Hello gronk49. Install Malwarebytes and do a full scan, in settings make sure you have enabled "check for rootkits". MBAM will detect other issues Norton doesn't concentrate on.

Please let us know you results so we can assist further if needed.

Cheers

I'm currently running Malwarebytes to see whether it sorts it out...

Looks like Wirral Royal has their solution in the other thread. Hoping to hear from gronk49 about whether MBAM solves their issue as well.

Re: Re appearing threats from Norton f_00023b

It was either Malwarebytes or the Chrome cleanup. I did both.

So, Iran the Malware software and canned but it found no viruses.  I then deleted chrome browser and all history and re-installed .  It appears, at leats for now that that has soplved the problem.  I will keep using rhe Malware software though.  Is there any advabtage to using the premium softare of Malware?

Re: Re appearing threats from Norton f_00023b

Keeping the free version is normally what we suggest gronk. Just use it "on demand" vice having it run real time at bootup. This prevents any overkill or conflicts with Norton when the system boots up. Glad to hear you are all clear as well.

Re: Re appearing threats from Norton f_00023b

After two attempts by Norton chat (and via LogMeIn) each taking an hour, (the first hour included Norton forensic scan) and trying this and trying that and deleting this and deleting that the problem persisted, this solved the problem -

https://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-trojan-gen-npe-2/

And didn't even have to go past step 1.  The free trial scan found 64 issues, quarantined the 64 and no problem since.

Tired of Norton "experts" saying they know how to fix and it and taking the time and not getting it either the 1st or the 2nd.  Indicated to 2nd that if they didn't get it this time, I would insist on 1-year free Norton.  Now I have to try and collect.

Re: Re appearing threats from Norton f_00023b

It looks like you may have picked up a PUP, a Possibly Unwanted Program. While they are annoying, they do not cause damage to your system. Some people actually want the 'Features' offered by these programs. They are usually downloaded alongside a legitimate download when you do not uncheck the option for the additional download.

Norton products concentrate on malware that can damage your system, that is why some PUPs are not detected.

Malwarebytes does concentrate more on PUPs.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Re appearing threats from Norton f_00023b

peterweb,
Thanks for your highly likely explanation.  If only Norton stated it that way.  And while I checked the Malwarebyte report and the 64 were mainly PUP, the bottom line is Norton WAS picking them up and annoyingly frequently (almost every web page delivered).  And while I could have just turned off the reporting with the chance that subsequent actually dangerous, it remains that TWO different NORTON staff couldn't enunciate as clearly as you did.
Simple point - Malwarebytes stopped it. Norton did not.
Thanks again for your clear explanation.
Still need to collect my free year from Norton
