WIndows Update KB4090913 & NSBU

Cumulative Update KB4090913 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.251 - Mar. 5

I got this update on my Laptop but it is not being offered on my Desktop.

This reg key is missing on my Desktop so it looks like I will have to AGAIN re-install Norton. I have spend more time fixing these Norton update problems then actually doing anything else. Thanks Norton - NOT.

Both systems with NSBU 22.12.1.15.

Unhappy Camper.

UPDATE: Laptop was on 22.12.0.104.

I ran LU and it updated to 22.12.1.15 and didn't mess it up.

Still had problem with no Automatic LiveUpdate but hope this update will fix that.

Re: WIndows Update KB4090913 & NSBU

Jim both my AMD machines are still on 104 too. I'm NOT updating the AMD's until I know 22.12.1.15 is good to go. I DO have 22.12.1.15 on my Intel based laptop, the registry entry IS set and the current norton version appears to have cleaned up older folders on the system for previous versions. I also had to manually download KB4090913 last night. No issues with it. Try updating your laptop to the current version. On the PC I would do a remove and reboot. Reinstall from your account login so you will bypass other versions reappearing.

Re: WIndows Update KB4090913 & NSBU

I was hopping to get these 2 fixed as the Wife's was on 12.2.1.13 with the messed up Task Scheduler and no Automatic LiveUpdate. Just upgraded it to 12.2.1.15 and now has leftover Tasks from Norton.

I did get the Windows update as the reg was correct.

I may just uninstall Norton on all three right before MS releases the next  Windows 10 version 1803 which should be this Month and then wait for Norton to release a working product.

This has been a hell of a ride with all these Norton problems and it ain't over yet.

Indeed, OHOAR over the last 3 patches. Something has to give. This is happening with virtually ALL products across the spectrum. It would appear a company's "bottom line" is more important than making the products producing that revenue functional rather than one issue after another. For Christ sake, PM's aren't even replied to anymore.

Re: WIndows Update KB4090913 & NSBU

I used NR&R tool advanced option to un-install Norton. Then went to my Norton account and downloaded and install NSBU 22.12.0.104 and still the Reg key was missing. I used LiveUpdate to move to 22.12.1.15 and no Reg key. Windows update would not offer the KB update. I manually downloaded and install KB 4090913 and it updated just fine. When W10 1803 comes out I will be doing clean installs on my 3 systems and NORTON WILL NOT BE INSTALLED. I am done with this Norton crap.

Have you considered manually adding the registry entry? Just a though.

Re: WIndows Update KB4090913 & NSBU

I am thinking about it but not very comfortable with it. I contacted Norton Chat and they knew nothing about it but are referring it to someone else. According to MS the vendor adds the key as I see on my other systems.

I still have Automatic Update problems on my 2 other system which will probably entail 2 more NR&R's and hope they work. My last one showed as at Trial with 276 days left. A few reboots help but I just don't trust Norton installs anymore. Nothing seems to work right.

I'm getting tired of jumping through hoops to keep Norton working.

Update

I just checked for Windows updates on all my machines but only the machines running WD found and are downloading KB4090913.  So I checked the machine that I only installed Norton on last night and the registry key was missing.  It looks like installing Norton somehow removed that key as I've had no trouble updating Windows when that machine ran WD.

Just another reason to restore an image backup from before Norton was installed.

All my system now have NS 22.12.1.15 and Automatic LiveUpdate does not work on any of them.

But it's no biggie anymore I just run LU when I 1st login and now and then.

Makes me wonder if Norton is really worth the trouble.

I'm interested to see who has and who has not got the correct registry key on their system. Are you on NS 22.12.1.04, 22.12.1.14 or 22.12.1.15? And do you have Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10? Maybe we can find a common denominator?

Re: WIndows Update KB4090913 & NSBU

Three Windows 10 ver 1709 systems. NSBU 22.12.1.15 on all 3. I checked this morning and all 3 were missing the key. Norton Automatic LiveUpdate does not work on any of them so this is the same status I checked last night. I ran a manual Live Update on each. Now the key is there.  Maybe my chat call yesterday woke them up but I have not heard back.

MS shows this key is required for the past 5 Cumulative Updates starting on Jan 3. Here is the link to MS information on each update.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4090913/march5-2018kb4090913osbuild16299-251

This is the MS support update link (March 5, 2018—KB4090913 (OS Build 16299.251)) that within the "Known issues in this update" box, specifically states that this update will "affects some (unnamed) versions of antivirus software"

Symptom: Because of an issue that affects some versions of antivirus software, this fix applies only to computers on which the antivirus ISV updated the ALLOW REGKEY.

Workaround: Contact your antivirus manufacturer to verify that their software is compatible and that they have set the following REGKEY on the computer:
Key="HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"Subkey="SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat"
Value Name="cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc"
Type="REG_DWORD”

Re: WIndows Update KB4090913 & NSBU

I just installed Norton again and that Registry Key has been removed once more.  I've ran Live Update and there are no more updates available.

The Key was there yesterday before Windows Update installed KB4090913, so on my machine at least Norton deleted the key, or WD deleted the key when it was disabled.  Either way it is not there now.

As Norton would say--- do a reboot and run LU again.

Do you have Fast Start Up running?

Sorry, I could not help myself.

On my systems the key vanished yesterday and they were turned off for the night.

This morning after the 1st LU they all had the key.

So maybe a reboot is worth a try.

Without that key then Windows Update wont offer the next Cumulative Update which is due next Tuesday. However the update can be manually downloaded and installed. (It worked on mine without the key) WU did offer other updates with the key missing so I think it is only required for the Cumulative Updates.

Stuff it!  I'm fed up with Norton anyway.  I've tried Norton on that machine multiple times lately and Auto-Protect goes grey shortly after installation and can't be disabled.  The instructions I received for that issue were "Auto-Protect feature appears grayed out after Norton repairs a threat Can you please try this KB and update the status?"

This as expected did not solve that problem, and now this registry key bug...

I think you need that Registry key for any Security update from Microsoft. Windows 10 may be different though since I believe that the Cumulative Update does contain all the Security updates. Windows 7 is different in that respect.

Since 22.12 was released none of my systems can do an Automatic LiveUpdate.

They really screwed up with 22.12 release.

Norton needs to update the "Automatic Download of New Version" option so we could stay on an older "working" version until these bugs are fixed.

Two random thoughts:

Does this issue with the deleted QualityCompat registry key [Key="HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" Subkey="SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat" Value="cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc" Type="REG_DWORD” Data="0x00000000”] only occur on Win 10 Version 1709 machines?  If so, there was a servicing stack (KB4090914) for Win 10 Version 1709 released on the same day as KB4090913 - OS Build 16299.251 (see Servicing Stack Update for Windows 10 Version 1709: March 5, 2018) and I'm wondering if the absence / presence of the KB4090914 servicing stack has any role in this.

Also, does anyone know if there is a scheduled task in the Windows Task Scheduler that runs a check at boot-up to see if the QualityCompat registry key needs to be created by the antivirus ISV (Independent Software Vendor)?  Given all the recent issues with the buggy Norton v22.12.1.14 update and the Task Scheduler described in the thread Norton 22.12.1 Patch Wipes Out Scheduled Tasks, I'm wondering if the "new and improved" v22.12.1.15 update is still causing problems with scheduled tasks, particularly on systems that were originally updated to v22.12.1.14 and haven't been restored/rolled back far enough to re-create all the scheduled maintenance tasks (for Windows and/or Norton) that this buggy update wiped.

Krusty13:

HI Krusty13:

I have the following options checked in the Windows Explorer and System sections of CCleaner Portable v5.40.6411 (none of the Advanced options in the bottom section are enabled) and I've confirmed that CCleaner does not remove the required QualityCompat registry entry on my Vista SP2 machine.  Also note that I've never been updated from v22.12.0.104 to either 22.12.1.14 or 22.12.1.15 on this machine.  This Vista OS does not come with the full Windows Defender antivirus like Win 8.x or Win 10 but it does have the old-style anti-malware / anti-spyware version of Windows Defender.

MB Premium v3.3.1.2183 (CP v1.0.262) is currently installed but is not configured to load at boot-up (i.e., Settings | Protection | Startup Options | Start Malwarebytes at Windows startup is OFF) and for now I'm essentially using MB v3 as an on-demand scanner to run manual Threat Scans every 3 or 4 days.  That might change once I've updated to 3.4.4.2398-1.0.322 and run some tests to see if any of the glitches I'm currently seeing with MB Premium v3 (e.g., frequent mbamtray.exe APPCRASHes at boot-up so that MB icon fails to load in system tray; high failure rate for Norton Automatic LiveUpdates when MB Web Protection is enabled, etc.) are fixed.

Hi Krusty13:

I'm also not certain how a setting in the Windows Explorer section of the Disk Cleaner tool in CCleaner shown <here> could affect the deletion of a registry entry.  I use the Registry Cleaner in the free CCleaner on rare occasions and only when I'm absolutely certain the orphaned registry entry I'm removing is not required, and I've never seen my CCleaner Registry Cleaner flag the required QualityCompat registry entry for possible deletion on my Vista SP2 machine.

Every night I shutdown my systems and key is present. After booting the next morning the key is gone. It gets restored if I run LU but not all the time, mostly the 1st LU I run in the morning. I shutdown my systems after getting the key restored but again a simple shutdown and reboot and the key is gone. LU is not restoring the key now but will see what happens later today.

I am removing Norton from my Laptop and going with WD as a test as WD is suppose to set the key also.

UPDATE: Used NRnR remove only and rebooted. After WD was started the key is back. So WD does set the key. Now for some shutdown tests - update to follow.

Let's hope it will be fixed next Tuesday, when I will install the latest Cumulative Update.

" I install the key manually on with the .reg file mentioned above.

I abandoned WU since 14393 version, I'm finding it somewhat unreliable, sometimes it works ok sometimes it needs babysitting, each patch Tuesday I note the latest KB's for Flash Player, Cumulative update for Windows 10 and if needed some extra updates like Servicing Stack updates, then download and install manually from Microsoft Catalogue.

I never install Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool or WD updates as WD on all my W 10 systems is disabled.

Norton Security has also never touched my W 10 systems and probably never will, and everything is running smoothly.

I have NS installed on my W7 systems which I use mainly from browsing... I know it's a trade off but for the moment it suits me.
