Windows Mail app fails on Comcast email with VPN turned on.

Hi,

I use the Windows Mail app to monitor all email accounts at once. When the VPN is turned on, the mail app fails to receive email for the Comcast.net account. All the mail app says is, "check your settings". Outlook & Gmail have no issues. Occasionally, even with the VPN on, Comcast mail does still make its way through. Why is that I wonder?

I understand the email provider is just protecting my account from a masked IP address, but I am hoping there is a workaround. Found information regarding different port assignments for IMAP settings to bypass the VPN block. For instance, local port box 443 or 80. Perhaps I am not on the right path. Also found threads regarding Split Tunnel Features, sounds complicated, which Norton may not support yet.

Windows 10 Pro

Thanks for any assistance.

Split tunnel is your best try for this problem. It is not complicated at all.

Just go the VPN settings and then split tunnel and add the Windows Mail program.

Re: Windows Mail app fails on Comcast email with VPN turned on.

Hi xjoex,

Your right that was simple, thank you. I just put Norton on the PC this weekend, mostly for the VPN. First experience with a VPN

Now I have another issue. When I try to Add the Mail app to the App Excluded list the OK button does not highlight or won't let me select it. Windows Mail is apparently built into Windows 10 & has no .exe program. Do I need to navigate to the C:\Program Files\WindowsApps folder to add it? If so, I will need to give myself permission to access to that folder, right now it is owned by the system. I can do that; it just seems a bit extreme to add an exclusion to the VPN.

Thank you

You need to go to C:\Program files, or C:\Program files(x86) to look for the .exe file for your mail app.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Mail

Re: Windows Mail app fails on Comcast email with VPN turned on.

Hi guys,

Task Manager says the location for the Mail app is C:\Program Files\WindowsApps.

I did try excluding the contents of C:\Program Files\Windows Mail, both 32 & 64-bit, it did not help.  The only executables in those folders are for the Windows Address Book.

Believe I must take ownership of C:\Program Files\WindowsApps, then try to exclude the Mail app. Will report back.

Thanks

Re: Windows Mail app fails on Comcast email with VPN turned on.

Turns out, the Two-Factor-Authentication I placed on the Comcast account was the culprit. I removed 2FA at Comcast & all is well. Of course, no need for the split tunnel now. Guess I've gone a bit overboard with the 2FA business

I have a better understanding of VPNs & Split Tunells now.

Thank you for everyone's assistance.

Ahh!! I had considered that as a possibility. Glad you have it all squared away.
