Utilities Premium handling of registry errors

Norton utilities premium says it corrects registry errors.  In Automatic Care it even says "clean out and repair registry problems" under automatic PC maintenance, but nowhere can I find any evidence that it's actually doing checking or repairing of the registry.

How can I check that it's working/worked please?

Re: Utilities Premium handling of registry errors

Hello. Check within your "Dashboard" there should be a "History" tab located there.

Re: Utilities Premium handling of registry errors

The only items in the history file for the last two years are windows or internet junk files removed.  What I would like to see is a clear statement such as 'registry repair run - no errors found' or similar.   No message or indication of any kind could mean that the function isn't working.  Other functions report working 100%, or no junk files found, but registry checks never get a mention.

thanks

Re: Utilities Premium handling of registry errors

Did you look at the user manual I posted the link to? Your "Toolbox" should have the ability to run tools separately as shown in the article. If other tools show a dialog there when completed I would think NUP should as well when checking the registry. I personally do not use NU because many of the tools within it are totally redundant for Windows 10. This may be a good suggestion for the product team in the "Product Suggestions" board.

Tools:
All-in-One PC Cleanup
■ All-in-one tool to clean out junk files, registry issues, private data and more. Clicking on
All-in-One PC Cleanup runs all of the below tools, which can also be run separately by
clicking on each

Re: Utilities Premium handling of registry errors

Thanks for your help, I can see why you don't use NU and I won't be getting it for my other PC's.  Whilst it talks about "Clean out and repair registry problems" the only ones that it actually does anything about is broken shortcuts, so I was looking for something it doesn't do.

The dialogue only shows up when Windows cleanup is run individually and whilst it is running, blink and you'll miss it, and nothing gets put into history to show that it ran.  It doesn't show when run as part of All-in-one PC cleanup though the dialogue for Internet cleanup does, which is misleading.

Looks like I'll need a separate registry cleanup tool like iolo system mechanic or similar for my older PC's.

thanks

Re: Utilities Premium handling of registry errors

If you are using Windows 10 or higher there isn't any good reason for registry tweaks and cleaners. They are nothing more than snake oil. Windows will do a great job of keeping your system running as it should on its own. Just my advice of many years.

Re: Utilities Premium handling of registry errors

Interesting - one of my more infrequently used laptops (hence delay in responding) can take more than 5 minutes to boot-up.  Norton scan reports 11 broken links that can cause slow or failure to boot and try's to sell utilities premium to fix the problem.  Is this over hyping the issue, or is there a genuine case to fix?

Re: Utilities Premium handling of registry errors

The laptop in question, could have hardware issues, outdated drivers, OS updates awaiting installation, causing the long boot times. What OS is on this laptop and what version/build? NU from my perspective is hype. Performing some routine maintenance manually will most times clear issues. Give that a go.

Here are some things you can perform via Windows to speed up your laptop:

Disable fast startup in power settings:

Open an elevated command (run as admin), type in sfc/ scannow. When done use the command chkdsk /f

You can also use DISM to check and repair the OS health:

Re: Utilities Premium handling of registry errors

thanks for the checks & fixes, a lot of good stuff there- for the record the laptop is using Windows 10.0.19045, updated monthly since installation.  All drivers regularly checked & updated as required through HP Assistant. HDD using 125gb out of 930gb.

However in the event log is an error 0xC00000D4 - failed fast start, which appears even more infrequently than PC boots.  A controlled shutdown and start from cold boots up in less than 2 mins and doesn't show any error - so it looks as if the problem could be attributed to something going awry in the shutdown occasionally.  If it starts happening regularly then I'll start on the suggested fixes, meantime what's not broken doesn't need fixing!

Re: Utilities Premium handling of registry errors

Thanks for the post back. The general solution for the error code you are getting it to simply disable fast startup in power settings and restart the system to have it take effect. Suggest reviewing the Microsoft article on that subject.
