Online (LIVE) Tracking? Evil?

So, here I am minding my own business...When a NEW kind of Norton popup appeared...informing me that 3 separate entities (on 2 different websites) are tracking my movements online (and, for a fee, Norton has the solution to my problem)!

I have, by and large, ignored the Norton (for some extra money) popups (in particular data broker profiles), yet recently some malware landed on my HP laptop (and spread out), hence I pay closer attention to cybersecurity.

I have not been using VPN, that comes included with Norton 360, for that long (I don't expect a VPN to be ALMIGHTY).

Is this Norton HELP feature with Online Trackers a absolute necessity (as, for instance, VPN)?

Is this the NEW normal...people chasing other people online? Can one quantify as to just how common this really is?

Following a rather lousy weekend ("If it can go wrong it will!" Murphy's Law).

I thank you in advance for having read my humble post plus, of course, ALL well-meaning advice and info!

Re: Online (LIVE) Tracking? Evil?

Hello David. Here is some good information about who and why we are tracked online. Its all about the almighty dollar and selling data to present ads, and of course, the revenue it generates. Other reason are nefarious in nature. Malicious actors deliver malware in the same manner.

SA,

THANK YOU for responding and also THANK YOU for the link! :o)

Yes, the "Almighty Dollar" (and "American Cutthroat Capitalism") and what people are willing to do to have it!

Enough never seems like enough for some people (at the expense of others)! :o(

Re: Online (LIVE) Tracking? Evil?

SA,

I read the article on Internet Tracking with great interest, THANK YOU! :o)

My personal concern is not so much Google, but rather individual (BAD) people (such as the creator of the malware that ended up on my laptop...whether-or-not said person(S) will leave me alone in the future). I believe that was what the Norton pop-up (for a fee) we will protect you from (insert individuals who were tracking me online at that moment...3 of them).

In ALL the YouTube videos regarding Chromebooks...there was only one critic (He had issue with Google's Privacy promises).

The Article makes a number of suggestions, yet weak (at times) on the "How to?"

For instance, I think it is great that:

Suggest Private Search Engine (suggest StartPage or DuckDuckGo) Do you have any experience with either of them?

Suggest Tracker Bloker (PrivacyBadger or Ghostery) Do you, by chance, have any experience with either of the two of them?

The Article does NOT appear rich in details when it comes to:

Recommending a (Good) Ad Bloker for Google Chrome

I have, as yet, still more follow up reading to do regarding:

Browse in incognito mode

Opt out of data broker sites

I have experienced malwaretising (Pop-up - Fake McAfee update for MY NON-Existing McAfee AV)

Normally MBAM blokes sites that contain such content.

THANK YOU, once again, for providing with said hyperlink (lots of "food for thought")! ;o)

Re: Online (LIVE) Tracking? Evil?

David. I do not use Chrome, however UBlock Origin I do use on Opera GX on all my machines. I also use Norton Safe Search Enhanced. I've always had Google as my search engine coupled with these two extensions. The latter is the best I have used to date I don't have any experience with either of the two apps/extensions you posted about.

Re: Online (LIVE) Tracking? Evil?

SA,

I am a "sluggish," due to pain killers, hence I forgot that you had suggested going with Microsoft Edge (rather than Google Chrome).

Thank You for the above info! ;o)
