Cannot download security de luxe to xp machine

I purchased a new copy of Norton De Luxe security to 5 machines to replace last year's copy. My XP machine showed the previous copy to be a trial version (it was not) and I could not get this machine to accept the new software. So I deleted the machine from my account to start again. Same result! I gave the problem to the help desk. After 90 minutes on my machine they had to give up - still no result, and this despite this machine running Norton for years! What's going on? The machine is not important and is used only for music but I do want it protected. The help desk seemed to think my machine would not download anything but I doubt this to be true. What could be stopping the download succeeding. I'm baffled!!

Re: Cannot download security de luxe to xp machine

Some old information which may be causing your problem:

Norton 22 will not install on a computer with an older microprocessor that does not support SSE2 (Streaming SIMD Extensions 2). SSE2 is one of the Intel SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) processor supplementary instruction sets first introduced by Intel with the initial version of the Pentium 4 in 2001. The CPUs that power most of today’s PCs were enhanced to add support for a new instruction set that enabled more powerful and efficient software operation called Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (or simply abbreviated to SSE2), it was one of many new instruction sets added over the last ten or more years. We recently discovered a change in the default behavior of the third party software tools (called compilers) that we use to build our products. This change means that new versions of our software are no longer compatible with machines that lack support for the SSE2 CPU instruction. If your computer is less than 10 years old, it is most likely that it supports SSE2. To identify whether the CPU supports the feature in question, do the following:

1. Download Coreinfo from http://download.sysinternals.com/files/Coreinfo.zip and save the file on to your desktop.

2. Extract the zip file to your preferred location.

3. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box.

4. Type "cmd" and then press Enter.

5. Navigate to the location where you extracted the files in step 2, then drag and drop coreinfo.exe to the command prompt.

6. Press Enter.

Re: Cannot download security de luxe to xp machine

Looks like I have not got SSE2 CPU. My machine tells me that the Norton product has been downloaded but it seems that I cannot see it anywhere. Therefore I assume it is not going to work on my machine as my machine is too old. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Your instructions were excellent.

Re: Cannot download security de luxe to xp machine

If you still have the older version installed, you can use the product key you just purchased to renew your current product.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Cannot download security de luxe to xp machine

The older and expired version of Norton has been removed and the new version does not load successfully though I get a message to say that it has. It just cannot be seen on the machine, just a new folder in the programme files but nothing in the folder. I'm assuming that it does not work with my older machine. Thanks for your response.

Hi blackmoor2:

The support article Message: "An unsupported processor has been detected. This version of the product requires a processor that supports the SSE2 instruction set…" used to have links to offline installers for the older v21 of NIS, NAV, N360 and N360 Premium that still run on older Win XP SP3 machines that don't have SSE2-compatible processors, but it look like Norton removed the download links from that support article.  If the CPU of your computer does not support the SSE2 instruction set you can download and launch newer v22 installers but the installation will abort and display the error message in this support article.

If you purchased a 5-device product key for Norton Security (NS) Deluxe we can provide a download link to the offline installer for Norton Internet Security v21 (NS Deluxe product keys can be used to activate old v21 NAV and NIS products) but one question first.

You said in your original post that you are trying to renew NS Deluxe.  Are you certain that your CPU does not support SSE2, because it would be impossible for you to have installed NS Deluxe v22 on your computer last year (note: the latest Norton Security product line does not have older v21 installers) without SSE2 support.

EDIT:

Piriform's free Speccy utility (http://www.piriform.com/speccy) will also show you if your CPU supports SSE2.

Re: Cannot download security de luxe to xp machine

You could try contacting Support to see if they can give you a link to the older installer. If worst comes to worst and they cannot provide a link, and your CPU does not support SSE2, you can ask them for a refund for the product you cannot use.

Hi peterweb:

Generic links to offline installers for the older v21 Norton products have the word "old" (v21) instead of "latest" (v22) in the URL.  For example, v21 English (EN) installers are available at:
     NAV v21:  https://www.norton.com/oldnav
     NIS v21:    https://www.norton.com/oldnis
     N360 v21: https://www.norton.com/oldn360
     N360 Premium v21: https://www.norton.com/oldn360p

My concern is that Norton v21 products have not been patched for the critical vulnerabilities described in the June 2016 security advisory SYM16-010.  The Norton v21 products can be installed on old Win XP SP3 machines with CPUs that do not support the SSE2 instructions set (users must disable Settings | Administrative Settings | Automatic Download of New Version before running a LiveUpdate to prevent an upgrade to v22), but if blackmoor2's Win XP SP3 machine actually supports SSE2 then downgrading to an insecure v21 product would not be not advisable.

If blackmoor2 determines that their CPU will support SSE2 then a quick clean up of their old installation with the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool in "Remove Only" mode as instructed at https://www.norton.com/nrt, followed by a reinstall of the latest v22 Norton Security Deluxe (https://www.norton.com/latestns) might fix their problem.

I understand that concern, and share it with you. But then again, if a user is using an OS unsupported by the manufacturer, they have to accept any risk from their decision.

Hi blackmoor2:

One other thought.  What is your default browser, and have you ever had problems downloading other files beside your Norton Security Deluxe installer with your current browser?

The only major browser that is fully supported on Win XP SP3 and Vista SP2 is Mozilla's Firefox ESR (extended support release) v52.x and Mozilla announced in the blog entry Update on Firefox support for Windows XP and Vista that Firefox ESR v52.x will continue to receive security updates on these older platforms until June 2018.

The previous Firefox ESR v45 will still run on Win XP computers with older CPU that do not support SSE2 but the latest Firefox ESR v52 requires a SSE2-compatible CPU - see the Mozilla support article Your Hardware is No Longer Supported. If you can install Firefox ESR v52.5.2 on your Win XP computer that implies that your CPU supports the SSE2 instruction set.
