Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

Hi Tdraym,

Couple of questions:

  •   from your labels you show Local and Online Vault - which type of vault are you talking about?
  • The statement you mentioned: " tells me if I have vault it will be deleted"  sounds like the verbiage used with a Local Vault and creating an Online vault to replace the Local Vault. What type of vault are you trying to create?
  • Which type of vault s do you have on other PC's - Local or Online?
  • What is the Operating System of the PC that is having the problem?
  • What is the Norton program you are using and the version (from main page of Norton > Help > About.

Once we get additional info we'll be able to assist you better.

Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

I have a local and an online vault, I'm not trying to create anything new,  just trying to access vault from Norton toolbar. This is on my Windows 8.1 PC, Norton Security ver. 22.9.3.13, also have Norton Identity Safe installed,  use to be able to open vault by clicking on access Vault from toolbar and just entering Vault password and hitting enter, same vaults on all PCs, Sign on to website could access vault. highlite identity from program and open Identity safe to access logons, hope you understand let me know Thanks.

Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

How about a few more questions so I can try to figure out exactly what you have going on.

  • Go to Control Panel > Programs & Features and see if it Shows both Norton Security with Backup and Norton Identity Safe as separate installed programs.  Yes or No?
  • What is your default browser?
  • Within your default browser - go to the section that manages your browser extensions and tell us which extensions are present and if all are enabled.
  • In a normal setup you would only have 2 Norton Extensions (Norton Identity Safety and Norton Toolbar - both version 2015.9.2.6, file dated 03/05/2015
  • In a setup where you also have the Norton Identity Safe Stand Alone installed you will see 4 extensions, those mentioned above as well as Norton Identity Safe Toolbar and Norton Identity Protection (probably version 2014.7.11.42, file dated 5/11/2017)

Here is why I am asking for this information:

  •   I have both a Local Vault and an Online Vault on my WIN 10 running Norton Security with Backup and I only have one set of extensions (2 extensions) shown as in the normal setup I mentioned above.
  •   On my Win 7 system running Comcast provided Norton Security Suite (which only has a Local Vault as part of it's program), but I also have the Stand Alone Identity Safe Installed to provide access to an Online Vault and that system shows 2 sets of extension (a total of 4 extensions).

 From your last post:

"use to be able to open vault by clicking on access Vault from toolbar and just entering Vault password and hitting enter"

This would be true for the way to open your Local Vault (in other words, no username/password required) and also to open an Online Vault provided you were already logged into your Norton Account.

On your problem Win 8 system, open your Norton product and in the upper right hand corner does it show Signed in as: with your user name (email address)?  Or does it show just Sign In?  If just Sign In, click on it to sign into your Norton Account nd see if that helps any.  If it shows Signed in with your email address, sometimes signing out and then back in clears some glitches.

I'll be waiting to see what your responses are.

Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

Hello Yank, In programs and Features, Norton Security with backup ver.22.9.3.13 is all that is listed, using internet explorer , Norton Toolbar ,Enabled, 2015.9.2.6 File date 5/11/2017, Norton Identity Safety, Enabled, 2015.9.2.6 File date 5/11/2017 , in my show hidden icons on toolbar it shows Norton Identity Safe icon, but trying to open from there doesn't work Don't need to use from there, just when on web, on Norton program page shows as signed in, I have logged out and in many times to make sure to make sure live update was up to par and account was active with no glitches , even to check backups, Thanks for your help Tdraym

Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

Hi Tdraym,

Thanks for hanging in there with me - I know I've asked a lot of questions and I appreciate you answering them.

Just reread your initial post - you asked:

"can't lose over 100  IDs and passwords so what do I do even if I put current password in will it delete all on all PCs and ID website"

  • Do you have a Local Account on the other PC's?
  • Do you use the same Norton Account for the Online Vaults on the other PC's?
  • Bottom line - is there only one Norton Account involved and only one Online Vault
  • Is the identical vault info on the other PC's?
  • Look in C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Norton Identity Safe Backups\email address used for Norton Account and see if there are any backups of your Online Identity Safe entries.  If so even if you lose your ID's and Passwords, you be able to use the backup to Import your entries into a new vault.

It may be time to go ahead and try to create a new vault and see where it takes you.

Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

Hi Yank

Do you have a Local Account on the other PC's?  I guess I'm lost or not really knowing what a local account is. When I open Norton program and go to Identity and click on Identity Safe  it would open vault without a password , So I consider that a local vault since I was signed into my program, just like signing into Windows or other programs. Because when I was opening vault from toolbar (internet explorer) I had to use a different password, different than program password, and was on internet so that was my online vault, both different formats or display.

Do you use the same Norton Account for the Online Vaults on the other PC's?  Yes, all had the same program, Vault, and passwords.

Look in C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Norton Identity Safe Backups\email   Ok will try to find and hopefully will work.

Now what I need to know is how do I setup a local Vault so I can at least look up ,Back up and save on flash drive, if in case this happens in the future, I have a copy of about 3/4 of the sign ins on an MS office file but to hard to go through for older stuff, Norton made it to easy with ID safe, So if there's a link I can use to set something up, Please tell me  Thanks again for your time, talk to you later ,Tdraym

Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

First of all, my sincerest apology, I said Local Account and actually meant Local Vault.  There is a difference between a Local and an Online Vault, besides the obvious that one is stored on your system and the other is stored in the cloud.

Let me pass on some general information and hopefully clear up somethings.

A Local Vault has a one password log in, but can also be started automatically whenever you open Windows.  If you select the three dots on the Norton Toolbar > then select Open Identity Safe Settings > go to the Security Tab and see the option to Automatically open my Vault when Windows starts, then you have a Local Vault.  If that does not appear, then you have a Cloud (Online) Vault. Please note you must be signed into your Vault in order to see the Settings.

Also if you have both a Local and a Cloud Vault you will see the following when signing into the Local Vault.  If you have both and try to sign into the Cloud Vault the Open Cloud Vault option will be replaced by Open Local Vault.

Now a Cloud Vault requires you to first be signed into your Norton Account (email user name and password) prior to being able to sign into your Cloud Vault by entering the Cloud Vault's password.  The Cloud Vault is tied to your Norton Account, while a Local Vault is tied to a specific Windows User Account.  Thus if you had 3 users when using a Local Vault, each user would have their own windows user account associated with their Local Vault, while in the case of a Cloud Vault, each user would have to have a separate Norton Account (email and password) in order to have their log-ins separate from each other.

In your case, I believe you do NOT have a Local Vault, but in fact have one Cloud Vault and it is being used on all three systems (if the WIN 8 problem system had ID Safe running).  Thus most of the info I supplied really does not matter to you, but can tell you for sure if you have a Local Vault or not.

In regards to the way you have been opening ID Safe (which you call Local).  If you select the Identity Square > Identity Safe and either your Settings Page or your Logins page appears, it is because you are signed into your Norton Account (upper right of main page of Norton Product) and you have the Cloud Vault already opened.  If you do not have the Cloud Vault opened (but are signed in on main page), you will receive a login request (similar to the second image above).  You would enter your Vault password and be logged in.

Now Selecting Vault is Closed on the Norton Toolbar will produce the same image requesting your Cloud Vault password (provided you are already logged into you Norton Account).

You do not need a Local Vault to "at least look up ,Back up and save on flash drive".  All of that can be done with what you have. In addition to being capable of doing an automatic backup of your ID Safe Data, you can also do manual Exports (or Imports if needed). Please ignore the blue for a second.  You can select to Export manually in either a Identity Safe Backup Format (DAT) (encrypted) format or in the less secure Plain Text (CSV) format.  The CSV format is readable using a text editor - such as notepad.  After selectin the format, select Export, then you will be able to select where you want to backup to.  If a flash drive, have it installed prior to selecting Export, so it will pick it up as an option.

I need to go run some errands, so I'll post this info now and ask you to have a look at the following link and see if it may also clear up some of your questions:

Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

Thank you, Yank, for all this information!  I ended up searching through the forums because I have the same problem.  I was able to access the vault on my phone, tablet, and netbook, but not on our desktop computer.  A few days ago it just quit working, it would prompt me to sign in, then said I did not have a vault, and needed to create a new password.  But it gave a warning that if I created a new password and already had a vault, my old vault would be deleted.  I backed up the DAT file from my netbook, but the desktop would not give me the option to import the file.  When I clicked on settings, there was not an import tab, the only tab available was general.  I figured since I had the backed up file, I would go ahead and try creating a new password.  But in hopes that everything would work the way it used to, I used the exact same password as I had been using.  At that point it opened an empty vault, and then I was able to import all of my information from the DAT file.  However, I was no longer able to see any of my saved login information on my other three devices, only the one on the desktop.  When I opened Identity Safe on my phone, the vault was empty.  I started manually importing logins (I have around 120, so this would take a while), but then noticed on my vault on the desktop, the ones I manually loaded were now showing up as duplicates. So somehow the vaults had to be connected, but for some reason I could only see the logins on the desktop.  Then I got the idea to try to import the DAT file onto my netbook again.  I did that, and now all of my logins show up in all of my devices!  Yay!  However, in Identity Safe on my desktop, there are now two of every login.  That's ok, I can live with that.  I'm assuming it has a local file and a cloud file, and that's why I'm seeing double of everything.  I don't know how to delete the local file, and I'm considering just leaving it the way it is, so I don't accidentally delete the wrong one.  But I just wanted to post my experience here, in case it helps anyone else.  :-)

Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

Hi Yank,  I guess I don't have a local vault,  when clicking on 3 dots on Norton toolbar it does not give me the option, to Automatically open my Vault when Windows starts, But I was able to import Vault from 'Enable automatic backups' which was about 2 weeks old, I created a new strong password with my old 'current that was working on other 2 PCs' password and it let me. So I have access to all logons from all 3 pcs "great"  thanks ago,  Now I was searching Norton and community to find " set up a local vault " and didn't find " set up ' just questions or support topics Like "How to bring Local Vault back or when will Norton" most older dates 2012s. So still in question If I can, But since you showed me  I see where I can find backups stored locally ,mine is enabled Hopefully won't need to use it again But for now I guess my problem is solved and will Mark as Solution, Thanks again Please stay on top Norton's issues, I see you have helped  many others, Have a good day,       Grateful, Tdraym

Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

You are most welcome Tdraym and if you look though the following long thread, you will see how the Local Vault can be regained - if you had one in the past.  It is a fairly long procedure and the instructions must be followed exactly or it will not work.

Thanks for the feedback notgoodwithcomputers.

Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

Welp it happened to me as well.  15 years of Passwords GONE in one fell swoop.  No way to get them back.  Norton has been a complete fail for me.  Now I gotta spend the whole day (or longer!)  jumping through hoops to change all my passwords.  It FORCED me to create a new master password and that was that - all gone.

The Anti-Cloud

Did you use an online vault? If so, did you check for the automatic backups on your system as noted in the posts above? If you have the backups, you can just import your backup and you lose nothing.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Create Vault password, will delate any old vaults

Thank you Peter.  I was able to revert back from a backup but the 'sync' feature wiped out my online vault before I could log in.  I am still not happy to stop everything I am doing to hunt down a fix - especially since I never had one issue with the vault process until they rolled out the cloud based option.  I will be following the advice to make my own backups on my own machine from now on.
