PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

THANK YOU for reading this post/thread! ;o)

So, I AM an 81 year old Guy (Senior Citizen)...essentially an Analog Guy living in the Digital Age (often times overwhelmed by IT).

Recently I had malware on my HP laptop (which has been acting strange ever since) and thus have NOT trusted my laptop to be secure. That means that I have NOT signed-in to my e-mail account or done online banking.   ;o(

I can only hold out for so long!

So, a replacement, for my HP laptop, was necessary.

I, alas, live in a city of 25,000 people and there are only 2 places where you can buy a computer the Walmart Superstore and Staples (and yes, I know there are more options online). Staples had no sales whatsoever, hence their laptops were too expensive for me. The Walmart Superstore had an Acer Chromebook 315, 15.6" HD, Intel Celeron N4000, 4GB LPDDR4, Pure Silver, Chrome OS, CB315-3H-C19A for $179.90 (ergo the price was right!).

When I asked the Walmart associates in the electronics department detailed questions regarding the Acer Chromebook 315...the answer was "We don't know!" ("Really?")

Online for sale price $149.00, hence I bought the Acer online and it was shipped to me.

So, that having been said, is Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe? MBAM?

What should I know about Chrome OS?

I AM an Old Guy luddite who is overwhelmed by IT issues these days, hence I would TRULY appreciate input on the Acer Chromebook and Chrome OS.

I THANK YOU in advance for ALL of your help and advice Good People! :o)

SoulAsylum,

Well, for starters, THANK YOU ever SO MUCH for responding! ;o)

I, sadly, have been under a LOT of pressure lately. First, the anniversary of my German Wife's death (the woman was a SAINT - we were married for almost 50 years) which has left me melancholic. My health (myriad of health issues) hospital bills - doctor bills (health insurance premiums). Other bills/expenditures (forcing me to do some belt tightening...set money aside for a nursing home/some day).

So, the malware on my laptop, while in Administrator mode, has rattled my cage. I got the green dot plus white checkmark, from Norton, next to the google hyperlink, hence I clicked on said hyperlink (movies for sale). I bookmarked the webpage and then I spent more than an hour browsing said webpage...and then suddenly Norton RED ALERT "This is a malicious website we highly recommend you do not visit this website!

Are you kidding me? Norton or MBAM were supposed to warn me before/NOT after the fact. I have Norton Security Deluxe (BEST BUY/GeekSquad were supposed to install Norton 360) and MBAM Premium as AV software on my HP laptop. I deleted the bookmark (malicious website) from my google browser, closed the website, and THEY left a souvenir behind (malicious advertisement) after I had already closed said website. While, alas, in Administrator Mode! ;o(

It was just one aggravation to many!

I ran a Norton Quick Scan/Full Scan/Smart Scan = 0 infections. I ran MBAM = 0 infections. I ran Norton Power Eraser/restarted the HP laptop and then I ran (all of the above) scans over and over again = 0 infections, yet my laptop has been acting strangely ever since! ;o(

I avoided signing-in to my e-mail account (and ALL the other important online websites that require a password), as well as online banking, for as long as possible, yet there comes that breaking point where I could no longer hold out, hence the impulsive purchase of the Acer Chromebook 315 (the price was right). Did I put the cart in front of the horse? Absolutely, yet I had no choice.

THANK YOU ever SO MUCH for providing me with Chrome OS (info) hyperlinks! ;o)

I shall be sure to follow up on the information!

"Many apologies for not mentioning Malwarebytes. You can get it in the Google app store here"

No need for any apology whatsoever...I'm just glad someone (knowledgeable) responded to my thread/post. ;o)

I should have clarified that I already have MBAM Premium/Norton Security Deluxe installed on my HP laptop (I renewed the MBAM Premium subscription in June 2022 - Norton Security Deluxe in July 2022). Both are transferable (4 devices left over - out of a maximum of 5 devices), hence this post.

Once again...THANY YOU ever so much (from a retired Army Guy - to a retired NAVY Guy)! ;o)

"Good tidings to YOU!" "And HAPPY THANKSGIVING!" (you have made my day)

Hello David. Norton is NOT compatible with the Chrome OS. It is a highly tailored OS and more secure as such.

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

Hi David,

This 97 year old Veteran has been doing support here on the Norton Forums since they were reorganized back in 2008!  And before that I did online support as a volunteer (as all the "gurus" are) for Lotus, HP printers and IBM back in the days when they made the best laptops <g>. I didn't chip in here sooner since I knew that the others actually knew what they were sharing about while these days I regard myself rather more as a janitor sweeping up .....

First, the anniversary of my German Wife's death (the woman was a SAINT - we were married for almost 50 years) which has left me melancholic. My health (myriad of health issues) hospital bills - doctor bills (health insurance premiums). Other bills/expenditures (forcing me to do some belt tightening...set money aside for a nursing home/some day)

My condolences which I share since my wife died a few months ago after a long time in Long Term Care following an accident which caused brain damage and after-effects to develop slowly. I hope you both had the wonderful support that Hospice gave to us -- which I thought that they only did at home or in their facilities but here in Florida anyway they go into hospitals and nursing homes and not only lift part of the burden from the staff but help the patient and their families and friends.

If you are a US Veteran, I hope you are signed into the Support one can get from that? I get medications and blood lab work and do have a specialized section (used to be called Geriatrics but they renamed it) that is very good and does include a very helpful Social Services section that got bathroom grab rails installed for me, including the installation costs. And I get free hearing aids and could get "free glasses" but they turn out not to be that free unless you need very ordinary ones!

And I do get a monthly compensation payment for service connected disabilities which is both tax free and is building up some savings for me.

Enough of my rambling. One point I don't think anyone specifically touched on (my apologies if they did) is your complaint that Norton was only red flagging something after you got there and you wanted to know before you "left home". I know I can get this say if I logged into Facebook or was reading some other licit website and then clicked on a link that I had no way of know was malicious. In many cases just hovering my mouse pointer over the link without clicking it will put up a warning which does enable you to avoid the danger.

But I expect you know all this!

All the best to you -- one never loses the sense of loss but it does change over time and I hope that is happening for you.

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

Dear Hugh,

Thank you ever so much for your kind words and advice. I was sorry to hear what befell your family, my hope, in the end is that your wife received a "gentle death." My Wife opted for home hospice (as her German Mother had died decades earlier, due to Cancer, while hospitalized, and rang up a huge hospital bill which ate up much of her net worth...ergo very small inheritance for my wife at age 18).

My German wife took good care of me, both while we lived in Germany as well as here in America, as I sometimes tend to be scatter-brained ("Where did I leave my car keys?"). She arranged for us to have an excellent (German) dentist as well a doctor who made house calls and also took good care of me when I was hospitalized in a German hospital with a serious kidney issue (a surgical team was able to save the kidney thus sparring me dialysis treatments for the rest of my life). She was also a domestic goddess (with a green thumb).

It was painful to me, down to my very soul, to watch her wither away over time (she deserved so much better). In the end I did the best that I could, yet, in hindsight, she always took better care of me.

Thank you for the suggestions on "how to beat the high cost of living!"

I have been using google search engine for years, and I like the fact that bundled with Norton, that I get a green dot with a white checkmark (Safe) next to a google hyperlink before I click on it. In this instance I got the green light and then later
"Malicious Website" warning (the delayed warning had me concerned...specifically that my laptop might no longer be secure) also the malicious websites never left anything behind in the past (in this case malicious advertising) There is a first time for everything. ;o(

Norton Security Deluxe and MBAM Premium usually are rather good at protecting me when I am online (just not on that day). I am very glad, and appreciate, regarding all the helpful advice that I have received on these forums.

"HAPPY THANKSGIVING" and "Good tidings to you, Hugh!" ;o)

SA,

So, my impulsive purchase of an Acer Chromebook 315, Walmart online Black Friday sale, might turn out to be the equivalent of an "own goal."

The Walmart associates, in-store at our local Walmart Superstore, were no help when I asked them about the Acer Chromebook 315 ("Dunno").

I have browsed several websites trying to find out what I need to do in order for the Chromebook to be as cyber secure as possible (BestBuy GeekSquad DID NOT do a fantastic job setting up my HP laptop), yet some of the information is contradictory...

1.) The general consensus seems to be that Chromebooks are more vulnerable to malware.

(You were so kind as to provide me with a link regarding MBAM - I have MBAM premium, hence I hope ALL I have to do is plug in the key code)

2.) Contradictory as to whether-or-not AV software is necessary (some say YES), and as Norton is not compatible with Chrome OS, "Fudge!"

What do you think? Or someone else who actually has a Chromebook/Chrome OS.

Its the eve of Thanksgiving enjoy the day to your heart's content! 'o)

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

David. My grandchildren, all five of them have at least one Chromebook being used for school, etc. They love them because they're easy to use. From a security stand point. The Chrome OS is a highly secure, tailored OS derived from the Linux kernel. Most of the malware infections Chrome OS gets are due to the extensions. Below are a few facts for you regarding Chrome OS:

  • Chromebooks grow more and more popular each year. In fact, they now make up around 11 percent of the total PC market.11
  • Part of that success is due to Chromebook’s successful marketing campaigns aimed at students and educators. In total, 30 million students and educators worldwide use
  • The Chrome OS is closely modeled on the open-source Linux OS.
  • Chromebooks are entirely immune to viruses.
  • However, Chromebooks are definitely susceptible to malware.
  • Chromebooks have access to more apps than any other device.
  • Chrome OS is not just a browser; it’s a fully functioning operating system. Of course, you can still browse the web with the Chrome browser within the Chrome operating system.
  • If you use the Chrome OS, everything— your computer, apps, security, and browsing— would all be tied to your Google account.

I would install MBAM on the Chromebook and allow it to be the guiding light for malware prevention. Just make sure that the apps/extensions you add are legit. You should be ok with it from that standpoint.

SA,

A question...

"Most of the malware infections Chrome OS gets are due to the extensions. Just make sure that the apps/extensions you add are legit."

In general, CAN Norton, or MBAM Premium, uncover/discover/detect/"smoke out" illegitimate extensions or their malware?

I keep running MBAM Premium on a daily basis (0 infections), then Norton Smart Scan (0 infections), thereafter Quick Scan (0 infections), and finally Full Scan (0 infections)...last, but not least, Norton Power Eraser, and yet my HP laptop continues to behave strangely! ;o(

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

SA,

I am NOT sure what the protocol, on these boards, is for asking questions (does one have to start a new thread? Or can someone tack on a different question in the same thread?), yet I have another question...

My set up is a HP laptop that is connected to a router via cable (the cable plugs-in on the left side of my laptop) while the router is connected (via cable) to a modem.

My HP laptop is normally connected to a router (via cable/port) because the router contains a firewall - the router, in turn, is hooked up to the modem. Thus increasing cyber security.

Sadly I have a bad back, hence I unplugged the router cable connected to my HP laptop...and took my laptop to the bedroom Wi-Fi (surfed the web while lying on my bed). This took place on the day of the incident (Malicious website/late Norton warning) when THEY got me, hence lousy timing. Worse yet...while in Owner/Administrator mode (BestBuy/GeekSquad NEVER set up a Standard Account)! ;o(

AS said, I ran ALL the Norton scans (0 infections) and MBAM Premium (0 infections) plus Norton Power Eraser. So, thereafter I, once again reconnected the cable leading from the backend of the router into the left side of my HP laptop

1.) If my HP laptop were to contain something BAD/infected...would that also mean that the router (when connected to the HP laptop via cable/port) could be infected (by proxy)?

The reason why I am asking is because normally the cable end, connecting the backside of the router to my laptop, blinks. See thru plastic piece that plugs into the left port of the HP laptop (and at night time, in the dark, I could see it blinking white lights...same as at the other end of the cable that plugs into the backside of the router which also blinks white lights). Yet, since said malicious website, my laptop does not blink at night time in the dark (where the router cable plugs into my HP laptop) while the other end of the cable, plugged into the backside of the router, continuous to blink white lights.

2.) Is there any way to check if the router is infected?

THANK YOU for your patience with me! ;o)

SO SORRY to bug you with questions!

Well, I have surfed the web to get more answers regarding Chromebooks, and specially Acer Chromebook 315, really amazing HOW Much contradictory information is out there:

1.) You can't apply a wireless mouse (touchpad ONLY) ...turns out NOT to be true (you can add a wireless mouse)!

2.) Recommendations for additional Anti-Malware/Anti-Virus software.

(As you had suggested) MBAM for Chromebook, yet ALSO Anti-Virus (to fill in the gaps)

VPN is also strongly recommended (NOT sure myself as to whether-or-not VPN service is FREE for an Acer Chromebook).

I hope these questions don't bore you to tears (they are a reflection of how naive I am when it comes to IT).

THANK YOU

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

Allow me to backtrack a bit and answer things in order regarding all your latest posts:

1.) If my HP laptop were to contain something BAD/infected...would that also mean that the router (when connected to the HP laptop via cable/port) could be infected (by proxy)?

"The reason why I am asking is because normally the cable end, connecting the backside of the router to my laptop, blinks. 2.) Is there any way to check if the router is infected? Your router COULD be compromised, please see #1 and #2 below.

Your quote within #1 and #2 are co-related, it begs the questions below. *Note: Have a family member or friend assist you with the below suggestions.

My #1 - Have you ever changed the "default factory" login and password to change settings within your router? IF, you are using what your ISP gave you or what is on the decal on the router IMMEDIATELY, change that. Also change the WiFi SSID AND passwords to log onto your WiFi.

My #2 - Additionally while you are inside your router settings, in settings you should be able to manually have the router check for updated firmware. I would perform that as well.

My #3 - MBAM should be all you need to keep your Chromebook protected.

My #4 - VPN suggestions for your Chromebook: https://www.techradar.com/vpn/google-chromebook-vpn

My #5 - As long as your Chromebook has at least 1 USB port you may use a wireless mouse with it.

My # 6 - When getting extensions for Chrome or Chromebook, Google Play should weed out whether or not they are legit. Conversely, that isn't always the case as some malicious app do make it past Google's vetting processes. IF, MBAM is running resident, meaning starts with the OS it will do that for you.

And finally regarding your laptop acting weird. IF, after performing steps 1 and 2 things do not change for the better, you should restore your laptop to an earlier date, aka before the weirdness began. Here is a tutorial for doing that:

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

SA,

For starters, ever SO SORRY for SO MANY posts on this thread...

Lately my life has become a juggling act...

One Doctor's appointment after another, some of them out-of-town, and lots of pain killers for my chronic back pain (and then there are the chronic migraine headaches). It all makes me somewhat sluggish...and I'm noticing new things amiss with my HP laptop. Also webpages (google browser) are loading VERY slowly (in some instances web pages wont load at all).

So, once again, thank you for answering the questions on the list:

1.) Honestly, NO IDEA regarding router (No, I have not changed the "default factory" login and password to change settings within my router...because to me, as a layperson, its just a piece of hardware...TRULY NO IDEA how to go about doing so).

Yes, I do have WiFi SSID and password, which I only used once (network setup), and once again, DO NOT KNOW how to change the two (luddite).

My relative knows even less about technology (I had to explain what a burner phone is).

2.) Mr. Luddite, alas, DOES NOT KNOW how to get to router settings (there is NO instructions manual that came with the router).

I'm going to get to the other questions later. Question 1.) and 2.) are more important and I don't know how to go about it, SORRY!

Sometimes I just feel overwhelmed by IT issues which you, as an expert, might feel are trivial.

THANK YOU for responding...if you think you can talk me through 1.) and 2.) I shall do my very best to follow your instructions (I have spent the day watching a dozen YouTube tutorials regarding Chromebooks).

Ok!! First thing is you should reset your HP laptop immediately. Please click the area where its stated " Restore from a system restore point " AND make sure that the date of that restore point you select is BEFORE the issues appeared.

Click one of the recovery options below and follow the steps to try to get things working again.

Remove an installed Windows update

Reset your PC

Use the Startup Repair function

Use installation media to reinstall Windows 10

Use installation media to restore your PC

Use a recovery drive to restore or recover your PC

Go back to your previous version of Windows

Restore from a system restore point

Use this Microsoft guide to reset - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/recovery-options-in-windows-...

Please tell us who your internet provider is and what router ( manufacturer and model ) they supplied to you. I can do some reference work and then try helping you to reset it and make the changes you need.

I Shall proceed with resetting the HP laptop...as to the router I'm going to contact my ISP and ask them to send an IT technician to swap out the router for a new one (plus new SSID and password) ASAP. I once, a few months ago, encrypted the password (beats me how I did it...I just did). I don't wish to over work you & your precious spare time.

I shall let you know how the reset worked out.

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

SA,

Still busy reading the reset laptop info...

Naive questions...

1.) The Acer Chromebook 315, still in box (since Walmart shipped it to me) should be okay, malware threat wise, since I have not set it up/charged it? (If the HP laptop & router should be infected)

2.) My new ISP, approximately May/June 2021, sold me on the idea to lease a router from them as it contains an additional firewall, hence I said yes.

The IT technician they sent out provided a modem (plugs into surcharge protector), a router cable (white) plugs into the modem while a blue cable connects the router to my HP laptop, and a black cable plugs into surcharge protector.

My question is could the modem also be compromised?

Was it necessary to physically connect the router to my HP laptop via cable (as the laptop does WiFi)?

If the router hand NOT been connected, via cable, to my HP laptop would things have been better for me?

I have a Brother printer (WiFi), which I have not used, since the incident, is it too at risk?

I shall stay in touch.

SA,

So, yes setting up a restore point, prior to malicious website/malware incident, is a great idea.

My HP laptop freezes up, online, lately and multi-media within websites wont work, "due to an extension."

The HP laptop is suddenly VERY slow and I'm getting low memory warnings.

I often times have to restart the laptop to get it going.

So far I only sign-in to my HP laptop (password protected) and into Norton to make these posts (bare minimum).

Automatic Restore Point vs. manually setting a date going back further in time?

Sorry, to bother you with this (I did this years ago on a Dell desktop successfully)

It should be an OLDER restore point. Make sure to check the box named "Show more restore points" for older points to show.

NOT to go completely OFF Topic, still focused on HP laptop reset, yet since Browsers can be infected (I have slimmed down Google bookmarks/extensions). I am NOT sure if Norton and MBAM Premium ALSO scan browsers?

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

David, open the link below and ensure its for Windows 11. The article is the same one which I posted in an earlier post and is for Windows 8.1 / 10 and 11. Just select the correct "tab" and follow the guidelines in that. To reset Windows 11 scroll down to "Reset your PC".

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/recovery-options-in-windows-...

Important:

  • If you’ve encrypted your device, you’ll need your BitLocker key to reset your PC. If you don’t know your BitLocker key, see Find my BitLocker recovery key.

  • During the resetting process, it is possible that your screen may go black for a long period of time (occasionally upwards of 15 minutes) and that your device may attempt to restart itself during this period. Manually attempting to restart the device yourself during this process could cause the reset to fail. Please be patient!

Resetting reinstalls Windows 11, but lets you choose whether to keep your files or remove them, and then reinstalls Windows. You can reset your PC from Settings, the sign-in screen, or by using a recovery drive or installation media.

Reset your PC from Settings

  1. Select Start  > Settings  > System  > Recovery .
    Open Recovery settings

  2. Next to Reset this PC , select Reset PC. Then choose from the options and/or settings in the table below.

Option

What it does

Keep my files > Change settings > Preinstalled apps On

  • Reinstalls Windows 11 and keeps your personal files.

  • Removes apps you installed.

  • Removes changes you made to settings.

  • Restores any apps your PC manufacturer installed.

Keep my files > Change settings > Preinstalled apps Off

  • Reinstalls Windows 11 and keeps your personal files.

  • Removes apps you installed.

  • Removes changes you made to settings.

  • Removes any apps your PC manufacturer installed.

Remove everything

  • Reinstalls Windows 11 and removes your personal files.

  • Removes apps you installed.

  • Removes changes you made to settings.

  • Removes any apps your PC manufacturer installed.

*Please note that cannot take any responsibility for any loss of data while performing these suggestions. You will be doing so at your own accord and risk.

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

SA,

Not to worry regarding certain risks...perfectly acceptable to me...THANK YOU for your continued HELP & Advice! ;o)

So, I DID DO the reset this morning choose the keep files option...

Got Internet connection back up and running.

I was able to re-install Norton 360 (alas Edge ONLY)...next to Browser it says, "Microsoft Edge (Default)...and the down arrow no long offers me the choice to choose Chrome because the reset removed anything google on my HP laptop (perfectly acceptable...just need google to sign-in to my e-mail)

I am, VERY MUCH, a Google kind of Guy, hence maybe you could HELP ME get the chrome back into Norton desktop/interface, please! :o)

(for that matter the REAL Google Chrome Browser/desktop icon)

I AM NOT an Edge/Bing fan (don't mistake me with the two old men sitting in the box, Muppets, while making snarky comments).

I am going to tinker with the HP laptop and look if some of the annoying problems are gone post restart (also shall re-install MBAM) and then get back to you.

THANK YOU, once again, for ALL of your helpful advice as well as your patience with me! ;o)

I am glad to report that, post reset, I WAS able to set up a Standard User Account (default account from now on when surfing the web), THANK YOU! ;o)

Under Owner/Administrator...

I have updated Windows (UpToDate)

I was surprised to note that on Windows Update - Pause Updates (Pause for 1 Week)...seems somewhat foolish to me NOT to be able to turn OFF "Pause Update," oh well!

As far as surfing the web goes, websites loading slowly/freezing, I'll test surf the web once I have Google Chrome Browser (and Chrome in Norton 360) and re-install MBAM Premium.

Right now, I am a "happy camper!"

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

One thing, DO NOT set MBAM to load when Windows starts.. That will cause false indications and conflicts. If you currently have is set to load with Windows change that setting and reboot the machine.

As for Chrome as a browser my recommendation is DON'T use it. It appears to be the crux of the issues you had, and, there was yet another zero-day vulnerability patched making a total of 8 this year alone. Use Edge instead.

Regarding MBAM & Windows...

If I understand you correctly...

MBAM - Settings - Security - Windows Startup "Launch MBAM in the background When Windows starts up" (OFF) & Restart Laptop?

So, that having been said...

Monday I will contact the Nurse who schedules my doctors appointments, and when I have the dates, I'll contact my ISP and make an appointment for them to send an IT technician out to swap out the routers (new SSID plus password) ASAP. That way I will be home for sure, and let him/her inside, and can tell the ISP technician what the problem is.

Questions:

1.) I have NO intention of hooking up the (blue) cable from the old/current router to my HP laptop, yet if the old/current router is infected could it re-infect my HP laptop via WiFi (minus the physical connection...cable/port)?

2.) Is it REALY necessary for the router and laptop to be connected via cable (in order to make the most use of the firewall inside the router)?

3.) In future, once I have unboxed the Acer Chromebook 315, and have it up and running, could the HP laptop (if re-infected) in-turn pass the infection (malware) onto the Chromebook if they share the same router/network?

As for Chrome as a browser...

Far be it from me to disagree with a KIND IT expert, yet Chrome/Google is my life!

Not meant to be a slap in the face (disrespect)...

"It appears to be the crux of the issues you had"

Because I have had problems with Edge before/switched to Chrome as browser (and things worked fine thereafter).

I have been surfing the Web/researching more these last few weeks because I will be moving in February 2023. I currently rent a (1970s) ranch style house from my niece, yet she intends to put the house on the market in January 2023 (she gave me ample forewarning).

I have been considering moving into an apartment or buying a (movable) 33 ft. trailer (the pro and con).

In either case moving can be stressful!

This is WHY I have been spending SO much time online researching options as to where to live, alas, I may have neglected to pay attention if SafeSearch is disengaged during said online research (standard is for it to be ON at all times).

I also never paid much attention to Browser extensions, yet I shall be sure to be more careful in future.

So, this is also the case of human error (a mistake I wont repeat).

I would appreciate it if you could walk we through re-installing REAL (legitimate) Google Chrome Browser & Plugging-in Chrome into Norton 360 (so that I can get my green dot plus white checkmark next to Google hyperlink). And then I'm on my way...

(Do you know of a safe website where I can download THE legitimate CrapCleaner?)

THANK YOU for ALL the kindness which you have shown me, heart warming!

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

Regarding MBAM - Yes!! Disable that setting and close MBAM. RESTART for the change to take effect system wide.

You can download Chrome from the official Google site here: https://www.google.com/chrome/

*Follow the on screen prompts - Then get the Chrome extensions you need for Norton in the Chrome extensions store here:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/Norton

When/if you have your ISP replace your modem/router make sure they can assist you with logging into the router and changing the default factory login and password. Ask them to also help you change the WiFi network names and password from their factory settings as well. Please ensure you write down this info and safe guard it so no one has access to it in the future. Doing these things will ensure that your router cannot be easily accessed by outside entities and become compromised. When you connect your Chromebook to the Wifi it will also be protected likewise. Since both devices are WiFi capable use WiFi. Norton will scan your networks and alert you in the event another intrusion is attempted and should block it. Conversely all actions blocked by Norton are always reviewable in Norton history for reference.

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

SA,

Once again THANK YOU for responding! ;o)

I DID as instructed regarding MBAM.

Before I tackle Google Chrome Browser/Norton...

I got, for the first time, a software update (that is blocking further updates) in My Norton Interface

Norton 360  My Norton - Software Updater

Program                         Current Version                       Latest Version             Risk                 State

(box) Microsoft OneDrive     21.220.1024.0005    22.225.1026.0001               Low         !Need to close program

If I place a checkmark in box (I get Exclude Update options bottom right screen)

Exclude         Update (does NOT unjam)

I have never used Microsoft OneDrive (merely clicked on Software Updater as the reset removed Java 8)

So, go with Exclude? ("Duh, you SO dumb!")?

Wishing you a pleasant Sunday, whats left of it, and a great upcoming week! :o)

Tell it to exclude that process as One Drive does update frequently.

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

Most internet providers will give a customer what is called a "combo" device. Its a modem ( delivers service into the home ) and will have built-in WiFi capability as well. Replace it. If you have a personal router that is providing your WiFi and a modem only from your provider, just factory reset it and change your SSID ( network names ) and login passwords on it as well. This will be starting clean and not having to worry about whether someone has figured out the factory defaults which would give them physical access. FWIW, most manufacturers are stupid enough to list default modem logins for their devices on the internet. I've seen them there more than once. Stay smart and stay ahead of them.

SA,

"most manufacturers are stupid enough to list default modem logins for their devices on the internet. I've seen them there more than once."  ("My Mama says, Stupid is as Stupid does!")

"Most internet providers will give a customer what is called a "combo" device. Its a modem (delivers service into the home) and will have built-in WiFi capability as well."

I don't have my own router, or modem, I rather care to lease (low monthly fee).

I have 2 separate units...one being the Modem and the other the Router, and my concern is malware that might have targeted the router/simply ended up inside said router (by virtue of having been connected to my compromised HP laptop), OF COURSE sign-in security/privacy is important (that I understand), yet whether-or-not the router (or modem) are malware free is beyond my knowledge.

I shall ask my ISP to replace both the Modem and the Router (and hope that they do so) and replace them with a newer/clean modem and router.

"starting clean"

Which would alleviate my concern when signing-in online to my e-mail, my bank, Social Security, etc.

I shall also be sure to ask the ISP IT technician how to change the network name/ password.

"which would give them physical access"

Yup, that is my concern!

THANK YOU again for responding, and so quickly, as your spare time is precious! :o)

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

FWIW!!  Yes indeed, have BOTH replaced and let them know they are suspected to be compromised and what that is suspect. They should show you how to do the changes and walk away so as NOT to view those when you are doing them. That's their professional duty. I wouldn't worry so much about them knowing but you can also be pro-active about preventing it while they are assisting.

Also have them ENSURE the modem/router are on the latest firmware. Its in the modem settings.

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

Hi David

On having the ISO techie do what SA has been outlining, when I went through this with Spectrum, my ISP inherited from RoadRunner days and who provide TV and House Phone (VOIP), the techie himself had a problem since what he took from the Cable modem didn't work nor did what he tried from the router ..... and in the end he said "Oh I have to get the SSID (if that's the right thing) from the back of "our Box" which meant the thing in the cabinet under my TV set!

I'm not saying your setup will be like this but I'd strongly recommend that you let the techie do the procedure with you alongside and if it is then working you can redo it if you feel you need to to get better protection but frankly I did not worry about the techie knowing, if that is what SA was concerned about.

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

SA,

THANK YOU for the clarification (that both Modem and Router need to be replaced)!

I have NOT dealt with my ISP, post initial installation, yet I hope they will be cooperative and understanding.

I Shall be SURE to ask questions (following your advice).

Latest Firmware, got it!

Question:

While the HP laptop is OFF, and as it is password protected, it is NOT vulnerable (via compromised Modem/Router/SSID/Password/Network)?

Also...

One thing I'll have to do, once my ISP has done its job, is to change the password to log-into Norton (in other words HERE). How do I best go about doing that?

Once again, THANK YOU, for you good Advice, and Help, and Patience with me! ;o)

SA,

As this thread started out about Chromebooks...

I took a long look at the Chromebook VPN providers (hyperlink which you had so kindly provided me with).

Although I have watched 2 dozen YouTube videos regarding chromebooks, in general, none of the videos I watched covered VPN.

The techradar article, bottom of page, suggested there are 2 ways of going about it  "Android app or a Chrome extension" (if I read the article correctly) the author is IN FAVOR of the Android APP version (versus Chrome extension). What do you think is the better way to go?

Re: PLZ HELP! Chrome OS compatible with Norton Security Deluxe?

Get the app vice the extension. You have more direct control of the VPN in that manner vice loading it in a browser after the fact.

I have learned a lot regarding IT here on Norton Community Forums, which was TRULY helpful, and from you SA in particular!

I am also grateful (on different threads) to bjm, peterweb and Hugh (huwyngr)!

Well, I am also fortunate as you have shown a great deal of patience with me.

IT is not my forte...more of a Mr. TV Guy, hence good people such as yourself are VERY important!

IF you can...please keep up the good work (Hugh is 97 yrs old). LOL

When I first purchased Norton NIS, sometime ago, I did so because of the 2 layer Firewall (also User friendly/Idiot Proof).

Microsoft, Super Mega Rich Multi-National Corporation, with their stingy 1 layer firewall (Windows Defender) DID NOT impress me (unlike Norton).

Norton AV also struck me as being better then McAfee or Webroot SpySweeper. Yet, to my surprise, the most pleasant part of Norton are these forums! :o)

I have my SOLUTION, hence I shall end this thread.

Thank You, once again, from a retired Army Guy to a retired Navy Guy!
