Idle Full System Scan Doesn't Resume

NIS 2011, Windows XP-SP3.  I have my idle timeout set to 10 minutes.

An idle full scan was underway today when I had to briefly open an MS-Word document to check something, so the scan stopped.  Then I left the computer and did not return for two hours.  When I returned, the log did show -- as expected -- that scan was canceled when I looked at the Word document.  However, the scan did not resume.

It seems like I've been having this issue for 3-4 weeks now.  Namely, when an idle full scan is interrupted it doesn't resume as it used to.  I've even waited 3-4 days for resumption, but it doesn't retry until it's time for the next weekly idle full scan.

Any thoughts or suggestions?  (For reasons I won't go into here, I prefer not to upgrade to 2012 right now.)  Thanks.

Re: Idle Full System Scan Doesn't Resume

Update - Have been using the computer intermittently since posting the question, and just now -- after about about 4 hours (+10 minutes idle) from the first auto-cancel -- the idle full scan started up again.  Is there possibly some minimum amount of time it waits before resuming?  Also, does it permanenty "give up" on a given idle scan after a certain number of tries, or after a certain length of tiime has passed with insufficient idle time?

But again, I've had NIS for 3 years and don't recall issues with the idle scans failing to eventually complete until recently...

Hi,

I can't confirm that there is a 'fixed' delay before a full scan will resume. Due to the fact that they do take some time it would seem reasonable that the program would wait until things got 'quiet' before resuming. As for it quitting - no way. It will complete its full scans every couple of weeks no matter how long it takes.

The Idle Full System Scan will try to complete during Idle Time and if it tries X number of times (for some reason 5 times sticks in my head) and is unsuccesful it will run until completion, and in some cases really loads down the system.  Some folks react to that situation as ther system being frozen and they force shut down, restart and the same thing occurs again. In such a situation it is best to let the Scan run until completion and then you will have another 7 days until it wants to run the Full System Scan again.   My Full System Scan takes about 1 hour and 45 to 50 minutes (when it runs straiight thru).

Re: Idle Full System Scan Doesn't Resume

dickevans - Yes, the scan has indeed completed this go-round, a few minutes ago.

yank - The situation you describe sounds familiar to me.  I'll bet I've encountered it at least once or twice without realizing what was going on.

Thanks to both of you for the replies.

Re: Idle Full System Scan Doesn't Resume

Ardmore,

Glad to read that you have a current full scan on file now

If all goes well you won't be bugged by this problem again for a few weeks When it does happen you know what to do.

Stay well and surf safe
