Clunky VPN? Should I switch?

The Norton Icon in the iMac top menu bar does not demonstrate when the VPN connection is offline. I do not see this all of the time and would like an interruption of VPN service notification pop up, functional VPN auto start and the top iMac menu bar icon to sow as offline when the VPN connection is not online.
