Driver shows updated. Rescan advises not installed, it is skipped.

As a result of smart scan reporting I had outdated drivers, I purchased and started using Norton Driver Updater. My subscription covers multiple PC's. I have Win11 Pro, Win10Pro & Win7 on separate bootable drives all housed in one desktop.

Whether I boot up the Win 11Pro or Win10Pro and run the scan the result is the same for the Bluetooth driver.

When I ran Norton Driver Updater, all drivers identified as outdated were updated with the exception of one. Although the program indicated the new driver was downloaded, unpacked and updated, when I rescanned it advises that the driver was skipped. I've used multiple methods of trying to locate and update driver in device manager but not sure I know where to look. When I try, Windows advises I'm running the latest driver. I believe I located the correct file (by date) in Windows/System32/DriveStore/FileRepository directory and tried to point to the file location. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver.

The Driver I'm trying to update is

Broadcom BCM20702 Bluetooth 4.0 USB Device

skipped version 12.0.1.1105

Current version 12.0.1.940

(1) Reading on the internet it advises that it may not install because of a group policy setting in Windows. (On one occasion I believe there was a message from Windows to that effect).

(2) When I look at Event Manager, message reads,

Warning "Device USB\VID_0A5C&PID_21E8\5CF370999597 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match".

Information "Device USB\VID_0A5C&PID_21E8\5CF370999597 requires further installation".

I'm not sure how to proceed.

Thank you

Steve

Hello Steve. DO NOT use Driver updater as it can cause your systems to become not usable. Its isn't mature nor ready for prime time use at this stage in its development. There are threads here on the forums that are discussing it.

I would first remove ALL drivers that are installed for "Broadcom BCM20702 Bluetooth 4.0 USB Device", reboot. If you would like to download and install on separate machines with different versions of Windows you can get them here at the MS catalog. They should all be compatible:

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=%27Broadcom%20BCM...

I WOULD also suggest possibly getting the correct drivers from each OEM website since this is older hardware. If the MS drivers give you issues.

Re: Driver shows updated. Rescan advises not installed, it is skipped.

Hello SA,

Thanks for the advice and links to the Broadcom drivers.

Lesson learned; I will have to tread more carefully in future. Make sure I have a backup & rescue disk handy when applying any windows updates, driver updates or installing new software.

Luckily, I did not experience the system crashes described by others.

How will the average User know when Driver Updater is a mature product?

Re: Driver shows updated. Rescan advises not installed, it is skipped.

You're welcome. No one will know 100% for sure IF/WHEN DU becomes a mature product that doesn't affect certain systems and borks others. Norton maintains it is, and I respectfully disagree. I personally don't and won't use it for testing or otherwise. All companies will say their products are ready for prime time when some aren't. My experience has always been, using utilities that claim to do what Windows already does a good job of doing, is asking for issues. Therefore I always recommend others not to use them as a precaution. Replacing a PC is expensive. Software is another added expense when recovery options and backup aren't a part of the users portfolio of thinking out of the box. Drivers can and do actually damage hardware BTW. Been there, done that, a time or two over the years with older Windows OS's.
