Updates available message every time on startup in Vista

I have a virgin install of Vista and Internet Security 2008 and every time I start the machine the old 2007 style "Updates Available" tab appears.

If I go to "Run live update" in Norton Protection Centre I get the new style boxes.

Why should I get this old box at the bottom right on every boot of Vista?

Are you able to change it in your settings?

Re: Updates available message every time on startup in Vista

Just so you don;t feel "alone" I wanted to say that I have this problem too.  It's on my work computer which I rarely reboot, but everytime I do I get the same message.  The message itself is bogus, since if I run Live update, then reboot, I always always get the same message. Of course if I run again there are never any real updates waiting (and often not the first time either).

So the message is somehow hardwired in to my boot process, and is irrespective of the actual availability of updates.  Since I rarely reboot that computer I just usually ignore it.

Sorry I can;t help other than to provide company for your misery...BTW I have Norton SAve and Restore and NIS 2008 both on that computer in case that's a clue.

Hi,

Just wondering... are the following services set as:

  • Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler service - "Disabled"
  • LiveUpdate service - "Manual"
  • LiveUpdate Notice - "Automatic"

Automatic Liveupdate is enabled and Notify when updates are available is disabled. I should have thought this would have been a totally autamatic transparent service apart from major security updates that need a reboot to load. (It used to be.)

Re: Updates available message every time on startup in Vista

Hi,

Thanks for getting back.  The one you mentioned are the settings of LU and we have the same settings :)

How about the services (type services.msc in Start>Run in Windows)

Next locate the 3 services of LiveUpdate:

1.   Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler

2.  LiveUpdate service

3.  LiveUpdate Notice

You will see the startup type of those services.

On my system it is:

1.   Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Automatic Delayed

2.  LiveUpdate service - Manual

3.  LiveUpdate Notice - Automatic

The only startup item I have here is ccApp.exe.  There's no startup item for LU.  You might want to disable it using MSCONFIG>Startup tab so it will NOT show again.  This is work-around only though.

Re: Updates available message every time on startup in Vista

My settings are the same as yours for the first part. In MSCONFIG I have disabled LU in startuo and I will see how that goes.

It seems strange that if I take the 1st option on startup I get the 2007 style Update boxes but if I go from the Protection Centre screen I get the much simplified 2008 box!

Many Thanks

Re: Updates available message every time on startup in Vista

Good luck and I hope that will do it but if ever it will re-appear, you are going to have 2 entries of LiveUpdate in your startup items.  What I can suggest only if that happends is any of the following:

Method 1:

  • Delete the startup item for LU using the registry editor (please back the registry using ERUNT just in case you will modify/delete the wrong one) or use 3rd party application that can manage startup entries e.g. Spybot S&D, WinPatrol etc. See if that will solve the issue and will not re-occur.

Method 2:

  • Use Method 1.  Do not reboot.
  • Re-install LiveUpdate and configure it the way you like.  Ensure that "Notify you..." is not checked in NIS>Liveupdate.
