False positives.

Repeated False Positives on several programs.

Scan the program(s) with VirusTotal - CLEAN!

Scan the program(s) manually with Norton - CLEAN!

WHY????

I beta test software (I've been coding since the early 1960's) and some of the betas aren't digitally signed. I click "Allow always" - it's IGNORED!

WHY????

If Norton repeatedly gives false positives, how can I trust it to reliably detect a virus - I've disabled Auto-protect because it clearly is not working.

If you disable auto protect you might as well just uninstall Norton and run another product of your choice.

WHAT is being detected as a false positive? Files you are creating or..? Are you excluding them from scans with the settings shown below?

If you are beta testing software you cannot rely on anything working 100% correctly. Including being detected by AV products.

As a developer, or in your case a beta tester, you need to create a master folder for all your projects. Then exclude that folder and all sub folders from Both items in the image below.

Thank you for your replies, you've done a grand job and convinced me that my decision to junk Norton is the correct one.

Well dumping Norton certainly wasn't the idea being relayed, but we all must make our own choices nevertheless. Isolating "developer" files will be what the end results of any A/V worth its salt should be doing. A/V is after all designed to protect the operating system and information therein from malicious actions. I believe, that if you do apply the suggestion presented you will have a workable solution. Others have also followed it with great results.

How do criminals smuggle cannabis? Put it in a box and label it "bananas". How do hackers get viruses into a system? Disguise them as a "known good" program. You're telling me to put beta's in a directory and label them as "safe". Telling me to assume the betas are clean. [assume - make an ASS out of U and ME. I don't care if you make an ass out of you, but don't make an ass out of me.]
I had no problem with BullGuard flagging each NEW beta (without a digital signature) as suspect, my complaint about Norton is that clicking "Allow always" DOES NOT WORK - it pops up the same alert next time with the SAME beta.
It got even crazier! I ran a beta, alert, click allow always. Checked, from the beta, for updates to the program. New beta. Downloaded, ran it. NO ALERT!!! It's a different beta but Norton regarded it as safe. Ran it again, several minutes later, and now get an alert.

Second point (in my original post). Auto-Protect flags, and quarantines, a program. Fine. I restore the program and scan manually with Norton. Clean. One of them must be wrong. I have NOT excluded the program. I am NOT on line, so Norton can't have used a newer criteria for checking with the manual scan. How can I trust Norton if it can't decide if a program is good or bad?

That's my main reason for dumping Norton - I don't trust it because it gives different results at different times. Your suggestion to declare betas safe only reinforces that miss-trust. You're basically telling me "don't believe Norton, declare the beta safe yourself, so Norton will ignore it".

The only reason I tried Norton was that I have over a years subscription owing on BullGuard. Norton claimed it would refund me that. NOTHING. I read other people have had the same experience. More false information from Norton.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS - I DON'T TRUST NORTON.
