Scam through 800 number

I called the Norton 800 number that was on their internet site. I wanted to cancel my subscription for 5 users and get the Antivirus for 1 user. I pressed the button to select the option I wanted. Someone came on the line and asked me what I wanted to do. They said no problem. Next thing I know they wanted me to let them go into my computer to process the refund. No way was this happening. After hanging up, I looked up the phone number that I was connected to. I found that I was not connected to the 800 number I dialed. I was connected to a Missouri phone number, 816-394-9160. Don’t know how this could have happened when I used an 800 number from the Norton website. Interested to know if anyone else has had this occur.

Re: Scam through 800 number

the only thing i can think of as a possible reason for the issue is that you might of got the number from doing a search which will result in several ( if not many ) so called support numbers ( for a price of course they will help you)

and not the actual correct norton support number

not sure how it was possibe to get another number without it being forwarded by that number ( call forwarding)

not something i have experienced so hard to say what happened

Re: Scam through 800 number

I have been trying to remember that information. I am searching to see if I can find it. Used to be I could sign into At&T and see the numbers I dialed. They don’t have that anymore. Will let you know if I find the information. Thought I was on an actual legitimate Norton website.

Re: Scam through 800 number

Thank you for the information. There site for sure is not where I found the number I called. Definitely not doubting you. I am quite sure the site I was on showed a site like Norton’s. Next time I called I will be sure to document everything. Thanks again.

Re: Scam through 800 number

If I remember correctly, I signed into my Norton account and went to support. From there I searched for how to cancel my current subscription so I could get a refund and purchase a one user version instead of a 5 user version. The site showed a 1-800 number to call (don’t recall the full number and can’t find the site). I called that number and the person answering answered with Norton Antivirus may I help you. I explained to him and he started his routine.

Maybe, two numbers were transposed?  IDK

Re: Scam through 800 number

in past day or so i have recieved several of the scam /phishing emails (805 area code),  im sure there are some 800# ones that are fake also

if you dont hear a recording ( thank you for calling norton , call maybe recorded , etc... ) press 1 for this system etc..

than i would question if you got the right number ( atleast when i have called it was that way )

there are some that you will find just doing a norton search or norton support search that are not norton but will claim to be or somehow attatched to them ( far as i know they are not)

can try the chat option or the number that is on the norton ( www.norton.com ) varies by country not sure where you are

as for the refund you would need to contact them directly and have receipt ( proof of payment) and see what steps you would have to do, as for replacing the 5 license to 1 ( standard) i would think after you remove and get refund sorted out and us the norton removal tool ( nrn.exe)

to to a fresh install of the standard, , should be same as the other just now with 1 license ( installing wise )

make sure when you do this to get all the updates ( there maybe a patch/build) and restart and run live update again, when that is done ( sometimes its just one or 2 updates to run) should be good and can set the way you wish the settings
