it indicates "laptop device security is not protected."

Yet, Norton Safe Web appears to be working.

When Norton Security Scan is reloaded, indicates it has already be loaded.

How do I load Norton Security Scan so I can see and use it? (No, not in hidden icons.)

How do I know if Norton is really working?

Two indicators do not match.

Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

cali grl,

Please look at this link and see if the icon with the red circle matches the one had that is now awol and that you're referring to as Norton Security Scan.  If so, that was a free on demand limited feature scanner and would end up on peoples PCs when they uninstall full versions if they missed unchecking a box.  It used to be available as a free download.

The Icon above the one with the red circle labeled as Norton Security is what you should see on your desktop and a smaller one in your system tray if you have a full version of Norton installed.

Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

No, I'm using wrong terminology then.

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v71537759

This is what I want back. Don't know what this is called. Green text window that, hopefully, says at top "You are protected."

Have managed to get the Norton icon back in my systems tray. But when I click on it, all I get is a red boxed message:

"Bad image...Norton file is either not designated to run on Windows or contains an error....try installing again...or contact vendor software for support."

Have reinstalled Norton again today, says successfully installed in one place, not in another.

Here's what I continue to have:

Norton Safe Search

Norton Safe Web green box with white check, top right corner

Three Norton messages on search page about phishing, etc.

Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

OK lets try this, click the Start button, then "All Programs",

scroll down to a folder called "Norton Security", click on that folder and then you should see one of the icons that says "Norton Security".  Click on that and it should bring up the Norton interface.

Once that's open, at the top in the blue border it should say something like Norton Security, Norton 360, Norton Antivirus, etc. Make a note of it. Then look down at the bottom. It should state either Subscription is Active or how many days you have left on your subscription. Make a note of that.

Next, near the top right hand side you should see "Help", click on that.  Another window will open. On the right hand side about midway you'll see "About".  Click on that.

A smaller window will open and it should display the "Version Number".

Please post this info back.

Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

In Programs, Norton Security is there with a drop down which only contains one item which is the Norton logo with white checkmark that also says Norton Security (none of the other dropdowns in your example.) When I click on the dropdown, up pops the message as noted earlier: "Bad image: ...Norton is either not designated to run on Windows or contains and error...contact vendor software for support..."

This after I have received a "successful reloading" message several times after reloading.

Would show you a snip of message box but it won't let me.

I had "Norton Security for 1". Was automatically upgraded to Norton 360 Standard some time around March 5.2020, which consistently locked up my system. Spoke with tech support, she took it back down to what I had before. Everything fine for about two weeks, then Norton interface disappeared. Know this timing for a fact because I have been checking and running my own, additional scans and checking status every single evening before shutting down for about a year.

Did print out the text sent to me after she downgraded me. Shows 360 cancelled. Does not show a version # of what I reverted back to. Does show my revised annual subscription as Active and renewing on 11/14/2020. Also contains new Key and Serial Number. To clarify, everything worked fine for about two weeks after this adjustment.

Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

Further clarification, everything stops cold after the "Bad Image" message, as if I do not have an active subscription. Yet, Norton Search still works.

Norton Security Scan is not subscription product.  Norton Security Scan cannot be installed when user has Norton subscription product already installed.   Norton Security Scan is free and should not be installed with Norton subscription product.

Norton browser extensions are not integral to Norton subscription product.   Norton browser extensions do not require Norton subscription product.

I'm wondering if you need to completely uninstall Norton subscription product and then reinstall Norton Security Scan.  Then completely uninstall Norton Security Scan.  Then reinstall Norton subscription product.

I'm not sure I understand what you're seeing, your side.
I'm not sure I understand "Norton Security Scan is awol".

If you have properly installed - working Norton subscription product.  You cannot install Norton Security Scan.  You do not want Norton Security Scan with properly installed - working Norton subscription product.

Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

Going on two weeks of only being about 50% sure Norton is working correctly. Used the term "Norton Security Scan" because someone was using that term incorrectly on an outside blog it turns out. What I want back is the green "You are Protected" window, box, whatever, JJ has an image of above. If you read above, you will see the what happens when I click on the only Norton icon that is available to me. This is getting beyond frustrating. Getting ready to just ask for a refund and move on to something easier. As you can read, have been experiencing Norton problems for a month now. I understand short staffing in a pandemic, but I was irritated and offended Norton arbitrarily upgraded me which caused massive problems on my system. Now the whole Norton website is getting overblown with sales pitches and it feels like there is very little concern for current customers. Very, very disappointed in Norton for not offering more clickable solutions.

Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

No Norton Security Scan--I was misled on name.

Can someone PLEASE tell me the name of Norton window that contains the following is called as this is what I am missing:

Green Window: Your are protected/Scans/Live Update/History/Advanced/Security Online Safety/Performance/More Norton

I have uninstalled, then installed Norton three times now. Still no green window. Only receive a red box message: "Bad image, and, literally, the words "Norton is either not designated to run on Windows or contains an error...contact vendor software for support" when I click on Norton icon in task bar or in C drive.

Operating system: Windows 10

"Norton Security for 1" was automatically upgraded to Norton 360. My computer immediately started crashing a couple of times a day. Called Norton support (when you still could), said they would move me back to original Norton Security I had. Received an email from Norton confirming change.

Feel this was a legit message from Norton because I verified Key and Serial #'s they listed from "old" Norton were same as when I signed on. Kept copy of new Key and Serial #'s this email provided.

Everything worked fine for a bit--perhaps a week, then green "You are Protected" window disappeared and has been gone for two weeks.

Green box with white check for web site rating has remained at top tool bar, Norton Safe Search still comes up, items searched still appear with Norton round green approval (or not). However, I'm not sure if it is truly working...see above.

I do not know what the product version is because I can't get into the Green box to tell you!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Was told in the beginning to be sure and save Key and Serial #, which I have faithfully done. No one mentioned anything about product version.

Pics: cannot provide. Neither the red box nor C drive showing just Norton Security name will allow me to snip or do a screen shot.

Think I have addressed all your comments, thank you.

Set explorer to Show Hidden files/folders by selecting View, Options, Change folder and search options. Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

cal grl,

I would now run a Windows Defender full scan and if you still have Malwarebytes installed, another complete scan with it.  If both of those come back clean, and if you feel up to it, I would also recommend running DISM and SFC scan to check and or repair any missing or corrupted system files on your windows 10 operating system.  Take a look at this MS support article System File Checker tool

If you'd like to try running those, please post back here first and let me know and I'll try to walk you through it.  If not, you can go ahead and try reinstalling your Norton Product by going to your My Norton Account, click on your subscription and selecting download.

Ok, as first order of business, have made my way through your above suggestions and cleaned out one or two Norton file/folders.

Questions on two areas:

C:\ProgramData\(Norton folder): there is a "Norton Security" folder in here from April 2018. Won't let me delete..."folder access denied...need Administrator permission", which would be me. How do I delete? Right clicking and using red "X" at top won't do it. Don't see an option in window when I click on folder.

cali grl,

Before you go any further, please verify if and how you uninstalled Norton per your previous post here and post back to let us know as bjm was trying to figure out.  Its important to know this first.

Next, download the Norton NRnR removal tool from this link and place the file NRnR.exe on your desktop and then run it to ensure Norton been fully removed.  After wards, you can simply delete the NRnR.exe.

After running the NRnR tool look back through windows explorer for the folders I listed in my previous post above and post back your progress.

PS: Reboot your PC after running the NRnR tool.

Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

Go ahead and download the NRnR tool and run it. Once your done running it reboot PC.

Then check and make sure Windows Firewall and Windows Defender are listed in the Windows Security Center.  I believe in Windows 10 you Select the Start button > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security.

Next try running a Full scan with Windows Defender.  Once that done, if no threats are found, close it. If it report it found threats, copy those and post them back here.

Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

With Norton removed, you should now be able to manually delete any remaining folders that reference Norton or Symantec left on your PC from my post above including the Norton Installer folder.

The next thing you'll want to do is check Windows Task Scheduler and delete any left over tasks from Norton.

To  access the Windows task Scheduler, take a look at this youtube video

Once you have the Task Scheduler up, click on the first folder called Task Scheduler Library. Look in the center pane for a task called Norton WSC and right click and select delete it as shown.

Next, open the sub folders as shown and delete any sub folders named Norton.

If you see the task called Remediation listed, click on it and see if the center pane references Norton or Symantec. If so, deleting it as well.  Otherwise, you're done and close the task scheduler.  Close out everything else and reboot your PC.

Note, if you're not sure about any of the above, post back here first and ask!

Remerciements0

Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

All of the above and earlier above carefully checked and deleted re Norton and Symantec, including Remediation. Rebooted.

Only two problem areas left containing Norton folders/files in Program Data:

One is labeled Norton Security. Checked Properties and all 5 files have 0 bytes, so I guess harmless? Folder and files will not delete.

Other is in Norton Installer. Contains files (see attached.) Folder and files will not allow me to delete. They are read only/Administration only. How do I delete?

Remerciements0

Re: Norton Security Scan is awol

They are read only/Administration only

cali grl,

The only reasons I can think of right off is ether your user account does not have Administrator Rights or Norton has not been removed from your PC.

Try running the NRnR tool again, but this time, click on the "Advanced tab" and ensure you select "REMOVE ONLY". Then click OK and then run the tool.

Reboot PC.

Now see if those folders are gone.  If not, start the windows Task Manager and click on the Process Tab. If you see a button or tick labeled "Show all Processes from all Users", check or click it.  Now look for a process called NortonSecurity.exe.  if you see it in the list, Norton is still somehow installed and running.

If this is the case, I'd suspect its because you're not logged in through an Administrative Account on your PC.

Also, Please Note, due to Security Concerns, Most users will not open attached PDF nor Zipped files.  Please take screen shots by pressing the PRINT SCRN Key on your keyboard.  Open Windows PAINT Program and select PASTE.  Click Save as either JPEG or PNG to your desk top and then follow this LINK on how to post image in you post.
