My desktop PC is running win 8.1 and I am trying to install win 10, but the install fails about 75% into running. Some tips I find on the WWW, say to remove antiviral software. I am afraid to turn Norton off. Is there a temporary way to do this?

Hello SWDunavent. You can temporarily disable Norton "auto-protect", IF, you truly believe Norton is the cause and continue with another upgrade attempt. Right mouse click the Norton icon in the system tray and select Disable Auto Protect. If the upgrade fails again, there could be an intermittent internet connection issue on your part causing the install to hang, as it will use internet resources for updates, etc. while doing the upgrade. Restart your router just to be sure things are good with connectivity. Be sure that you are logging into your devices under an account with admin credentials as well.

If you're not already, create a bootable USB device with the Windows 10 ISO and install from that in off-line mode disconnected from internet services. I would also disconnect ALL devices connected externally before ugrading, AND, make sure your hardware drivers are the latest directly from the manufacturer of your computer. If there is a BIOS update available I would also update that as well.

While Norton is probably not causing your issue, it is nevertheless suggested to always disable an antivirus' auto-protect functionality when performing a major system upgrade. If it remains enabled, it will continually monitor the upgrade process and could cause problems.
