M/S Office virus or hack or bad update from M/S 4/17/22

FYI  If you do not have a problem do nothing.

I am not sure how this virus happened or where it comes from; and hopefully the fix worked. It is very confusing.

After applying these instruction to M/S Office and it is working

M/S Office Error message:

“Microsoft Office can’t find your license for this application. A repair attempt was unsuccessful or was cancelled. Microsoft Office will now exit.”

Fix: All Control Panel Items (click), Programs and Features (click), Microsoft Office Professional plus 2013 (click), Change program (click) (Do not uninstall)

Selection:   “repair”  (run ?)

This is happening to M/S Office 2019 on Windows 10. I am not sure what Microsoft is doing to correct problem.

This could be a ransom ware attack.

Hello. Was the Office product working before this took place? Are you in an office or home environment? Microsoft Office 2013 has been EOL and unsupported since February of 2017. Windows 8 is also EOL and no longer supported by Microsoft since 2016. So both those offerings are now no longer getting security updates on a regular basis making your system vulnerable.

Did you see or have anything in your Norton history that would indicate you have an issue that needs further attention?

Running the repair option in Programs and Features is the recommended procedure.  Did you do that or are you asking if you should (the answer is "yes")?

Hi Gary Schulze:

You've mentioned both MS Office Professional Plus 2013 (which I believe requires an enterprise license) and MS Office 2019.  Which edition of MS Office 2019 do you have (e.g., Home and Student, Home and Business, etc.) and do you have more than one MS Office product installed on your system?  If so, did you see that “Microsoft Office can’t find your license for this application" error for both products after a recent April 2022 update, and did you have to repair both products to fix that error?  Additional information like the make and model of your computer, the version and build of your Windows operating system (for Win 10 or Win 11 the version and build can be found at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications), and your Norton product and version number (e.g., Norton 360 Deluxe v22.22.3.9) would also be helpful.

I have MS Office Home and Business 2019 Click-to-Run (or C2R, as opposed to a .MSI installation - see the Office Watch article Is My Office .MSI or Click to Run if you aren't sure which you have).  If I open any MS Office 2019 program like Excel, Outlook, etc. and go to File | Office Account I can see that I currently have Version 2203 Build 15028.20204 (Click-to-Run). The release notes for C2R retail versions of MS Office 2019 at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-2019#retail-versions-of-office-2016-c2r-and-office-2019 show that build 15028.20204 (rel. 12-Apr-2022) is the current release and I haven't had any problems since that update was silently installed on my system on 18-Apr-2022.

If you have a MSI version of MS Office then links to information about the KB numbers of updates released in April 2022 can be found at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/office-updates-msi#updates-released-in-past-12-months.

For other users who might be seeing this “Microsoft Office can’t find your license for this application" error message, instructions for repairing Click-to-Run and MSI-based installs can be found in the MS support article Repair an Office Application .
