Differences in Norton VirusDefs update process

Continuing my observation from http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Problem-with-generation-update-delta-for-virscana-dat/m-p/815990 I can assume that indeed Norton has some problems with generating update delta for virus definitions using complete set of virus definitions (i.e. Smart definitions option is turned off).

Here is a picture of the standard virus definitions update content, in which you can see that delta for virscana.dat is normally generated when using smart definitions, but when using full definitions set, delta for virscana.data is not generated. Instead of copying only changed parts of the file, the file is fully copied into update package which means that update size will be significantly larger.

The full size of virscana.dat is 4 479 786 bytes long(around 4MB 375KB) while delta size is (as you can see in the picture) 139 bytes long. Which means that 3 438 226 bytes(3MB 358KB) of Live Update size is just only compressed virscana.dat

Your observations confirm the reason many users will want to use the Smart Definitions. Especially those on slow or dial up connections will want to use the Smart Definitions to reduce the size of the download.

You're right. That's why this update problem should be fixed. Because the only difference between core virus definitions set(smart definitions) and full virus definitions set - is the initial number of virus signatures included. The update size shouldn't be larger because old malware signatures aren't updating. In these updates Symantec includes updates to the fresh and evolving malware families, so update sizes must be equivalent.

Can someone, from Symantec Support Team, investigate this behavior of Norton product and Symantec LiveUpdate server?

I'm not 100% sure what you are asking for.

With Smart Definitions turned off, the updates will be larger. With Smart Definitions turned on, the updates should be smaller. I would say that is the way it is designed.

Hi Nerimash,

When you toggle between Smart Definitions and Full Definitions, the subsequent download will always be a complete new file.  After that, the updates should be incremental.

Exactly. The initial download sizes of those packages should differ because smart definitions contains less signatures but the future updates should be incremental.But it is not true. Updates to virscana.dat(component of virus signatures package) are not incremental if you are trying to use complete virus definitions set.

is it hard to bring answer on simple question: Why update server doesn't generate incremental update for virscana.dat if client uses full definitions set package?
