Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

I was updated on March 1 to Norton Security Suite (Comcast) 22.12.1.14. Now settings to activate Firewall, Intrusion Prevention, Browser Protection etc, located in Security Tab>Advanced no longer stay activated after my computer is restarted. Same applies within "Settings" tab itself. I've had Comcast uninstall-reinstall it 3 times with the same issues re-occurring. I'm running a 9 month old Windows 10 machine. I've had no problems with the past 3 updates. Help please!

Our Comcast guru @yank should be able to talk you through a reinstall.

The 22.12.1.14 version has been pulled from the Update servers because of some different problems.

Thanks Peterweb. I sent Yank a message. I have re-installed Norton, and updated it to 22.12.0.104, which is the update right before 22.12.1.14. Now I just won't touch Live Update for a bit.

Hi Bruce,

The following is a link I have authored on the Comcast  Forums for a uninstall/reinstall when problems are encountered with the current installation of Comcast NSS.

http://forums.xfinity.com/t5/Internet-Archive/How-To-Uninstall-Reinstall...

I'm hopeful that "Comcast" did it as the above link provides. You referred to "Comcast" are you saying Comcast Support or do you in fact mean Norton Support?

Also please verify you are using a Windows User Account with admin privileges when changing settings within Norton, and also double check to verify Fast Start in WIN 10 is disabled.

I am running NSS on a WIN 7 system and the retail version of Norton Security Premium on a WIN 10 system and have not encountered the situation you describe.

I'll be awaiting your responses.

<EDIT> Bruce just noticed your latest post - does everything work as it is supposed to now?

You will be OK for a little while. The latest update has been pulled from the Update servers, so you won't get the newer version for a while anyway.

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

Hi Peterweb and Yank. Thanks so much for trying to help me. As I stated earlier, my Windows 10 computer is about 8 months old and I've had no issues with Comcast's/Norton Security Suite, 'until' update 22.12.1.14.

The reason it is working just fine 'now' is because I only installed the three previous updates leading up to 22.12.1.14. The issues about that update are in my original post. The reason for my post was to see if anyone else might have encountered the same problem with that patch, or had any idea why I am.

To answer a couple of questions ....

Yank, I probably called a dedicated line to Symantec for Comcast Customers. After reading through the links you were kind enough to send me, all 3 Norton reps (and then myself) uninstalled, then re-installed Norton in that manner, though we did 'not' do the first step by going through the control panel to remove the product first, before using the removal tool. So yes, I'm fine at the moment, that is until I encounter 22.12.1.14 which Peterweb mentioned was removed for other reasons, which I believe I read were related to task scheduling issues that it whacked out.

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

Hi Peterweb and Yank. I have an update. I figured out what the problem was. The latest version of Norton .14 (now .15 as of today ..... last two digits) was somehow being whacked out by a faulty cumulative patch that was installed into my computer through windows update. Yet the Windows update didn't cause any troubles with previous versions of Norton. I figured this out by uninstalling the Windows Update. Now the problem is, I can't stop it in Windows 10 from re-installing itself. Thank You Microsoft!

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

Thanks so much Peterweb for the Windows update info. I will give it a try. Meanwhile, the latest Norton update still doesn't work. After the second reboot, all all the administrative settings are now greyed out and are in the 'off' position, so essentially I have no protection. I Googled this problem and no-one else seems to have it. I'm beginning to think I will have to do a clean install of Windows 10 pro. Whoopee!!!

Thing is, I never received any re-install media when I bought this computer from HP, so I'm not sure how to obtain it. Might you have any ideas about that? I read a while ago about obtaining an ISO file somewhere and using THAT. This method is new to me. I've always used DVD's to do clean installs of operating systems.

Is there a green check mark in your system tray? If so, your Norton is fully protecting you, you just cannot access the settings.

To access Settings you need to logged into Windows with an admin account. If that is not the issue, try another couple of LiveUpdates and system restarts to ensure you have Norton fully updated.

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

Hi Peterweb and Yank. The problem was specifically related to my computer. Last July when HP re-installed my Win 10 operating system, they went into MSCONFIG and unchecked a bunch of services, so they wouldn't start with Windows. Doing this has had no ill effects that I've noticed until the 4th Norton patch 22.12.1.14/15. Apparently this update requires one of the Intel related services that was stopped, though I don't know which one. Now that I enabled all of them to start with Windows, Norton seems to be just fine. Now that I just said that, I probably jinxed everything LOL.
Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

I'll definitely let you know. I believe today is the third day and all is good. It's kind of funny because I was in bed thinking ..... maybe some program or service that's running in the background is whacking out this latest patch. Turns out it was just the opposite. The patch required something that HP deliberately stopped, that it apparently needed. Have a great weekend Peterweb, and please wish me luck!

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

Bruce, way to go!  Please let us know specific programs and/or service(s) need to be enabled.  I prefer not to just enable all as I know that on my system some cause other problems.

Thanks again,

BTW Bruce, Yank, and Peter - I have the original HP Win7 recovery DVDs  (HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC) if you need any original files, drivers, etc.

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

Hi KC. As you read above, I'm running Windows 10 Pro with an Intel Quad Core chip set. (Specs Attached).  Within the Microsoft Configuration Utility (MSCONFIG) I enabled all the services dealing with Intel at one time, so I'm not sure if it was just one service, or all of them that required to start up with Windows. My computer takes two seconds longer to boot than it did before I enabled all those services, so I didn't really bother to try to figure out which particular one OR two were the specific ones needed. (Also attached)

Thanks for letting us know, about your Windows 7 recovery DVD's. They just might come in handy one day. As far as I'm concerned, I much prefer Win 7 over Win 10.

What kind of problem with Norton are you having, and please let us know if what I did, helped solve your problem. Cheers!

**Please note that I just learned I can't upload the .jpg files I snipped for you. This emailing system won't support it ;(

How many solutions do you have to come up with to become a 'Guru'? I see you have 765. That's very impressive. I should live that long LOL. Is it possible that you can only upload one image at a time?
Anyway for KC. I'll upload the second image. I assume he knows that every Windows Operating System is different, even regarding the services in MSCONFIG. But to repeat myself, I enabled everything that Microsoft had in there, and re-enabled all the Intel services as well. Here it is roughly a week later, and I don't have any problems with the latest patch. What problems the NEXT patch might bring, I shudder to think about.

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

There is no known limit. I have posted 4 or 5 images in a post.

Although all systems are different, many systems do use Intel hardware, and the information might help others that may run into this.

Still no image in your last post. Maybe try getting another screenshot and then try posting that.

And just FYI. A guru status is not a numbers game. If the forum admins see someone posting knowledgeable and useful information over a period of time, they may offer the user a guruship.

Hey Peterweb. Thanks for the info regarding how one can become a guru. I also read through Krusty and Floplot's comments. Welcome! Let's have a party.

OK, I'll try posting a new print screen I took of my Microsoft Configuration Utility, regarding the previously unchecked Intel services, which were the culprit for my troubles with the latest version of  Norton Security Suite. 22.12.1.15. If this doesn't work, I'll claim defeat...... I can now see the jpg.

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

None! All the others were set to start with Windows .... except two, which were for 2 programs that I installed. One is Malwarebytes, and the other is for an audio mixing program called Mixmeister,  which I still left unchecked since they obviously didn't cause the problem, and don't need to start with Windows.

Regarding my successful upload, I didn't do anything different than I previously did Peterweb. Go figure!

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

I have this problem and spent many minutes with three different support reps yesterday. I removed, reinstalled via the tool. When the install was finished I checked settings and found SMART FIREWALL  was on VOILA! (I thought) the problem is fixed. Then along came a popup from Norton ... this patch needs to be installed .. you can do it now or it will occur later Automatically! Well, can't fight city hall can ya?

I allowed the patch to install and I'm right back in the same situation. SMART FIREWALL is off and all switches are grey ... can't turn it on.

Support #3 once again wanted to take control of my computer to resolve the problem. Sorry Charlie, I've been in this computer world too many years to trust someone I don't know to jump on my computer and "safely" fix things. If you can't provide me the instructions to do the fix then you're obviously poking around in the dark -- not on my computer thank you.

BTW I'm running Windows 8.1 with the latest version of Firefox. IE has been removed. I also have a PC running Windows 7 - NO PROBLEM with SMART FIREWALL  on that computer. Hmmmmm!

bobr2k .... try going into MSCONFIG. Make a note of all 'disabled services' .... then re-enable all of them and do a re-boot. Hopefully that will do the trick. If so, then you can enable one service at a time, re-boot, etc, until you figure out which service this particular update(Patch) needs.

BTW, my wife runs Windows 7 (64 bit) as well. The Patch as in your case also installed with no problems at all.

Cheers Bruce

Have you restarted your computer a few times since getting that patch? Even though Norton may say no restart is required, in actual fact, often you have to do multiple restarts to get updates fully set up.

As you are running windows 8.1, you might want to try turning off the Fast Startup feature. If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

OK this gets weirder and weirder ... I DID NOT change any settings in MSCONFIG !

I had windows updates (also had some yesterday) .. when the updates concluded they required a restart. DONE!

Check Smart Firewall ... ON ... click question mark on blocked ports and protocol. Got a message YOU HAVE TURNED SMART FIREWALL OFF ... I brought Norton up and found everything greyed out again but a grey X in the smart firewall setting. Strange. Soon I got another warning and found the grey X is now gone.

Re: Having Trouble With Norton 22.12.1.14

This issue is now fixed with update to ver 22.14.0.54 (and reboot)

However it is -
Disgraceful that there was no apology.
Disgraceful that there was not even an acknowledgement of the issue.
Disgraceful that it took so long to fix.
Disgraceful that so many users were inconvenienced (to say the least).
Disgraceful that Symantec evidently wishes it to appear as if it hadn't happened.

They would have known that most users would not have even noticed the problem and would be blissfully unaware that they were unprotected. (This is even more ironic and tragic because this issue also applied to windows Corporate Editions as well.)

All in all, very shameful and cheap behaviour on behalf of Symantec.
But, just as with most other organisations today - they pretend and promise faithfully to give their customers the utmost security ... but in fact they don't give a flying fig.
It's a sign of the times.
If I was CEO of Symantec, to my shame, I would probably act just as utterly despicably.
That is what being 'professional' has become.
After all - we must protect our image and our shareholders mustn't we?
What a very sad society we live in.

My apologies to all.
This issue is NOT fixed after all.
One hour later and after several reboots to test - the symptoms are exactly as before.

(You'd think with a single update of over 100mb, something would have been fixed by now.)
