Norton constantly asking for full disk access

Over the last couple of days Norton 360 began constantly asking for full disk access for the Norton Extension.  I do not have the Norton Extension active on any of my browsers and do not want to have it active as it interferes with the native protections on the browsers that I use.  Using latest version on Sonoma.

How do I get this message to stop?

fwiw ~

Repeated Norton Full Disk Access prompt appears when you open Norton on macOS 13 or later
Applicable For: Mac
[...]

If you have upgraded your operating system to macOS 14 Sonoma, enable the Norton System Extension again.

Even after enabling the Norton System Extension on macOS 14 Sonomo, you may still see a repeated Full Disk Access prompt whenever you open Norton after a system restart. It is an operating system issue, and we are working on getting this issue fixed.

Depending on your operating system version, select one of the following:

macOS 14 Sonoma ›

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. In the Full Disk Access prompt, click Open Settings.

  3. In the Full Disk Access window, next to Norton System Extension, move the slider to Turn On.

  4. Type your Mac administrator account password or use Touch ID and then click Modify Settings.

  5. Navigate back to the Norton product window and click Complete.

Even if you don't have any extensions active on your browser, you still need to enable Norton extensions in Privacy and Security for full disk access

It's not Norton's browser extension but system extension for macOS. But however, recently, I have been asked two times to enable Norton system extension just after a day or two of enabling it. But I didn't get that notification today, fortunately.

Re: Norton constantly asking for full disk access

Today, I got the same notification and had to enable Norton System Extension again. Either it's a bug in Norton or macOS Sonoma. This is the third time, am doing it and it's getting annoying. Norton can you please look into it?

To Mike_R,

Please begin to tell us which browser and which of its native securities you want. On Edge and FireFox, I have my profiles on Strict, all the standard security on Maximum, and with all Norton's extensions active, I have no problem, on the last Intel MacBook Pro OS 14 Sonoma.

For full disk access multiple prompts, I just posted the solution for 14 Sonoma: It's just the same as for 13 Ventura: Suppress "Norton System Extension", quit Norton's last installation, and re-launch it.

-Except if you're using Tor, I do not see any reason that Norton would interfere.

I have had this several times and it's so frustrating - I followed the steps and it never worked.

It kept blocking my internet on the Mac - Luckily I had a windows virtual machine which was fine.

Norton were absolutely useless and kept blaming apple - as my subscription auto renewed I was too late to stop my subscription , as I would have stopped it

Norton ( when I did manage to get through  - NORTON - your customer Service is Absymal) they  wanted remote access to my Mac - which I refused

I did find, however - that if I went to Network - filters and proxy and removed the Norton 360 content filter - I regained access to the internet

But the only other way was to uninstall - re install , but I Knew it would come back

Norton - you have my money - now fix it please

@bjm_ Why is Norton not saying anything about this issue? Is it a bug in Norton or macOS? Why do they keep ignoring issues in their own official forum when they should be responding to comments.

While this issue still exists, I do have to face this issue after a few days again and again.

Re: Norton constantly asking for full disk access

All they did was offer me a refund (if I was eligible )- which is fine, but would prefer the issue resolved or at least " being investigated " but they appear un interested

and until they convince me otherwise, thats what I believe

I'm a reasonably intelligent and suspected that Norton prevented me from accessing the internet , only my persistance ( and maybe luck )  got me back online .

I know it's only matter of time before I see  " You are not connected to the internet " open up Norton and see the request to finish the set up..knowing that I done this when the software was installed ( every time ! )

Norton - please feel free to comment

I'm of the view that Norton will not be resolving this issue as it seems to have been ongoing since Ventura was launched more than a year ago. I think that going through the granting of full disc access every time one reboots is now part of the Norton experience.

Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Oct 3, 2023

There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:

  1. You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
  2. Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
  3. Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.

macOS already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.

Rather than asking which non-Apple "anti-virus" or "Internet security" product is best, a much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":

Finding it hard to lay the blame of this on a single vendor where multiple vendors are seeing the same issue. This issue appears to be a policy reset in the OS after several reboots that is the main cause.
