Re: Why do I have to turn off VPN in order to print from my laptop?

I have an ASUS laptop paired with an HP Officejet Printer on my home Wi-Fi network. As with the initial contributor on this thread, whenever I am online and trying to print a document, both the internet and VPN will be in operation but the I am not able to complete a working connection with the printer. But, if I turn off the VPN, I can usually establish a working connection and successfully print my document. Why?

Is there a way to fix this besides turning off the VPN every time? Or should I try a different VPN app?

The only thing I can think of is that the VPN encrypts your data as it leaves your computer and the data is directed to the VPN server's IP address. So it is not getting sent to the printer's IP address. And if it did get to the printer it would be garbled because it could not be decrypted.

If you are in a home environment with a properly secured network with strong wifi password you do not get any more protection from a VPN. The protection a VPN gives is needed when using unsecured public wifi connections.

I agree with your analysis. I don't know if this explains Leroy's problem, but I would think it is likely. I need to make sure I have a " properly secured network" at home and then just use a VPN on my mobile phone.
