Are you talking about Norton Security or Norton Utilities?
What is your Operating System.
Thanks.

All: If an SSD is the master boot drive Norton will detect it as such and will always defrag the boot drive. On Windows 8 and 10 the OS periodically sets "trim" commands and will perform disk optimization during idle times. In your Norton product settings under "Task Scheduling" you can also deselect disk optimization and perform it routinely in a manual fashion. This was the solution in an older thread here on the forums.
Cheers

I got my first SSD about 7 years ago, and at some point early on realized there was some sort of issue here, but somehow got it worked out. It reared its ugly head again a few years later when in the process of some local repairs, norton or windows somehow got reset to start defragging my drive again, but I then got back on top of that.
After many years of trying to ignore this issue, it's also back for me. I changed computers last year and installed a new 2nd ssd the other day and realized I'd better be careful.
I don't know much about computers, but am pretty unhappy with Norton that there is any doubt, at all, left open on this issue. I'm considering removing Norton because of this, but I would need a good replacement, and I'm not sure what the best course of action is.
Someone else already referenced this thread:

and I think an answer in that thread is this:

"...Disable 'Disk Optimization' under Task Scheduling and disable 'Idle Time Optimizer' under Administrative Settings. ..."
So, I am not technically adept, but I still have to keep my computer from getting ruined so my add-on questions are: Is that where we all are with this? Maybe the Norton nag to optimize and implementation of optimization harms SSD (and does significant damage to our situations) and maybe it doesn't? And we have very little control over this? And if we want to turn it off we have to proactively implement this somewhat obscure somewhat hard-to-find 2-part solution that may or may not fully stay in place permanently? Do I have this right?

Hello jlsoaz. To disable Norton disc optimization the previously posted link is indeed the solution for your Norton product. Did you also read this article in my earlier post? Windows 8 and higher will automatically set "TRIM" commands on its own whether your boot drive is SSD or standard. Per the below screenshot you can disable the setting and Windows will ignore optimizing your SSD.
Cheers
