nortonsecurity.exe

I suddenly cannot open an Excel file that I have opened on a monthly basis for the last three years.  I receive a message stating the file is currently open in NortonSecurity.exe and needs to be closed.  Does anyone know how to close the file within NortonSecurity.exe?

As it is, I can make a copy or Save As.  However, I cannot modify, move or rename the current file.

Re: nortonsecurity.exe

What do you see if you click on More Details in the message?

Norton does not open files that are not part of the Norton program. It may be scanning that file.

What Windows version are you using? What Norton version are you using?

Have you run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available? Then restart again. Restarting, not shutdown and startup again if you have Windows Fast Startup feature enabled.   If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10 or 11, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here.

Re: nortonsecurity.exe

Thank you for the reply.

The More Details is inactive.  It won't let me select it.

I am running Windows 11, Version 10.0.22621.  I am not sure how to determine my Norton version number but I have 360 and auto renewal so am assuming I have the most current version.

I have not run LiveUpdate.  I am not even sure how to do it but will do some research and perform it as you recommended.  I will post again once that is complete.  I will also review the Fast Startup information.

Re: nortonsecurity.exe

peterweb: Thank you for the information.  The file is once again openable this weekend.  I think you were correct that Norton was in the process of scanning that particular file which rendered it unopenable.

I appreciate your reply and patience with someone who is rather ignorant when it comes to computers.

1) Open Norton 360 Classic view.
In the upper right corner, click onto Help, and then onto About.
The additional windows will show Version: #

2)

Run LiveUpdate to get the latest Norton product updates

Make sure that you are connected to the Internet.

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. In the Norton product main window, double-click Security, and then click LiveUpdate.

  3. In the Norton LiveUpdate window, when LiveUpdate completes, click OK.
