Getting files from defective drive

I had Photoshop Elements on my laptop. Lots of pics, from many years. I still have All the pics, but, the Catalog from Photoshop Elements 10 is a problem. It has settings that has ID's of faces in the pictures. While the Win 8.1 64bit system was quitting on me, I tried to run Chkdsk c: /f /r. Got thru process 1 and 2 without errors, but, quit on 3, with Journal $J problems. Wouldn't go past that. Was trying to figure how to fix the Journal problem. I would start up the laptop, and it would go to a screen with "Problem with startup, errors are being logged, and a restart will happen." Percentage for Error Finding would Stay at 0%. Nothing else would happen.

Ended up getting another computer (desktop w/Win 11). Got a 2 1/2 sata to Usb converter, to see if I could do a Fix from a Working Pc. To maybe try to pull files off the Still accessible drive, that wouldn't boot. I ran a Chkdsk /f /r on the volume, that seemed to go thru, and seemed to say that it fixed some things. But, when I have my New pc up, and plug in the old drive, it comes up (as F drive), and I can go to some folders, but, when I try to look around for the Elements Catalog, I get a screen that says There Was a Problem, Error logs will be created, and the system will reboot. Process goes to 100%, then a reboot, but not sure how that did any Fixing of the drive. Get same thing when I try "browsing" the old drive again. If I go to the Boot/Uefi Config, I can see that my New pc "sees" a Boot Manager from the Old 2 1/2 sata drive. So, the Old drive is still somewhat (??) readable.

What can I use, to try to read (copy... move) files on the old drive? Command Prompt tools from Win 11 (home)?? My Norton Subscription shows that my Utilities 16 is Active, but it installs as Trial period (I Purchased this before Norton discontinued it). My Utilities Premium is Disabled. Wonder if I could somehow get a version of PQMagic, that I have, working, to fix the Volume on the drive. Does that support the UEFI partition setup from Win 8 and up? What ever happened to PQMagic? Think that Norton/Symantec purchased it, then "forgot" about it. There was Another PowerQuest util, Lost and Found that I think got Forgotten also. Wow!! I have four 3 1/2 floppies, with that program... But NO 3 1/2 floppy drive!!

Does Norton Utilities Ultimate have Anything that might work like PQMagic or Lost and Found? DiskDoctor??

Norton Backup had my Documents and lots of Other Data, but, didn't seem to backup my PROGRAMS or their Data files. I Know that I have an Image Backup, but can NOT use it to restore Files, without ERASING my files from my New pc... Hmmm.. Could I do a Restore to an external sata/flash drive??

Re: Getting files from defective drive

Hello markfr. The best possible way to recover the catalog structure is reinstall PS Elements on the new device. Follow the articles below to recover the files you need from the old HD.

Re: Getting files from defective drive

Still working on it. Have files I can get from a System Image backup, but may not be the latest. I thought I had one, but, didn't work out. Got some tags, but, NOT the way it had been set up.

Trying to work with Adobe, to find Specific files to bring over, that have the People Recognition settings, etc. Wish that my Norton Backup had done copies of the Appdata files that probably had those settings. YES, it Had my photos and documents! But, I should have seen that it Excluded certain areas from backup. The WindowsImageBackup that I had done, even though it can't be Restored to a New system, Could be Opened to Browse (and copy) the files/folders. If I can take my Newly downloaded and installed Elements and "stich" back the Data settings for my pictures... It would be Great!  Only have about 20,000+ pics that I had facial recognition in most photos. This person is Uncle Sam... This person is my friend Dave... Had Catalog setup with pics inside folders by Events and Places.

If I could find, from Adobe, what files to bring over; from the ImageBackup or from what I could pull from my old drive (while it works) it would keep me from having to use my Medical benefits to visit Eye doctors, while staring at all those pics, trying to Re-Remember who was who, And Re-placing them in Place/Event folders (these pics were all in Epcot, Florida.... This was Parade on Veteran's day... etc).

Got most of things going ok, otherwise. Able to figure a problem having my E-mail program attach to Then download my new mail. I HAD backup of my e-mail. Once I got it working, only had to go thru the 2,000 Plus New e-mails that had come in, since my old pc quit.

So, a short answer (after you going thru all that above (;->)..

Still Working On it...
