How to Check if VPN is working

Confused/Lost : Just upload Norton 360 deluxe for my MAC and I can not find any indication that the VPN is activated. On my iPad there is a small icon that appears aside of the wifi symbol. Any suggestions greatly appreciated, on checking if the VPN is active. Thanks Don
