IP Address listed as uncategorized and blocked

Hello,

My kids are attempting to navigate to acceptable sites but are getting blocked.  The popup displays the domaine they are trying to access and they request access which then posts an email to me and an entry to the log.  Both the email I get and the log message provide just an IP address which, when followed, does not lead to a valid web page.  As a result I am not able to approve the site.

The log and email give me this URL.

http://216.249.99.38/nicaragua/government_type.html

Following this, I get:

Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)

Looking up the IP I find it maps to a number of domains as shown on  http://sameid.net/ip/216.249.99.38/

We were looking for http://www.indexmundi.com/nicaragua/government_type.html  which shows as a safe site on Norton Web Safe search.

Why is the correct domain being displayed for the kids and an invalid ip address being captured and displayed for me?

Re: IP Address listed as uncategorized and blocked

Hi GreyGryffin,

If an unknown ip address is detected by the program, then the URL will be categorized as Uncategorized and blocked if the Uncategorized is selected to be blocked at Settings -> Web.

How does your child try to access the website, by adding the URL

http://www.indexmundi.com/nicaragua/government_type.html to the browser URL field (then get blocked) or tries to access the page from a link located in other website?

Thanks,

Katie

Re: IP Address listed as uncategorized and blocked

Hi Katie - so happy it's you!    I've read many replies with your name on them and appreciate your dedication to finding the root cause.

Re: Website access: the typical acces path is to query a topic in Google and make a selection from the results.  This is when my kids get a blocked site popup.    The block is not correct as the domain of the target site is in the Norton Save Site and listed as a General Info site with no threats.

I've tried to reproduce this scenario with limited success.  I set myself up as a child with the same restrictions as my children.  I made the same query to Google: "nicaragua's population";   Most of the way down the first page are listings for indexmundi sites: Nicaragua Demographics.

The first time I clicked it, I got the popup block.  As I wanted to captue a screen shot, I clicked 'Oops - made a mistake, go back' and received the Bad Request (Invalid Hostname) error.   I closed the browser completely and restarted with the query.  Clicking the same link a second time took me directly to the site with only a warning about a 'Twitter' insert on the page - social networking is disabled.  But I had no trouble navigating in the site.

Obviousy this is an intermittent issue and will be challenging to track down.

The crux of this issue appears to be that, for some reason, although, initially, the correct domain is displayed for the kids in the blocking popup but an invalid ip address being captured and displayed for me.   It is this IP address that triggers the unauthorized category and subsequent block.

It appears to happen much more consistently for my son so I'll dig deeper to figure out what he may be doing differently and see if closing/restarting is a viable workaround for him.

Thanks for your help.

Re: IP Address listed as uncategorized and blocked

Hi GreyGryffin,

Thank you for your kind and supportive words.  I'm glad to know my work is helpful to  you in some way.

I tried my luck using the steps you described, and I only saw the facebook section was blocked,  but the website was not blocked.

I also want to clarify one thing.  You  mentioned "The block is not correct as the domain of the target site is in the Norton Safe Site and listed as a General Info site with no threats..."   A website is blocked or not  in Norton Family depends on the website is

1. On the block list or

2. The categories of the website are blocked or not.

That means even a website has no threats, like yahoo.com but if the website is on the block list, then when a monitored child tries to visit yahoo.com, the website will be blocked.

If you are able to reproduce this constantly, please let me know.  I think what happens now is instead of the domain name is captured by the program, the ip address of the website is captured.  Since it's an unknown ip address, the program blocks it as Uncategoried website.

Thanks,

Katie
