My device was hacked with Norton 360 installed

hi all

just a heads up my phone was hacked today the hack passed through norton 360 ( all settings at max including vpn) which was installed on my android phone attached its self to both the phone and the sim it the proceeded to ring numbers at random ( computer generated ) and leave insulting messages and text also voice mails the front screen showed VIRGIN YOU ARE FxxxxD and plays  laughing.  I have factory reset my phone and organised new sim and reported the incident  I have tried to escalate this with Norton no success apparently I was not the first to be hacked this way today according to network provider

[Edit: Clarified the subject]

Re: My device was hacked with Norton 360 installed

I am escalating this thread to see if a SIM card attack is something that Norton would protect against.

Exact same situation happened to me on my OnePluse 9pro and now on my S22 Ultra factory reset done on both. My SIM displays as SIM 1 on the S22.The one Plus was deactivated but I'm using the same number different SIM card on S22 should there be a concern here ??

Re: My device was hacked with Norton 360 installed

it really needs looking into as my phone is totally corrupted even after a number of factory resets + ( new sim) this hack/virus is still evident i have also talked to other phone users on different networks / different types of phone it even affects ios phones all with similar issues and the hack as always been the same so i think we need a new form of Norton to stop this

Re: My device was hacked with Norton 360 installed

Have any of the phones showing this attack been rooted?

Also, is it possible that someone here could remove the SIM card from the phone and reset to factory, and test to see if the device gets hacked without the SIM card?

Re: My device was hacked with Norton 360 installed

sorry  but after long talk with o2 i destroyed the sim and they are sending me a new sim/number ( original sim was not working properly after the  attack even with number change ) also put phone in for sanitisation with local repair centre as errors were evident even with no sim installed and factory resets

Re: My device was hacked with Norton 360 installed

I have been following this thread with some interest and much trepidation. I have never heard of this kind of SIM attack.

Do you have idea as to how the hack occurred? An Email, SMS text, file download, new app? Voicemail?

Can you tie it back to anything special that happened?

And what do you mean by errors evident after factory reset?

Re: My device was hacked with Norton 360 installed

Errors on the devices itself without a SIM installed, suggests, the phone was indeed rooted by the hack/SIM swap to take over your wireless account. Have the techs found evidence supporting a suggestion that Norton failed to prevent a direct attack against the device? Had Norton gave any indication that the device was compromised at any point? And, has your provider seen evidence of a SIM swap hack having taken place? A SIM swap hack wouldn't have anything to do with Norton since that would be a hacker/caller, taking direct control of your wireless account, directly calling the provider with credentials they already possessed.

When you performed the very first factory reset did you also, remove all accounts on the device prior to doing the factory reset? If so that should have untied your credentials from the device. It will be interesting to learn what your sanitization results are, please keep the forum updated.

Re: My device was hacked with Norton 360 installed

hi

i removed the sim almost immediately but that didn't stop them running up a huge bill  at this time o2 have been brilliant and having checked i don't normally go over my limit have agreed to waver to charges and issued a new sim and number as for the phone after factory resetting ( number of times  all accounts removed )there are errors with the functions ( keeps re sizing, apps are self deleting and turns on and off without being touched and screen goes fuzzy )yes it was connected to the internet (wifi ) through our router which is protected by  very strong anti hack/anti virus software and i do not pair any of my devises so they having been checked are ok

Re: My device was hacked with Norton 360 installed

@normski53,

Thank you for the info concerning your phone.

It sounds very mysterious as to how this phone call could render your phone so useless. When you say old modem talk the only thing I can think of is the sound of calling  a fax phone. Has anybody found a common name for this virus / attack? I would assume there is no way as of now to prevent this.

I hope your phone comes clean for you and you resolve all of your issues.
