Antivirus product update messes my Windows drive.

I have been using Norton Antivirus on my computers for years without it corrupting my C: drive up until now. I am using Windows 7 because i use a lot of software that works best on this OS. If i let Norton install the latest product update, the computer will no longer boot. It corrupts system files and the only way i can get my computer to boot up again is to restore the drive with an earlier backup i created. Is anyone else having this issue??

Assuming you have already have Win 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed (see the ComputerOfHope article <here> if you aren't sure), it's possible that both KB4490628 (Servicing Stack Update for Win 7 SP1, rel. 12-Mar-2019) and KB4474419 (SHA-2 Code Signing Support for Windows 7, rel. 23-Sep-2019) must be installed on your system before updates that have a SHA-2 signed digital certificate like Norton v22.21.3 or newer will install correctly.  My post includes a link to AdvancedSetup's 05-Jun-2021 instructions in the Malwarebytes forum at Now MBAM Wants a Microsoft Security Update  that has download links for 32-bit and 64-bit .msu installers for both KB4490628 and KB4474419 .

Just download the required .msu standalone installer(s) to your desktop and double-click to run.  If the patch is already installed on your computer or you download an installer that does not match the bit architecture of your OS (e.g., you try to run a 64-bit .msu installer on a 32-bit Win 7 machine) you will see a "The update is not applicable to your computer" error - see the MS support article Windows Update Troubleshooting for other common causes of this error.

If you aren't sure if KB4474419 is already installed, search your installed updates at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features | View Installed Updates.  Search for the complete string "KB4474419" (without the quote marks) and not a partial string like "4474419".

Yes, I have this issue. The Norton update requires a Microsoft security update KB4474419 that I can't install. This is related to Microsoft ending support for Windows 7 in January 2020.

Thanks for your reply. You can download the file here https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4474419 I have downloaded it already and will try it out once i clone my hard drive in case it does not work.

I installed the windows update and was able to update Norton antivirus to the latest product update without any issues. Thanks for your help.
