Norton 360 Installed - getting error messages in Action Centre - Antispyware and Antivirus not installed. Windows 7

I just recently noticed that Norton 360 has updated to Version 22.22.7.14

I then have constantly had the Windows Action Centre flag constantly flag that I do not have Windows Firewall protection, Windows Antispyware and Antiviirus protection.
I go to select the installed product and it will not accept my selection of Norton 360 product that I have had the product installed and Liveupdates selected.

I have followed the instructions recently to RnR Norton to no affect.

I know that I am operating an old system Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

I am also on a Sony VAIO VPCEB64FG.

I am not that great with computers, but wish to be protected when I am browsing on my laptop.
I also decided to run a Windows Update as I know that it pays to also protect myself from hackers.

Any assistance or more information required - I will try my best

It's Windows doing the moaning. Because you are on Windows 7 it hasn't got all the new bits in it that recognise you are covered and turn this message off.

If you can run Windows Defender it might turn it off. Mind you, Norton might moan then.

An upgrade to Windows 10 would sort it.

I think that you are correct - they are clash with each other.
I am just afraid that with a paid subscription that I am not covered.

I am also wondering if there was a new patch that was rolled out.

I followed some other thread that advised to RnR and LiveUpdate x 3 prior to re-installing

Thank you for your honesty and assistance. I was frustrated as I was thinking which system was at fault - or if I was silly and did something wrong.
Like every device - Windows and Apple you always have to update to keep using the new technology.

I also learned how to post pic's in the thread. This is what I am seeing

It will not let me choose any product - I am about to lose my mind.

Test by using the EICAR test file. This is a text file that is deliberately recognised by anti-virus software as a virus - but isn't.

Save this text in Notepad as EICAR.COM and see what Norton does with it.

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

It should just say that it is blocking it and recognise it. As you can see there is nothing of issue in it.

At least you will know that your antivirus is working.

Do not waste your time, it also happened a couple of years ago with Windows 7, it's up to Norton engineers to fix it with a hotfix. Ask a Guru hear to report it to the appropriate team. You may have to send them some logs.

Temporarily, you can go to Action Center and disable all those notifications. (Turn off messages about...)

Even now, Norton should do it's job regardless of the errors you're seeing in Action Center.

When a patch is available you can re-enable and see if everything is working.

Re: Norton 360 Installed - getting error messages in Action Centre - Antispyware and Antivirus not installed. Windows 7

FWIW,

I'm still running a win 7 SP1 machine with current Ver 22.22.7.14 installed with no noted issues.

I did see, from your pictures, you have Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) currently installed in addition to Norton 360 on your machine. Having multiple AV programs on your machine can cause all kinds of problems. Also, MSE reached its EOS in 2020 and will no longer be supported by MS beginning in 2023.

If this were my machine, I'd start by uninstalling Norton, utilizing the Norton removal tool, but first select advanced options and then select "Remove Only" (do not reinstall at this point).

Next, you'll need to do some further clean-up of your previous Norton install as follows:

Bring up Windows Explorer. Set explorer to Show Hidden files/folders by selecting View, Options, Change folder and search options. Then Select the View tab and, in Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, then click OK.

Now search the following for any left over folders and delete them.

C:\Users\Public\Downloads (Norton - original downloaded files)
C:\Users\your user name\Downloads (original downloader file)
C:\Users\your user name\AppData\LocalLow (any folder in reference to Norton)
C:\Program Files\(Norton Security folder)
C:\Program Files (x86)\(NortonInstaller folder)
C:\Program Files\Common Files\AV\(Norton)
C:\Program Files\Common Files\(Symantec Shared)
C:\ProgramData\(Norton folder)
C:\ProgramData\(NortonInstaller folder)
C:\ProgramData\(Symantec folder if present)

Next, launch the Task Scheduler. Expand the Task Scheduler Library, if present, select the following tasks folders and delete them, Norton 360 and Remediation.

Reboot your machine. Now click on Start, select control panel, programs and features. Select Microsoft Security Essentials and uninstall. If during the uninstall process it asks to keep any data files, select no.

Reboot again. You should now receive an action center alert about not having any AV and asking if you want to allow Windows Defender. Select yes and allow it to update and run its scan.

Next, log into your My Norton account and select download your Norton Product and install. After install, reboot again and then manually run Live Update a couple more times with reboots between.

If during any of the updates you see "Patch Available", click the Apply Now button in the lower right corner.  Ref your pic here

Another reboot after applying any patch.

On a personal note, once your back up and running, I'd recommend turning off the "Norton Software Updater" from within the My Norton Control Panel settings  (Just my two cents).

Let us know if this helps

Re: Norton 360 Installed - getting error messages in Action Centre - Antispyware and Antivirus not installed. Windows 7

I thank you and I have seen that I have had a lot of other Forum Team Members now making sure that I turn off certain MS based products that are long gone.
I think that my laptop may be one of the last people to take up the offer to upgrade for free

I am looking at upgrading once better from chemo (fingers crossed)

I first started the above and got this

Then I got a bit wise and got the following

Also, the first message that first appeared was that MS Security Essentials had blocked it. I was not fast enough on the keyboard

Thank you again for at least letting me know that I am covered

Re: Norton 360 Installed - getting error messages in Action Centre - Antispyware and Antivirus not installed. Windows 7

Thank you for your reply - I have gone through step by step your steps to ensure that I am being covered by Norton 360.

1. Used Norton RnR and used the Advanced Options and removed only

2.  When I came to trying to delete the below folders, I was faced with Administration not allowing me to remove:

C:\Program Files\(Norton Security folder)
C:\ProgramData\(Norton folder)

I then followed your instructions to reboot

3. I have done an Uninstall of MS Essentials and had no issues doing so.

I have still the same issue after numerous reboots

I keep getting the flag messages in the Action Centre - I seem to think it may be not being able to delete the about fragment folders perhaps

I am putting the exact messages that are flagging on my machine and I know that it is hard to diagnose from a Norton Community thread

When I try and delete C:\ProgramData\(Norton folder) - says that it deleted - but I get the below message.

Unsure about how to change permissions though.

When I go to the Action Centre, I go to choose the below it will still not accept when I press 'Yes'

Sorry for the overload of issues - I know that I am pain in the backside.

When I went to do a reboot on the second occasion - it did a complete scan of my C:

Thank you

Were you doing these steps while logged into a Windows Administrator user account? A Standard Windows user account cannot access those Norton files for removal.

Re: Norton 360 Installed - getting error messages in Action Centre - Antispyware and Antivirus not installed. Windows 7

I am just a standard Windows user account, and it would be beyond my computer knowledge how to access those Norton files for removal.

I am wondering if any Guru's will be able to help me further.

I have read that maybe the following may help me :

- Go To "Run"

- Type "CMD"

- Enter - cd:\windows\system32\config\TxR

- run "attrib –H –S *" to make all hidden files in the directory visible.

- run "del *.blf"

- run "del *.regtrans-ms"

- reboot the machine

As per a link in the thread http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-security/windows-firewall-wont-start-error-code-6801-in/cf717fcb-2127-486a-b4c7-2af24a9cde96

I have been looking at the MS side of the notification centre being flagged all the time.

Very happy that I have been able to install the two updates as per the 4th of September 2022 post to my other forum thread that you highlighted.

At the moment I am running the Windows Defender - as I am fearful of not having a Firewall.

First of all, I received this message:

Then I got this

Any further help would sincerely be further grateful for.

I am wondering if anyone could possibly help me any further or know of any patch that Norton are coming out with.

Thank you everyone that has assisted me in my cause for answers.

I will go to the Norton Chat - but as I am ill, I will try and assign some time for this
