Backup ignores configured file type

Perceived bug: I configured Norton 360 Backup to exclude all preconfigured folders and all preconfigured file types, and then I configured 1 folder of my own and 1 file type of my own. The configured folder contains multiple file types (file extensions). Both in the preview list and in the actual backup Norton tries to backup all file types in the configured folder (which exceeds my allowed back-up size). This seems a bug to me, and this forum seems to be the only way to report it without giving a support/scripted person needless access to my computer.

What you are seeing is how the backup is designed to run. If you add folder, all contents of that folder will be backed up. Your adding the file types would add all files of that type located anywhere on your system.

Are all the files of the file type you are choosing located only in that folder you chose? If so, remove the Folder from the backup set and test again. If not, you will have to look closer at your file/folder organisation so it would be easier to set up the backup.

You may have to remove the files already backed up to your cloud storage so you have room again. Log into your Norton Account and click on View Backup Sets in the Cloud Storage pillar. Then click on the trash can beside any backup set you wish to remove. That will free up the storage for your new backup set.

Thank you, I accept your explanation of its intended functionality.

What remains is a peeve about the screen design. (I might quote not-exact headers because I have to translate from my native language.) In the back-up settings' "What" window, the clickable header "Include and exclude files and folders" is heading the "File Extensions" pane, which misled me to believe the two are linked, while you (and my tests) imply that "Include and exclude files and folders" actually applies to the "Sources" pane on the left. From a UX perspective "Include and exclude files and folders" should get its own pane, and "Sources" and "File Extensions" should share a common pane separate from that. In my humble opinion.

I have been trying to set up the backup on my new laptop.  Backup is pulling in somethingBing, which I don't use and so get zero backed up. The video did not help. What I want to backup is something like C:/*.*  Please help and put me out of my misery.  Thanks in advance.

Um, is C:\ your main boot drive - primary storage?

The backup feature of Norton 360 is not really designed as a full system backup. It is meant for backing up your important files and documents. If you want full drive backups, you should look into a disc imaging package. (credit peterweb)

Thank you for the help.  I went back through every handwritten note I have and found out that what I had been backing up was C:\Users\Owner\OneDrive\Documents.  I believe that it worked before, but I am still learning my way around Norton's interaction with Windows 11.  Thanks for the link.  I'll keep working on it!
