What causes a Man in the Middle attack on windows

I just had a man in the middle attack pop up and I shut down my network temporary and will change my password later as a result. I was looking in my history to see if I could find the exact cause because this is the second time i've had this happen. Is it possible that Firefox is causing Norton to think a man in the middle attack is happening? Can bad internet also do this? None of my other devices detect this. I also have parents in my house that understand very little of these types of things and think everything will be ok (hints why I have to change my password later). Really I just want to know if Norton has a way of telling what caused it? There's not a lot of information available for me to go on besides documentation on what it is. I want to know if it's a false positive or not.
